Mass administration of medicines in changing contexts: Acceptability, adaptability and community directed approaches in Kaduna and Ogun States, Nigeria.

Nigeria has the highest burden of NTDs in sub-Saharan Africa. Commitments to reach the control and elimination of many Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), particularly those amenable to preventive chemotherapy (onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminths, lymphatic filariasis and trachoma) by 2020 are detailed in the London declaration. Strategies to reach targets build on existing approaches, one of which is the use of community directed intervention (CDI) methods to deliver the mass administration of medicines (MAM). However, treatment using this approach has been inconsisten

Evidence of 'obstetric violence' in India: an integrative review.

The term 'obstetric violence' has been used to describe the mistreatment, disrespect and abuse or dehumanized care of women during childbirth by health care providers. This is a review of the existing literature in India on violence against women during childbirth. The review used the typology of Bohren et al. (2015). An internet search of PubMed, Google Scholar and JSTOR was conducted using the terms 'obstetric violence', 'mistreatment', 'disrespect and abuse' and 'dehumanized care'. Studies based on empirical research on women's experiences during childbirth in health facilities in India wer

A Perspective on Rabies in the Middle East-Beyond Neglect.

Rabies is a neglected but preventable viral zoonosis that poses a substantial threat to public health. In this regard, a global program has been initiated for the elimination of human rabies caused by rabid dogs through the mass vaccination of canine populations. Geographic areas vary greatly towards attainment of this objective. For example, while dog-mediated and wildlife rabies have been largely controlled in major parts of the Americas and Western Europe, the Middle East still grapples with human rabies transmitted by unvaccinated dogs and cats. Rabies prevention and control in the Middle

Refusal of oral polio vaccine in northwestern Pakistan: a qualitative and quantitative study.

BACKGROUND: Refusal of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) is a difficulty faced by the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) in multiple endemic areas, including the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPP), Pakistan. In 2007, we investigated community perceptions of the OPV and estimated the prevalence of OPV refusal in three districts in Swat Valley, KPP, a polio-endemic area. METHODS: Qualitative data concerning community perceptions were collected by focus group discussions among lady health workers (LHWs) and mothers with children <1 year old and by key informant interviews with local health managers an

Breaking worse: the emergence of krokodil and excessive injuries among people who inject drugs in Eurasia.

BACKGROUND: Krokodil, a homemade injectable opioid, gained its moniker from the excessive harms associated with its use, such as ulcerations, amputations and discolored scale-like skin. While a relatively new phenomenon, krokodil use is prevalent in Russia and the Ukraine, with at least 100,000 and around 20,000 people respectively estimated to have injected the drug in 2011. In this paper we review the existing information on the production and use of krokodil, within the context of the region's recent social history. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google Advanced Search, Google Scholar, YouTu

Provision of opioid substitution therapy services in Australian pharmacies.

Opioid dependence, despite being the subject of significant public funding, remains a costly burden to Australian society in human and economic terms. The most cost-effective public health strategy for managing opioid dependence is opioid substitution therapy (OST), primarily through the use of methadone or buprenorphine. Supervised dispensing of OST from specialist clinics and community pharmacies plays a crucial role in enhancing compliance, monitoring treatment and reducing diversion. Australia, compared with other countries in the world, ranks very high in illicit opioid use; hence there i

[Physical activity of schoolchildren in France. The paradox of a public health priority!].

BACKGROUND: For their health and an appropriate development, it is recommended that schoolchildren get on a daily basis a minimum of 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). With only about 11% of girls and 25% of boys completing these recommendations, French children are among the least active in the world. In addition, most of them spend almost 3h/day in front of a screen while it is generally suggested to limit children's screen time to less than 2h/day. METHODS: An inspection of available opportunities in the French context reveals many occasions for sufficient physical ac

'Salience syndrome' replaces 'schizophrenia' in DSM-V and ICD-11: psychiatry's evidence-based entry into the 21st century?

OBJECTIVE: Japan was the first country to abandon the 19th century term of 'mind-splitting disease' (schizophrenia). Revisions of DSM and ICD are forthcoming. Should the rest of the world follow Japan's example? METHOD: A comprehensive literature search was carried out in order to review the scientific evidence for the validity, usefulness and acceptability of current concepts of psychotic disorder. RESULTS: The discussion about re-classifying and renaming schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders is clouded by conceptual confusion. First, it is often misunderstood as a misguided attempt t

[Control campaigns against Triatoma infestans in a rural community of northwestern Argentina].

Control campaigns against Triatoma infestans, the principal vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, have relied on the application of residual insecticides and have regarded the system as homogeneous. Reinfestation generally starts in peri-domestic residual foci or in preexisting foci that escaped spraying for diverse reasons. From these foci T. infestans adults actively invade other sites, or they are transported passively within objects or goods from infested communities. In the absence of additional spraying of insecticides after the attack phase, domiciliary reinfestation expanded exponentially to re

Analysis of Pena Shokeir phenotype.

At this point in time, we recognize that "Pena Shokeir" is not a diagnosis or a specific syndrome but rather a description of a phenotype produced by fetal akinesia or decreased in utero movement. In its "full blown" form, it is characterized by polyhydramnios, intrauterine growth retardation, pulmonary hypoplasia, craniofacial and limb anomalies, congenital contractures, short umbilical cord, and lethality. From the cases thus far reported, we would anticipate that the phenotype is present in a very heterogeneous group of disorders--heterogeneous both with regard to the specific anomalies pre

On the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové.

Last autumn we commemorated the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové. A number of events were held and several publications were released, including a special issue of the Časopis lékařů českých entirely dedicated to this anniversary and to the faculty. At the ceremonial assembly of the academic community on 8 October 2025, the dean of the faculty, Professor Manďák, delivered an extensive speech in which he clearly described the historical circumstances of the faculty's foundation, its beginnings, development, and growth through va

Disproportionality analysis of oral adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination: Investigating demographic disparities and notoriety bias using a hybrid frequentist-Bayesian approach.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring vaccine safety is crucial for maintaining public confidence, particularly in relation to non-life-threatening adverse events (AEs) that may impact quality of life and contribute to vaccine hesitancy. While systemic reactions to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines are well documented, oral AEs remain underexplored, despite emerging reports linking vaccination to taste disturbances and other oral manifestations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to explore oral AEs following COVID-19 vaccination and to assess their potential to constitute signals of disproportio

Beyond biomedical control: governance, social protection, and system gaps in tuberculosis control in Kazakhstan - a qualitative study of decision-makers.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge globally and in Kazakhstan, despite progress in reducing incidence. Increasing evidence highlights the role of social and structural determinants in shaping TB risk, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. However, limited research has explored how decision-makers conceptualize these factors and identify system-level gaps in TB control. This study aimed to examine regional decision-makers' perspectives on TB burden, social protection, health system capacity, and governance in Kazakhstan. METHODS: A qualitative study wa

COVID-19 pandemic during the war in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia: a sequential mixed-methods approach.

INTRODUCTION: The overlapping global crises of war, pandemic, and inflation have hit the poorest countries the hardest. Political and security risks have risen in nearly all nations, with those lacking resources suffering from significant preparedness gaps. Similar to other developing regions, Ethiopia's Tigray has experienced many of these effects. This study analyzes the only available data to assess COVID-19 incidence and mortality trends and identify the key influencing factors. METHODS: A quantitative analysis was performed using the available incidence and mortality data from the Tigray

An ICT-enabled community oriented primary care intervention in mining communities during COVID-19 (2019-2022): perceived changes in the role and place of community health workers.

BACKGROUND: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative healt
