Monovision and the Misperception of Motion.

Monovision is a common prescription lens correction for presbyopia [1]. Each eye is corrected for a different distance, causing one image to be blurrier than the other. Millions of people have monovision corrections, but little is known about how interocular blur differences affect motion perception. Here, we report that blur differences cause a previously unknown motion illusion that makes people dramatically misperceive the distance and three-dimensional direction of moving objects. The effect occurs because the blurry and sharp images are processed at different speeds. For moving objects, t…

Human infants can generate vergence responses to retinal disparity by 5 to 10 weeks of age.

Vergence is defined as a binocular eye movement during which the two eyes move in opposite directions to align to a target in depth. In adults, fine vergence control is driven primarily by interocular retinal image disparity. Although infants have not typically been shown to respond to disparity until 3 to 5 months postpartum, they have been shown to align their eyes from hours after birth. It remains unclear what drives these responses in young infants. In this experiment, 5- to 10-week-old human infants were presented with a dynamic random noise stimulus oscillating in disparity at 0.1 Hz ov

A New Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lens Based on Spherical Aberration.

PURPOSE: To describe a new extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) design offering multifocality by the variation of spherical aberration in the central optical zone. METHODS: The new IOL (Mini WELL; SIFI, Catania, Italy) is an aspheric IOL with positive spherical aberration in the central 2-mm zone and negative spherical aberration in the pericentral 1-mm annulus, the amount of which was determined by specific optic calculation. The new IOL design was tested at the optical bench to investigate depth of focus and sensitivity to tilt, decentration, and angle Kappa. Visual acuity simulat

Patient selection for monovision laser refractive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To investigate the preoperative characteristics and updated patient selection criteria for presbyopic patients undergoing laser refractive surgery for monovision. RECENT FINDINGS: The role of age, sex, ocular dominance, amount of monovision, and hyperopic versus myopic treatments is reviewed and reported. The presbyopic female patient is less likely to reject monovision. Patients with a strong sighting preference do less well due to reduced interocular blur suppression. Although myopes represent the majority of monovision patients, laser-corrected monovision in hyperopes is

Optimizing measurement of subjective amplitude of accommodation with defocus curves.

PURPOSE: To determine whether letter sequences and/or lens-presentation order should be randomized when measuring defocus curves and to assess the most appropriate criterion for calculating the subjective amplitude of accommodation (AoA) from defocus curves. SETTING: Eye Clinic, School of Life & Health Sciences, Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom. METHODS: Defocus curves (from +3.00 diopters [D] to -3.00 D in 0.50 D steps) for 6 possible combinations of randomized or nonrandomized letter sequences and/or lens-presentation order were measured in a random order in 20 presbyopic subje

A light adjustable lens with injectable optics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Technology exists today that could permit refractive precision unheard of at the present time plus the correction of higher-order aberrations and restoration of accommodation in presbyopic adults. RECENT FINDINGS: With the light adjustable lens, after surgery, the shape of the lens can be customized to treat spherical, cylindrical and other higher-order aberrations. The posterior surface of the lens can be adjusted to create both refractive multifocality and diffractive bifocality. It can be made out of a variety of materials, some of which can be injected into the capsule,

Sarfarazi dual optic accommodative intraocular lens.

The Sarfarazi accommodative intraocular lens, currently in clinical studies, is a single continuous silicon accommodative lens with dual optics and three haptics that mimic the action of the natural lens by using the contraction and relaxation of ciliary muscles. The lenses have been implanted in the eyes of patients. There have been no surgical or patient complications related to the lens, and its safety has been clearly demonstrated. Patient acceptance of the lens is excellent. Clinical enrollment will continue to expand.

The NuLens accommodating intraocular lens.

The NuLens intraocular lens (IOL) uses a new optomechanical concept to generate a wide range of dioptric power from minimal movements of the ciliary apparatus during accommodative effort. Basic study of the concept of optomechanics in the primate eye led to successful construction and implantation of functioning IOL prototypes.

The accommodation of lens implants.

Efforts devoted to the production of accommodative lens implants may be premature as there is conflicting information about the functional performance of the aged ciliary muscle which may determine their performance. Additional doubts exist on the performance of the ageing lenticular capsule in connection with some types of implant. Not only do these matters need resolving, but the change in the optical power of the eye needs also to be large enough for reading glasses to become unnecessary. However, not all these strictures apply to the development of accommodative lens implants for children

Characteristics of pupil responses during far-to-near and near-to-far accommodation.

The static and dynamic aspects of the pupil response associated with various amplitudes of far-to-near (accommodation) and near-to-far (disaccommodation) focusing responses were evaluated in this study. Dynamic refractive and pupillary changes were measured simultaneously during focusing responses to targets at real distances in 12 young (23-26 years) emmetropic subjects. The targets were presented alternately at far (6 m) and at one of six near positions from 1 D (1 m) to 6 D (16.7 cm) in 1 D steps. The latency, magnitude and peak velocity of pupil changes associated with accommodation and di
