INTRODUCTION: In the past, peritoneal surface malignancy (PSM) was considered as a final stage of cancer, and patients were offered the best supportive care. Recently, a new therapeutic alternative approach based on the combination of surgery with chemotherapy was developed. In this curative intent, the macroscopic disease was treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with perioperative chemotherapy, including neoadjuvant chemotherapy, hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, extensive intraoperative peritoneal lavage and early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherap

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common secondary cancerous disease to affect the peritoneal cavity, implying poor prognosis. Standard therapy consists of cytoreductive surgery in combination with adjuvant chemotherapy. To improve the therapeutic outcome, targeted therapy using radionuclides such as α-, β- and Auger emitters coupled to antibodies seems a promising option. Although β-emitters have shown promising results in preclinical and clinical Phase I/II studies, these results could not be confirmed in Phase III studies. Because α-particles very efficiently eradicate small tumor cell

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Echinococcosis occurs worldwide and can affect multiple organs. The liver (75%) and the lungs (15%) are the most common sites of occurrence followed by the spleen, kidney, bones and brain. Peritoneal hydatidosis commonly occurs secondary to a ruptured hydatid cyst of the liver or the spleen. Primary peritoneal hydatidosis is an extremely rare entity accounting for just 2% of all intra-abdominal hydatid disease. Most patients remain asymptomatic for years before presenting with vague abdominal symptoms su

A lumbar peritoneal (LP) shunt is a technique of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion from the lumbar thecal sac to the peritoneal cavity. It is indicated under a large number of conditions such as communicating hydrocephalus, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, normal pressure hydrocephalus, spinal and cranial CSF leaks, pseudomeningoceles, slit ventricle syndrome, growing skull fractures which are difficult to treat by conventional methods (when dural defect extends deep in the cranial base or across venous sinuses and in recurrent cases after conventional surgery), raised intracranial pres

BACKGROUND: The parasitic infection hydatidosis or echinococcosis, is a parasitic infection caused most frequently by flatworm Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatidosis is endemic in Turkey where animal husbandry is common. Eventhough, Hydatid disease can develop anywhere in the human body it is most frequently occurs in the liver and then the lungs. Rupture of hydatid cysts into the peritoneal cavity, although rare, still presents a challenge for the surgeon.
CASE: A 20-year-old man presented with ileus after 24 hours of mild abdominal distention, pain and nausea. On examination his abdomen was t

Postoperative adhesions occur after most surgical intraabdominal procedures, and small bowel obstruction is a common complication. Research has focused on the pathophysiology of adhesion formation and on the development of prophylactic barriers and drugs. The present paper provides a resume of existing research into peritoneal adhesion prophylaxis and pathophysiology. In conclusion, using minimal invasive technique is important to prevent adhesions. Adhesion studies should offer precise description of the adhesions and video documentation.

Peritoneal washing cytology (PWC) is a useful indicator of ovarian surface involvement and peritoneal dissemination by ovarian tumours. It may identify subclinical peritoneal spread and thus provide valuable staging and prognostic information, particularly for non-serous ovarian tumours. The role of PWC as a prognostic indicator for endometrial carcinoma is less clear, due in part to the questionable significance of identifying endometrial tumour cells in the peritoneum. Detection of metastatic carcinoma in PWC is based on the recognition of non-mesothelial cell characteristics. However a numb

A 43-year-old man complained that during the previous 2 years he had experienced a number of episodes of hepatic colic. After examination, we diagnosed a symptomatic cholelithiasis with a sclerosed and atrophic gallbladder. He underwent laparoscopic surgery. During the operation, we observed multiple peritoneal tumors that appeared to be metastases of a gallbladder cancer. The histological study demonstrated a benign chronic cholecystitis accompanied by multiple peritoneal cystic mesotheliomas, an extremely rare tumor in men. The etiology of cystic mesothelioma is still unclear. It has been su

This paper summarizes the author's thoughts about the use of cytoreductive surgery combined with intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (CS-IPHC) for treatment of peritoneal malignant mesothelioma. Pleural malignant mesotheliomas are by far more common (about ten- to thirty-fold) than the peritoneal variants (2.2 cases per 1 million in the US). Other locations (pericardium, tunica vaginalis) are very rare. It is well known that chemotherapy for mesothelioma is largely unsatisfactory, and measurement of treatment responses can be difficult. Single agent responses are all less than 20% with c

The local environment of peritoneal fluid (PF) surrounding the endometriotic implant is immunologically dynamic and links the reproductive and immune systems. Peritoneal fluid contains a variety of free floating cells, including macrophages, mesothelial cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils and mast cells. Macrophages are attracted to the peritoneal environment more abundantly than any other cell type. These scavengers promote cellular growth and viability through secretion of growth factors and cytokines. It is now becoming evident that cytokines play an important role in reproduction at various le

Peritoneal cysts are an infrequent postoperative complication. Few cases have been reported in the literature. This paper presents four cases seen after gynecologic operations. The cysts occurred 1.5 to 8 months postoperatively. The patients presented with pain and a large pelvic mass. No patient showed clinical or laboratory evidence of acute inflammation. Ovarian neoplasm was the leading diagnosis in three cases; the correct preoperative diagnosis of peritoneal cyst was made in only one case. Three patients were managed successfully with resection. One patient was treated with percutaneous d

Eight horses ranging in age from 4 days to 9 years were treated for peritonitis. Escherichia coli was isolated in four cases and Nocardia sp in one case. In each case, a catheter placed in the peritoneal cavity allowed drainage of a large amount of purulent fluid. Retrograde peritoneal lavage was performed through a Foley catheter or medical tubing, using Ringer's lactate solution containing kanamycin, povidone iodine, or nitrofurazone. All except two horses responded well to repeated lavage.

Diagnostic peritoneal tap has been an invaluable tool in the early diagnosis of acute abdominal catastrophy. We have discussed the role of abdominal paracentesis in 27 cases of blunt abdominal trauma and acute abdomen, where the diagnosis was in doubt despite clinical and emergency investigations. A simple method of tapping was adopted and there have been no complicatons.

Certain preventable complications in the treatment of renal failure, in part related to the composition of commercially prepared peritoneal dialysis solutions, continue to occur.Solutions are advocated which would contain sodium 132, calcium 3.5, magnesium 1.5, chloride 102 and lactate or acetate 35 mEq./1., and dextrose 1.5% or about 4.25%. Elimination of 7% dextrose solutions and a reduction of the sodium and lactate concentrations should reduce complications due to hypovolemia, hyperglycemia, hypernatremia and alkalosis. Reduction in the number of solutions should simplify the procedure and
