Bats are notorious reservoirs of several zoonotic diseases and may be uniquely tolerant of infection among mammals. Broad sampling has revealed the importance of bats in the diversification and spread of viruses and eukaryotes to other animal hosts. Vector-borne bacteria of the genus Bartonella are prevalent and diverse in mammals globally and recent surveys have revealed numerous Bartonella lineages in bats. We assembled a sequence database of Bartonella strains, consisting of nine genetic loci from 209 previously characterized Bartonella lineages and 121 new cultured isolates from bats, and

Environmental exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes acute photodamage, premature aging, and skin cancer, attributable to UV-induced genotoxic, oxidative, and inflammatory stress. The transcription factor NRF2 [nuclear factor erythroid 2 (E2)-related factor 2] is the master regulator of the cellular antioxidant response protecting skin against various environmental stressors including UV radiation and electrophilic pollutants. NRF2 in epidermal keratinocytes can be activated using natural chemopreventive compounds such as the apocarotenoid bixin, an FDA-approved food additive and

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and the most malignant primary brain tumor in adults, accounting for ~12-15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Despite advances in surgical, medical and radiation therapies, the mortality of GBM remains high, with a median survival ranging between 40 and 70 weeks. Similar to other primary brain tumors, the extracranial metastasis of GBM is extremely rare, occurring in <2% of patients. To demonstrate the clinical characteristics of this rare tumor, we herein present three cases of extracranial GBM metastasis: One to the lungs, which represents the longest repo

BACKGROUND: Radiosensitivity is an inheriting trait that mainly depends on genetic factors. it is well known in similar dose of ionizing radiation and identical biological characteristics 9-10 percent of normal population have higher radiation response. Some reports indicate that distribution of breast cancer, immune diseases including autoimmune diseases as example lupus, Myasthenia Gravies and even the rate of allergy are more frequent in left handed individuals compared to right handed individuals. The main goal of the present study is determination of radiosensitivity in left handed compar

Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) is not a static seminal parameter, since the longevity of sperm DNA decreases progressively with time following ejaculation or thawing. While the dynamics of SDF is a species-specific characteristic, in the case of humans, there is still significant variation within patients. To evaluate the suitability of the dynamic SDF assay to assess the adverse effects of agents that cause genetic damage, fresh semen samples from different donors were exposed in vitro to (1) increasing acute doses of ionizing radiation, (2) elevated temperature (41 °C and 45 °C), (3) acidic p

Ionizing radiation is known to cause DNA damage, including single-strand and double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs), and the unrepair of DNA damage, particularly DSBs, may cause chromosome aberrations. Although the etiology of gliomas remains unclear, exposure to ionizing radiation has been identified as the only established risk factor. We hypothesized that polymorphisms of candidate genes involved in the DSBs repair pathway may contribute to susceptibility to glioma. We used a haplotype-based approach to investigate the role of 22 tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms (tSNPs) of XRCC5, XRCC6 and

Aberrant expression of some tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes by thymocytes had been involved in the development of primary thymic lymphomas induced by gamma-irradiation, but genetic alterations affecting critical genes expressed by stromal cells have not been yet explored. This paper analyzes a series of such tumours induced in C57BL/6J and in F1 hybrids of BALB/c and C57BL/6J mouse strains. As expected, hystopathological analyses revealed profound disorganizations within the thymus with a poor demarcation of the cortical and medullar areas. Immunological and quantitative on-line RT-PCR a

The human genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is characterized by hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation and an elevated risk of malignancy. Epidemiological data support an increased risk for breast and other cancers in A-T heterozygotes. However, screening breast cancer cases for truncating mutations in the ATM (A-T mutated) gene has failed largely to reveal an increased incidence in these patients. It has been hypothesized that ATM missense mutations are implicated in breast cancer, and there is some evidence to support this. The presence of a large variety of rare missense variants

Glioblastoma multiforme is composed of multiple cellular compartments with different morphologic, kinetic, metabolic, vascular, and genetic properties. Optimal therapy may consist of a variety of therapeutic strategies designed for individual compartments, administered in close temporal relation. These concepts may turn out to be valid for other solid tumors as well. Microwave-induced hyperthermia can be used to treat metabolically quiescent, relatively hypoxic, nondividing cells (Go) otherwise resistant to radiation and chemotherapy. Similarly, polychemotherapy can treat a broad spectrum of c

Indigenous chickens are an essential part of biodiversity and a vital protein resource to humans, yet global warming and environmental changes pose serious threats to their survival and productivity. Therefore, assessing population adaptive capacity under shifting environments is crucial for breeding resilient animals, and guiding conservation strategies. Here, we integrated ecological and whole-genome resequencing data from 1 022 chickens from 44 Chinese indigenous populations to reveal genomic signatures of local adaptation. From 87 agroclimatic variables, we identified eight dominant enviro

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with poor prognosis, despite significant research efforts. The use of radiotherapy (RT) in PDAC treatment is constrained by intrinsic PDAC radioresistance and concern for normal tissue toxicity. Radiogenomics, the study of how genetic variants may influence RT response, could be incorporated into PDAC treatment. This approach offers a framework for personalized RT dosing guided by individual genomic data. Additionally, DNA damage response (DDR) inhibitors may sensitize PDAC to ionizing radiation to increase the targeted effectiveness of RT.

Chronic occupational exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) may affect male reproductive health but the underlying genetic and immunologic mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of IR on semen quality, CD56-positive natural killer (NK) cell concentration and sperm nuclear protein gene expression. In this case-control study a total of 60 men were assessed 30 radiology workers with IR exposure and 30 men in the control group. Semen analysis was performed according to WHO 2021 criteria. NK cells were determined by CD56 immunocytochemical staining and mRNA expressi

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is essential for non-shivering thermogenesis, a key survival mechanism for Arctic populations exposed to chronic cold. As BAT dissipates energy as heat, it presents a potential target for improving cardiometabolic health and treating obesity. The Arctic Inuit represents a unique metabolic model due to distinct genetic and environmental adaptations. This study advances methods in cardiometabolic research by investigating BAT activation in Arctic Inuit and ethnic Danes under cold exposure. A comparative crossover study of 20 Inuit and Danes includes two sessions: (A) t

Compared with conventional computed tomography (CT), spectral CT can simultaneously visualize internal structures and characterize the material composition of scanned objects by acquiring data at different energy spectra. Photon-counting CT (PCCT) and multi-source CT (MSCT) are two promising implementations of spectral CT. Besides, radiation exposure remains a long-standing concern in CT imaging, as excessive X-ray exposure may lead to genetic and cellular damage. For PCCT and MSCT, the radiation dose can be reduced by lowering the tube current and adopting complementary limited-view scanning,

Here, we report on the complexity of the taxonomy and species evolution within the monophyletic genus Rhamphus, which includes some of the smallest members of the Curculionidae family and whose species are morphologically almost indistinguishable from each other. Despite their similar appearance, we found high divergence and varying evolutionary rates among observed species groups living both in sympatry and allopatry in the western Palearctic. On the basis of subtle morphological differences and molecular evidence, we defined eight morphotypic groups and 14 species, of which 6 are newly descr
