Acne is a multifactorial disease driven by physiological changes occurring during puberty in the pilosebaceous unit (PSU) that leads to sebum overproduction and a dysbiosis involving notably Cutibacterium acnes. Four patients developed corneal ulcers associated with the use of disposable extended-wear hydrogel contact lenses. Bacteria were recovered from corneal ulcers in three of the patients. The protective effect of heat-killed Lactobacillus casei YIT9018 (LC 9018) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mice was compared with that of Corynebacterium parvum. BACKGROUND: The only approved triple-combination acne treatment – clindamycin phosphate 1.2%/adapalene 0.15%/benzoyl peroxide 3.1% (CAB) gel - demonstrated efficacy/safety in 12-week clinical trials.
