Stimulus size mediates Gestalt processes in object perception - evidence from simultanagnosia.

Simultanagnosia caused by posterior temporo-parietal brain damage is characterized through an inability to recognize a global Gestalt from an arrangement of single objects while perception of single objects appears widely intact. We asked whether recognition of single objects in simultanagnosia is still intact if objects are really large, i.e. if they exceed the size of a usual computer screen. Single objects were presented in three different sizes: 'regular', 'medium', and 'large'. Simultanagnosia patients demonstrated a decrease of recognition performance with increasing object size; recogni

Functional Dissociations Within Posterior Parietal Cortex During Scene Integration and Viewpoint Changes.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is an anatomically heterogeneous brain region implicated in a wide range of cognitive operations, including egocentric spatial processing and both short- and long-term memory. Here, we report functional specificities of cytoarchitectonically defined subregions of PPC during the processing of scenes across changes in viewpoint. Participants (n = 16) saw photographs of familiar and unfamiliar places while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). On each trial, 4 viewpoints of the same place were presented, with either a plausible sequence of vi

Facial affect recognition in myasthenia gravis.

The assessment of facial expression is an important aspect of a clinical neurological examination, both as an indicator of a mood disorder and as a sign of neurological damage. To date, although studies have been conducted on certain psychosocial aspects of myasthenia, such as quality of life and anxiety, and on neuropsychological aspects such as memory, no studies have directly assessed facial emotion recognition accuracy. The aim of this study was to assess the facial emotion recognition accuracy (fear, surprise, sadness, happiness, anger, and disgust), empathy, and reaction time of patients

Differential neuronal responses to the self and others in the extrastriate body area and the fusiform body area.

The extrastriate body area (EBA) and the fusiform body area (FBA) are selectively activated by viewing human bodies. However, the role of these functionally defined brain areas in self-other discrimination is still unresolved. Thirty-one females were presented with 16 pictures of their own body and another body in a bikini and with scrambled images while fMRI was performed. Moreover, standardized stimulus material was used in order to localize the EBA and FBA. Region-of-interest analysis showed an enhanced BOLD response to the self-images relative to the non-self-images in the right EBA and FB

Visual memory of meaningless shapes in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Visual memory is an important cognitive ability, which has been studied in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). In such studies meaningful shapes were used more frequently. Since meaningless shapes provide a better assessment of short term visual memory, in this study we used them to evaluate visual memory in children and adolescents with ASDs compared to the normal group. METHODS: Four visual memory tests of Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) including Paired Associates Learning (PAL), Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM), Spatial Recognition Me

First report of generalized face processing difficulties in möbius sequence.

Reverse simulation models of facial expression recognition suggest that we recognize the emotions of others by running implicit motor programmes responsible for the production of that expression. Previous work has tested this theory by examining facial expression recognition in participants with Möbius sequence, a condition characterized by congenital bilateral facial paralysis. However, a mixed pattern of findings has emerged, and it has not yet been tested whether these individuals can imagine facial expressions, a process also hypothesized to be underpinned by proprioceptive feedback from t

Evaluating the contributions of top-down and bottom-up processing on eye movements during parallel visual search.

In the current study, we used an efficient visual search paradigm in a pseudo-realistic environment, with well-controlled search stimuli that allow a simultaneous evaluation of the impact of top-down and bottom-up factors on eye-movement patterns. Our stimuli varied along the color dimension to manipulate target-distractor similarity and our displays contained a salient stimulus of higher salience than target and other less-salient distractor stimuli. We manipulated task instructions, introducing a free-view instruction condition to serve as a baseline for how bottom-up contrast guided eye mov

Understanding the Eye-Brain Interface During Reading: Connecting Word Skipping and Comprehension Using Behavior-Contingent Fixation-Related Potentials.

Readers frequently skip words, often when they are expected, but sometimes even when they are contextually incompatible (e.g., the high frequency article the). Therefore, some skipping behaviors may be automatic (e.g., based on familiarity or length) rather than based on thorough word identification, raising the question of how related word skipping behavior is to comprehension of the meaning of the text. To test this question, we coregistered eye tracking and EEG recordings and measured fixation-related brain potentials (FRPs). We time-locked FRPs to the pretarget word before a three-letter t

Universal patterns in eye movements across lines of text.

This study examines cross-linguistic patterns of eye movements before, during, and after return sweeps-the saccades that move readers' gaze from one line of text to the next. Using data from 28 language samples representing 22 languages and multiple writing systems from the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus project, we tested whether spatial and temporal characteristics of interline transitions reflect universal oculomotor mechanisms or language-specific factors. Results show that extreme fixations cover about 80% of each line across all languages, and fixation durations follow consistent posit

Rapid orthographic and delayed phonological processing: ERP and oscillatory evidence from masked priming in Korean.

A central question in visual word recognition concerns whether orthographic and phonological codes are coordinated sequentially or in parallel during lexical access. Korean Hangul, an alpha-syllabic writing system with morphophonemic spelling principles, allows independent manipulation of orthographic and phonological syllable overlap. In a masked priming lexical decision task with EEG (N= 30), we contrasted orthographically identical primes (e.g., 식-식량), phonologically overlapping primes (e.g., 싱-식량), and unrelated primes. Event-related potentials and time-frequency representations (theta: 4-

Neither the number of feature dimensions nor their task relevance necessarily affect interocular grouping in binocular rivalry.

