Perceptions matter: barriers to treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.

Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal deaths in developing countries. This report highlights the social and cultural factor … a viewpoint that there are few risks remaining after the baby is born. This may, in turn, shape the perception that the postpartum period is one in which less vigilance is required compared with labor and birth. Such beliefs are important to consider, as they may influence timely seeking of emergency obstetric care. Efforts to reduce the incidence of postpar …

Narcissists as "Victims": the role of narcissism in the perception of transgressions.

Narcissism is a set of traits that are motivated by the desire to establish and maintain a grandiose self-image. Consistent with this conceptualization, the authors hypothesized that narcissistic people perceive themselves to be the victims of other people's inter-personal transgressions more frequently than do less narcissistic people. In a 14-day diary study, the authors found that narcissism (particularly in its exploitiveness/entitlement dimension) was associated positively with the number and frequency of transgressions that respondents reported. The narcissism-victimization relationship

Innocent murmurs: the perception of the parents versus that of the child.

Innocent murmurs in childhood are common, and often they do not reflect cardiac disease. We have performed a prospective review, by means of a questionnaire, to clarify the parental perception of the innocent murmur identified in their child. Whenever possible, depending on age, we also sought the input of the child. Of a cohort of 63 infants and children with innocent murmurs, a response was obtained from 40 parents and 8 children to an initial questionnaire, with 26 parents replying to a second questionnaire a year later. No parent reported any symptoms in their children, or had imposed any …

Asthma management and perceptions in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Many First World countries have endeavored to measure the impact of asthma on individuals with asthma and, in addition to this quality of life evaluation, have attempted to define the quality of care for this common chronic illness. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this research probe was to assist the National Asthma Program in South Africa with the formulation and delivery of its outreach program to rural asthmatic patients. METHODS: A discussion/questionnaire document was compiled by Partners in Research from established literature. All interviews were conducted in either t

Physician's perceptions of fever in children. Facts and myths.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the knowledge and attitude of physicians, regarding fever in children. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 600 randomly selected pediatricians, family practice physicians, emergency medicine physicians and general practitioners, who practice in Saudi Arabia. Appropriateness of responses to questions was determined on the basis of current medical literature. A rectal temperature of 38.0 degrees C is generally accepted as indicative of fever in children. RESULTS: Of the 600 physicians surveyed, 419 (70%) completed and returned the questionnaire; 17%

Parents' perceptions of disclosure of the diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

The aim of the paper is to propose guidelines for good practice in disclosing the diagnosis of cerebral palsy to parents. The guidelines draw on an interview study with parents of 107 children, average age 24 months, in the South East Thames region. In addition case notes were examined, and mothers completed questionnaires to measure current levels of depression and coping strategies. Dissatisfaction with how the diagnosis had been disclosed was greater where children had been premature and/or low birth weight, where they developed more severe degrees of physical disability, and where the diag

Parent perceptions of symptom severity in Tourette's syndrome.

The families of 66 consecutive children with Tourette's syndrome were surveyed for their perception of symptom significance using a questionnaire. Families considered attention deficit and learning difficulties to be most significant, while motor and vocal tics were least important. When present, episodic rage was the most impairing symptom. Physicians must be aware of the significance of these comorbid symptoms for patients with Tourette's syndrome.

School nurses' perceptions of and experiences with head lice.

Researchers examined school nurses' perceptions of head lice, perceived self-efficacy in dealing with head lice, and personal experience in reducing head lice problems. Survey data from a two-wave mailing from 382 school nurses found most nurses supported a "no-nit" rule of forced absenteeism of any child with nits in their hair (60%). They perceived OTC treatments for head lice as very effective in killing adult lice (66%), and 9% perceived them as not effective. Nurses had a high efficacy expectation regarding their ability to control head lice (63%), and they had high outcome expectations r…

Contraceptive characteristics: the perceptions and priorities of men and women.

CONTEXT: Despite the fact that choosing a contraceptive method is often a decision made by couples, little is known about how men and women differ in their perceptions of the characteristics of various method types, and in the importance that they attach to those characteristics when choosing a contraceptive method. METHODS: The data analyzed here are subsets from two companion surveys conducted in 1991--1,189 men aged 20-27 who were surveyed in the National Survey of Men and 740 women aged 20-27 who were surveyed in the National Survey of Women. Multivariate ordered logit analysis is used to…

Travel health: perceptions and practices of travel consultants.

BACKGROUND: The global increase in international travel puts travelers at risk of travel-related morbidity and mortality. Prior to travel, most travelers have contact with a travel agency, thereby providing an opportunity for intervention. With this in mind we aimed to determine some of the travel-related health knowledge, practices and needs of travel consultants. METHODS: A cross sectional study was undertaken in which one travel consultant from each of 166 Western Australian travel agencies was asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five travel

Perceptions of control of students with and without cognitive disabilities.

Research in the educational and psychological literature has linked adaptive perceptions of control to positive adult outcomes like better employment, higher quality of life, and increased independence. In recent years these findings have been extended to people with mental retardation. Research with this population has suggested that they tend to be more externally oriented than peers without disabilities or peers with other types of disabilities. This research, however, has not provided direct comparisons between people with mental retardation and other populations. The present study compare…

Nurses' perceptions of urinary catheter selection and management.

Nurses are often responsible for the initiation of catherization procedures for patients within the hospital or community setting. This nursing role requires contemporary information on catheter selection and problem solving in the maintenance of urinary catheters. A descriptive survey with a questionnaire sent to registered and enrolled nurses (N = 709) within an Australian metropolitan area health service was undertaken to determine their current knowledge level in relation to catheter care practices. Registered nurses represented 91% of the sample, with 66% of the entire sample having 7 or

Questionnaire on the perceptions of patients about shoulder surgery.

We developed a 12-item questionnaire for completion by patients having shoulder operations other than stabilisation. A prospective study of 111 patients was undertaken before operation and at follow-up six months later. Each patient completed the new questionnaire and the SF36 form. Some filled in the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). An orthopaedic surgeon assessed the Constant shoulder score. The single score derived from the questionnaire had a high internal consistency. Reproducibility, examined by test-retest reliability, was found to be satisfactory. The validity of the que

Effects of flurazepam and zolpidem on the perception of sleep in insomniacs.

We have shown previously that the benzodiazepine hypnotic triazolam alters the perception of being awake or asleep in insomniacs, making it more likely that they will report having been asleep when awakened by an electronic tone at various times of the night. In the present study, we examined the question as to whether this is also true for other benzodiazepines as well as for nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics. Ten insomniacs were given placebo, flurazepam 30 mg and zolpidem 10 mg and were awakened at five times during subsequent sleep in a random-sequence repeated-measures study. Across all five aw…

Perception and awareness in phonological processing: the case of the phoneme.

The necessity of a "levels-of-processing" approach in the study of mental representations is illustrated by the work on the psychological reality of the phoneme. On the basis of both experimental studies of human behavior and functional imaging data, it is argued that there are unconscious representations of phonemes in addition to conscious ones. These two sets of mental representations are functionally distinct: the former intervene in speech perception and (presumably) production; the latter are developed in the context of learning alphabetic literacy for both reading and writing purposes. …
