Clinical Competency in Managing Malnutrition-Sarcopenia Syndrome Among Physical Therapists: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition and sarcopenia are interrelated health concerns among the elderly. Each condition is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, rehospitalization rates, longer hospital stays, higher healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Their combination leads to the development of "Malnutrition-Sarcopenia Syndrome" (MSS), characterized by reductions in body weight, muscle mass, strength, and physical function. Despite being preventable and reversible through nutritional and physical interventions, the clinical competence of physical therapists (PTs) in managi

Critical thinking: knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice.

PURPOSE: I respond to Kamhi's (2011) conclusion in his article "Balancing Certainty and Uncertainty in Clinical Practice" that rational or critical thinking is an essential complement to evidence-based practice (EBP). METHOD: I expand on Kamhi's conclusion and briefly describe what clinicians might need to know to think critically within an EBP profession. Specifically, I suggest how critical thinking is relevant to EBP, broadly summarize the relevant skills, indicate the importance of thinking dispositions, and outline the various ways our thinking can go wrong. CONCLUSION: I finish the com

Recalibrating Nursing Education: A Call to Action for Moving from Pedagogy to Andragogy.

AIM: The time has come for nursing education to fully abandon historic pedagogical models and embrace andragogical principles that honor the adult learner's capacity for self-direction and ownership of their professional development. BACKGROUND: Evidence demonstrates that andragogical approaches that emphasize self-direction, experiential learning, and problem-centered education better serve adult learners. Yet formal deep embrace remains uneven across nursing programs globally. METHOD: This analysis examines evidence distinguishing pedagogical from andragogical approaches in nursing educati

Psychological Resilience in Latin America Nursing Students Using the Wagnild and Young Scale: A Scoping Review.

Nursing students frequently experience considerable stress, impacting their mental well-being and preparedness for professional practice. Psychological resilience is paramount in navigating these demands. This scoping review synthesized studies on resilience levels in nursing students, particularly those in their entry year, utilizing the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale within the Latin American academic context. Following JBI methodology and PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search identified six relevant studies. Findings indicate that newly enrolled nursing students often exhibit low to mo

[Ethical, legal and care-related aspects of the competence to refrain from diagnostics and treatment : Choosing wisely].

BACKGROUND: Acting in the patient's best interest is the foundation of medical practice. Because medical interventions constitute bodily injury, they require justification. Actions that do not serve the patient's welfare or that cannot be substantiated on scientific grounds should be omitted. OBJECTIVE: How can a physician consciously and responsibly forgo diagnostic or therapeutic measures in the patient's interest? METHODS: Ethical, epistemic (i.e., knowledge-oriented and insight-oriented) and legal preconditions for the competence to refrain from diagnostics and treatment are examined as

Navigating Conflicts of Duty in Contexts of Compassionate Care: Utilitarian Reasoning as a Practice-Oriented Framework.

Compassionate nursing practice frequently requires nurses to navigate competing obligations, conflicting patient needs and constrained resources. While compassion motivates responsiveness to suffering, it does not always provide sufficient guidance for determining how such conflicts should be resolved. We argue that contemporary forms of utilitarianism may offer a useful framework for structuring compassionate practice in nursing within ethically pluralistic clinical environments. Drawing on contemporary utilitarian thought, particularly preference utilitarianism, the paper examines how attent

Becoming a designated prescribing practitioner: a pilot educational course.

With the need for an increase in non-medical prescribers (NMPs) in the NHS, there is a lack of designated prescribing practitioners (DPPs) in place to supervise trainee NMPs. An educational five-session course was developed using the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's (RPS) competency framework to support allied healthcare professional groups (HCPs) in fulfilling the role. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and confidence of learners after their attendance, on the competencies required to become a DPP. Pre and post training questionnaires were used after sessions, identifying pre-

A Qualitative Textual Analysis of Feedback Comments in ePortfolios: Quality and Alignment with the CanMEDS Roles.

INTRODUCTION: Competency-based education requires high-quality feedback to guide students' acquisition of competencies. Sound assessment and feedback systems, such as ePortfolios, are needed to facilitate seeking and giving feedback during clinical placements. However, it is unclear whether the written feedback comments in ePortfolios are of high quality and aligned with the current competency focus. Therefore, this study investigates the quality of written feedback comments in ePortfolios of healthcare students, as well as how these feedback comments align with the CanMEDS roles. METHODS: A

Integrating digital and narrative medicine in modern healthcare: a systematic review.

The increasing integration of digital technologies in healthcare, such as electronic health records, telemedicine, and diagnostic algorithms, improved efficiency but raised concerns about the depersonalization of care. Narrative medicine has emerged as a pedagogical and clinical response to this shift, emphasizing the value of patient stories, socio-cultural contexts, and reflective practice. Understanding how digital tools support, rather than undermine, narrative competencies is critical for developing a more human-centered healthcare education. This review systematically examined empirical

On AI's role in training professionals in assisted reproductive technology.

The rapid advancement of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) demands equally innovative approaches to professional training. Traditional educational models in reproductive medicine are often limited by inconsistent quality, variable clinical exposure, and prolonged learning curves. This paper proposes a comprehensive, AI-enhanced training framework designed to standardize and accelerate the education of clinicians, surgeons, and embryologists. The framework integrates six core domains: adaptive learning for theoretical knowledge, AI-driven simulations for clinical decision-making, virtual r

Implementation of a Mental Health Nursing Practicum in an Urban Homeless Shelter.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness suffer from deficient access to health care and disproportionately poor health outcomes. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) maintains learning competencies for prelicensure nursing students. Shelters are rich environments for students to garner experiences with the inequities plaguing our health care system and to fulfill AACN competencies. METHOD: We established a psychiatric and mental health nursing practicum at a homeless shelter. Following a retrospective pretest methodology, we evaluated student learning with the Health Ca

Do we need a critical care ultrasound certification program? Implications from an Australian medical-legal perspective.

Medical practitioners have a duty to maintain a certain standard of care in providing their services. With critical care ultrasound gaining popularity in the ICU, it is envisaged that more intensivists will use the tool in managing their patients. Ultrasound, especially echocardiography, can be an 'easy to learn, difficult to manage' skill, and the competency in performing the procedure varies greatly. In view of this, several recommendations for competency statements have been published in recent years to advocate the need for a unified approach to training and certification. In this paper, w