When one eye views half of stimulus A and half of stimulus B, and the other eye views the respective other halves, perception fluctuates. Among percepts reflecting monocular inputs (indicating typical binocular rivalry), percepts of undivided stimuli A and B occur. They indicate the grouping of parts of inputs from both eyes together, a process called "interocular grouping". Our study investigated if, similar to binocular rivalry, this process is affected by attentional modulation stemming from manipulating the task relevance of the stimulus features driving it. We used stimuli in which form (

Investigating the reversed congruency effect of gaze through the lens of joint attention.

Recent evidence has highlighted differences in attentional shifting elicited by gaze and arrow stimuli. Specifically, in a spatial Stroop task, arrows consistently produce a standard congruency effect (SCE; faster reaction times on congruent vs. incongruent trials). In contrast, averted gaze stimuli produce a reversed congruency effect (RCE; faster reaction times on incongruent vs. congruent trials). The origin of this discrepancy is still under debate. One hypothesis suggests that the RCE for gaze is driven by joint attention (the shared focus of two individuals on the same object). According

Acquired crowding dyslexia: A peripheral reading deficit other than neglect dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Crowding refers to the phenomenon whereby small visual objects above the acuity threshold are detected but unrecognizable when surrounded by nearby stimuli. It affects reading in healthy individuals and can be enhanced in reading impairments. By increasing the interletter space, crowding decreases. Previous evidence on patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) and peripheral dyslexia has shown a dissociation in sensitivity to spacing manipulation between those who mainly produced omissions and those characterized by substitutions in reading. Here, we wanted to verify the hypot

Enhanced inter-regional coupling of neural responses and repetition suppression provide separate contributions to long-term behavioral priming.

Stimulus identification commonly improves with repetition over long delays ("repetition priming"), whereas neural activity commonly decreases ("repetition suppression"). Multiple models have been proposed to explain this brain-behavior relationship, predicting alterations in functional and/or effective connectivity (Synchrony and Predictive Coding models), in the latency of neural responses (Facilitation model), and in the relative similarity of neural representations (Sharpening model). Here, we test these predictions with fMRI during overt and covert naming of repeated and novel objects. Whi

A functional dissociation of the left frontal regions that contribute to single word production tasks.

Controversy surrounds the interpretation of higher activation for pseudoword compared to word reading in the left precentral gyrus and pars opercularis. Specifically, does activation in these regions reflect: (1) the demands on sublexical assembly of articulatory codes, or (2) retrieval effort because the combinations of articulatory codes are unfamiliar? Using fMRI, in 84 neurologically intact participants, we addressed this issue by comparing reading and repetition of words (W) and pseudowords (P) to naming objects (O) from pictures or sounds. As objects do not provide sublexical articulator

Electrocortical indices of subjectively perceived confidence in episodic memory.

Electrophysiological studies on recognition memory have identified several brain signals that are associated with subjective perceived confidence. However, the extent these brain signals reflect a generic process and are independent of the type of information recognized remains an open question. To address this issue, twenty-seven healthy volunteers performed an episodic memory task while their electro-encephalogram (EEG) was recorded. Participants encoded a set of abstract pictures, and subsequently rated their confidence on recognition decisions. Similar to results reported in previous studi

From shape to meaning: Evidence for multiple fast feedforward hierarchies of concept processing in the human brain.

A number of fMRI studies have provided support for the existence of multiple concept representations in areas of the brain such as the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and inferior parietal lobule (IPL). However, the interaction among different conceptual representations remains unclear. To better understand the dynamics of how the brain extracts meaning from sensory stimuli, we conducted a human high-density electroencephalography (EEG) study in which we first trained participants to associate pseudowords with various animal and tool concepts. After training, multivariate pattern classification o

Impaired perception of simultaneous stimuli in a patient with posterior cortical atrophy: an attentional account.

We assessed visuospatial abilities in PCA. Sequential display of two simple geometric figures enhanced detection and discrimination relative to simultaneous display (Exps 1 & 2). Comparing edges of a single object enhanced discrimination relative to comparing edges of two separate objects, consistent with object-based attention (Exp. 3). Recognition of complex line drawings was spared for a single object but disrupted by an attention-grabbing small circle (Exp. 4). A covert orienting task showed difficulty disengaging from previous locations and attentional bias toward the right visual field (

The contribution of color information to rapid face categorization in natural scenes.

Color's contribution to rapid categorization of natural images is debated. We examine its effect on high-level face categorization responses using fast periodic visual stimulation (Rossion et al., 2015). A high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded during presentation of sequences of natural object images every 83 ms (i.e., at F = 12.0 Hz). Natural face images were embedded in the sequence at a fixed interval of F/9 (1.33 Hz). There were four conditions: (a) full-color images; (b) grayscale images; and (c) and (d) phase-scrambled images from Conditions 1 and 2, respectively, making f
