INTRODUCTION: In several high-income Western countries, parenthood has increasingly been deferred to a higher age. This epidemiological study aimed to assess the relationship between maternal and paternal age and the incidence of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without the presence of a cleft palate (CLP) and cleft palate only (CP) in the United States (US).
METHODS: We examined 22,669,736 births using a US-based cohort from 2016 to 2021. Dependent variables were non-syndromic CLP and CP. Independent variables included maternal age, race, education, and cigarette use. A separate set of modeli

Deletion of 15q11.2-q13 results in either Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) or Angelman syndrome (AS) depending on the parent of origin. Duplication of the PWS/AS critical region (PWASCR) has also been reported in association with developmental delay and autism, and it has been shown that they also show a parent-of-origin effect. It is generally accepted that maternal duplications are pathogenic. However, there is conflicting evidence as to the pathogenicity of paternal duplications. We have identified 35 patients with gain of the PWASCR using array comparative genomic hybridization. Methylation tes

We have longitudinally followed the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restrictions that govern the response of T lymphocytes to specific Ag in a child with severe combined immunodeficiency who was successfully transplanted by using T cell depleted haploidentical maternal bone marrow cells and immunized shortly afterwards with tetanus toxoid (TT) Ag. In the first year post-transplant, monocytes were of both donor and recipient origin whereas T and B cells were of donor origin. Three years after transplant, all monocytes and T and B cells were of donor origin. T lymphocytes taken from the c

Individuals within monogamous species form bonds that may buffer against the negative effects of stress on physiology and behavior. In some species, involuntary termination of the mother-offspring bond results in increased symptoms of negative affect in the mother, suggesting that the parent-offspring bond may be equally as important as the pair bond. To our knowledge, the extent to which affect in paternal rodents is altered by involuntary termination of the father-offspring bond is currently unknown. Here, we investigated to what extent separation and paternal experience alters passive stres

Several studies, performed according to hypotheses based on teratogenesis and carcinogenesis have tried to answer the question: Do parents of children with congenital anomalies have a higher cancer risk? If the general answer is no, however, a higher risk for cancer was reported in the parents of children with cleft lip/palate (Zhu et al. [2002: Br J Cancer 87:524-528]). In achondroplasia, the neo-mutations are from paternal origin raising the hypothesis of the existence of a "mutator" gene acting in male meiosis and in somatic, mitotic cells in both sexes which may favor also the occurrence o

Wilms tumors commonly exhibit loss of heterozygosity for polymorphic DNA markers located on the short arm of chromosome 11 at band p15. In some instances, the deleted region does not include 11p13, the location of the WT1 gene, suggesting the existence of a second Wilms tumor gene on 11p. Both the exclusive loss of the maternally derived allele in Wilms tumors and the recent description of constitutional paternal isodisomy for this region in patients with either the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) or isolated hemihypertrophy have suggested that this second locus is subject to sex-specific ge

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to determine whether parental age has any influence on child health.
METHODS: Well-baby check-up data at 1 month and at 12 months of age were used. The trends of parental age in association with growth measurements, incidence of physical and developmental abnormalities, occurrence of low birthweight, and maternal history of spontaneous abortion were analyzed.
RESULTS: Associations between increasing paternal age and incidence of psychomotor developmental delay at 12 months, increasing paternal and maternal age and increasing birthweight, and incre

Autonomy is a fundamental psychological need, yet parents often override it for children's own good--practicing paternalism. Do children see this as morally justified? In three preregistered studies, U.S. children aged 4-9 (N = 413; 51% female; 61% White) by default reacted more positively to caregivers' pro-autonomy decisions than to anti-autonomy decisions. However, when anti-autonomy decisions benefited them (Study 1), or another child acting out of ignorance (soft paternalism; Study 2) or deliberation (hard paternalism; Study 3), children judged such decisions to be fair and justified, des

Sixteen triploid and one tetraploid human abortuses were studied for the origin of polyploidy using a sequential Q- and R-banding technique. Ten triploid abortuses provided informative data: one originated in the maternal first meiotic division; five apparently resulted from dispermy; two derived from an error during either the paternal second meiotic division or the first mitotic division; and the last two were of paternal origin. The results indicate that paternal factors, especially dispermy, are the predominant sources of triploidy in man. The tetraploid abortus showed duplication of both

Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial defect of long-chain fatty acid β-oxidation, caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in HADHA or HADHB. We report a 22-year-old male with an atypically mild presentation of LCHADD who was referred to the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN). Trio genome sequencing identified a maternally inherited HADHA frameshift pathogenic variant and a paternally inherited noncoding rare HADHA variant. The paternal noncoding variant was predicted by in silico splicing analysis to create a cryptic splice dono

