Total polyadenylated messenger RNA was prepared from the milked venom glands of the South African puff adder (Bitis arietans) and translated in an in vitro translation system. The products of cell free synthesis were immunoprecipitable with puff adder venom antiserum. An association has been suggested between celiac disease and diffuse interstitial lung disease of the hypersensitivity pneumonitis type in several reports from Europe. The present report consists of a study of 18 North American, biopsy-proved celiac patients, who were compared with an equal number of control subjects balanced for age, sex, and smoking. Protoplasmic extracts isolated from four different species of mycobacteria contained common and species-specific antigens. A cell wall-associated polysaccharide has been isolated from a noncapsulated mutant, 89R50, of the alpha-hemolytic filamentous streptococcus of provisional capsular type 89. Chemical analysis of the polysaccharide indicates that it consists of galactosamine, glucosamine, glucose, and phosphorus. Mice were inoculated with St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), Flanders (FLAN), California (CE), or Tensaw (TEN) viruses.