OBJECTIVES: We sought to estimate the risk for autism associated with maternal and paternal age across successive birth cohorts.
METHODS: We linked birth records and autism diagnostic records from the California Department of Developmental Services for children born in California between 1992 and 2000 to calculate the risk associated with maternal and paternal age for each birth cohort as well as for the pooled data.
RESULTS: The categorical risks associated with maternal age over 40 years ranged from a high of 1.84 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.37, 2.47) to a low of 1.27 (95% CI = 0.95,

Repeated spontaneous abortion (RSA), with very complicated pathogenesis, has an incidence of about 0.5% 2.0%. As for the paternal part which provides half of the genes for the embryo, current studies mainly focus on the genes of somatic cells or germ cells. Chromosome abnormality of somatic cells, chromosome disorder of sperm, defects in sperm quality, genetic mutation, senility, infection and any other paternal gene abnormalities that affect the embryo would induce RSA. This paper presents an update on the above mentioned paternal factors which might result in RSA.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anterior sacral meningocele (ASM) and presacral teratoma (PT) are related malformations. Both can have familial occurrence. Surgical treatment of occult cases is essential. Hence, it is important to screen the asymptomatic relatives. Plain radiograph of the sacrum to look for any bony abnormalities is the usual accepted screening modality. The authors report ASM and PT in siblings (with positive family history) with no sacrococcygeal bony abnormality on imaging. Both the siblings had presacral mass on imaging.
METHODS: The medical records of 2 siblings with ASM and PT were

Transactional developmental theories propose that poor parenting behaviors contribute to youth substance use, and youth substance use contributes to poor parenting behaviors. However, research aimed at testing these theories has not distinguished: (1) between- and within-person sources of variance; (2) maternal and paternal parenting behaviors; and (3) alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use. This study addressed these limitations by investigating the reciprocal associations between maternal and paternal warmth and hostility with alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use among just

Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we estimate associations of paternal incarceration with three measures of teens' attitudes and expectations: (1) optimism about the future, (2) perceived importance of college graduation, and (3) perceived likelihood of college graduation. Results suggest that whereas optimism toward the future and the importance of college are resilient in the face of paternal incarceration, teens' expectations of actual college completion are reduced, particularly for Black youth. An examination of micro-, meso-, and macro-level mechanisms sug

A case of familial hyperlipidemia incidentally found through a 16 year-old high school girl with type V hyperlipoproteinemia and abdominal bouts consistent with this type of hyperlipemia is reported for the first time in Japan. The laboratory findings of the plasma of her father revealed typical hyperlipoproteinemia of type IIa. Nineteen of her 26 kindred were investigated. Type V was seen only in the proband, type IIa in father, paternal grandmother, two paternal aunts, and two paternal cousins, type IV in three paternal cousins. The serum apolipoprotein (apo A-I, A-II, B, C-II, C-III, and E)

BACKGROUND: Early relationships with caregivers shape emotional and cognitive development, colouring attitudes and behaviours across the lifespan. Secure attachment has consistently been associated with a lower risk of late-life depression (LLD). However, the extent to which parental (maternal or paternal) attachment contributes to late-life depressive symptoms and whether this association is influenced by cognitive impairment remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether mild cognitive impairment (MCI) moderates the association between parental (maternal/paternal) attachment style (se

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PB) or its threat (TPB) can negatively affect paternal mental health, leading to increased worry. As specific paternal risk factors are understudied, this study aimed to identify psychological, maternal, and infant-related medical factors associated with paternal postpartum worry in the context of TPB and PB.
METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 112 men were assessed during their partner's pregnancy (T1) and six weeks postpartum (T2). Trait anxiety, worry, and chronic stress were measured using the State-Trait Anxiety-Depression Inventory (STADI) and the Trier Inven

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between perceived rearing styles and the clinical expression of Eating Disorders (ED).
METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six patients diagnosed of an ED and 127 healthy student as controls selected from the Nursing College were evaluated for general psychopathology (STAI, BDI II, RSE), and for abnormal eating attitudes (EAT, EDI-II, BITE). The EMBU (‘my memories of upbringing’) was administered for the assessment of perceived parental rearing styles and was used a questionnaire to assess familial variables.

Uniparental disomy (UPD), the inheritance of two copies of a chromosome from one parent, can lead to recessive genetic disorders or imprinting effects. We report a case of autosomal recessive glycogen storage disease type 4 (GSD IV) due to maternal UPD of chromosome 3, representing the first reported instance of UPD leading to this rare disorder. To avoid an unjustified claim of misattributed paternity, the possibility of UPD should always be kept in mind in cases with the unique finding of the homozygous pathogenic variant only present in one parent. This case highlights the critical role of …
