Short- and long-term sunlight radiation and stroke incidence.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether long- and short-term sunlight radiation is related to stroke incidence. METHODS: Fifteen-year residential histories merged with satellite, ground monitor, and model reanalysis data were used to determine sunlight radiation (insolation) and temperature exposure for a cohort of 16,606 stroke and coronary artery disease-free black and white participants aged ≥45 years from the 48 contiguous United States. Fifteen-, 10-, 5-, 2-, and 1-year exposures were used to predict stroke incidence during follow-up in Cox proportional hazard models. Potential confounders and mediat

Evaluation of the effect of topical agents on radiation-induced skin disease by reflectance spectrophotometry.

OBJECTIVES: Radiotherapy may cause severe skin changes that significantly interfere with the patient's quality of life and reduce radiotherapy effectiveness. Many skin care instructions and various topical agents are recommended to help patients in the management of radiation skin reactions, but evidence to support the value of the topical treatments of the irradiated skin is lacking. In the present study we investigated the effects of topical agents used as supportive care to minimise radiation-induced skin disease using an instrumental method. METHODS: Subjects who were undergoing a planned

Effect of acute ultraviolet radiation on Galleria mellonella health and immunity.

For humans, acute and chronic overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause tissue damage in the form of sunburn and promote cancer(s). The immune-modulating properties of UV radiation and health-related consequences are not well known. Herein, we used the larvae of the wax moth Galleria mellonella, to determine UV-driven changes in cellular components of innate immunity. From immune cell (haemocyte) reactivity and the production of antimicrobial factors, these insects share many functional similarities with mammalian cellular innate immunity. After exposing insects to UVA or UVB for up

Primary radiation damage in bone evolves via collagen destruction by photoelectrons and secondary emission self-absorption.

X-rays are invaluable for imaging and sterilization of bones, yet the resulting ionization and primary radiation damage mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we monitor in-situ collagen backbone degradation in dry bones using second-harmonic-generation and X-ray diffraction. Collagen breaks down by cascades of photon-electron excitations, enhanced by the presence of mineral nanoparticles. We observe protein disintegration with increasing exposure, detected as residual strain relaxation in pre-stressed apatite nanocrystals. Damage rapidly grows from the onset of irradiation, suggesting that th

An index of the environmental thermal load imposed on exercising horses and riders by hot weather conditions.

There is a need to determine objectively the environmental heat load imposed on horses competing to an international standard in 3-day-events in environments where there is likely to be a high level of radiation added to high ambient temperatures and relative humidity; the presently used FEI 'Comfort Index' is severely limited in its applicability. It is proposed that the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index be used. This index was originally established for man exercising strenuously under harsh climatic conditions with high solar radiation levels. It may be defined as: WBGT = 0.7Twb + 0.3

Re-Evaluation of Patient-Sourced Radiation Doses in PET/CT.

BACKGROUND: New generation PET/CT devices provide quality images using low radiopharmaceutical activities. Dose monitoring is carried out for nuclear medicine personnel, other health personnel, and companions by determining the radiation dose emitted from low-activity patients to the environment. In particular, it is necessary to revise the working conditions of the personnel according to the radiation dose exposed. AIM: It was aimed to reevaluate the radiation dose rate transmitted to the environment from patients injected with 18F-FDG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 31 patients (14F, 17

Iterative Patient Testing of a Stimuli-Responsive Swallowing Activity Sensor to Promote Extended User Engagement During the First Year After Radiation: Multiphase Remote and In-Person Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Frequent sensor-assisted monitoring of changes in swallowing function may help improve detection of radiation-associated dysphagia before it becomes permanent. While our group has prototyped an epidermal strain/surface electromyography sensor that can detect minute changes in swallowing muscle movement, it is unknown whether patients with head and neck cancer would be willing to wear such a device at home after radiation for several months. OBJECTIVE: We iteratively assessed patients' design preferences and perceived barriers to long-term use of the prototype sensor. METHODS: In

Adverse events in radiation oncology: A case series from wake up safe, the pediatric anesthesia quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy in pediatric patients often requires anesthesia and poses environmental challenges. Monitoring must be done remotely to limit radiation exposure to the provider. Airway access can be limited by masks or frames. Care is often delivered in relatively inaccessible locations in the hospital. While individual institutions have reported their outcomes, this case series aims to review a multicenter registry of significant adverse events and make recommendations for improved care. METHODS: Wake Up Safe: The Pediatric Quality Improvement Initiative maintains a multisite,

Extended analysis of solid cancer incidence among the Nuclear Industry Workers in the UK: 1955-2011.

Radiation worker studies provide direct estimates of cancer risk after protracted low-dose exposures to external X-ray and gamma-ray irradiations. The National Registry for Radiation Workers (NRRW) started in 1976 and has become the largest epidemiological program of research on nuclear workers in the UK. Here, we report on the relationship between solid cancer incidence and external radiation at the low-dose levels in 172,452 NRRW cohort members of whom (90%) were men. This study is based on 5.25 million person-years of follow-up from 1955 through the end of 2011. In the range of accumulated

Interventional radiologists have a higher rate of chromosomal damage due to occupational radiation exposure: a dicentric chromosome assay.

OBJECTIVES: There are growing concerns regarding radiation exposure in medical workers who perform interventional fluoroscopy procedures. Owing to the nature of certain interventional procedures, workers may be subjected to partial-body radiation exposure that is high enough to cause local damage. We aimed to investigate the level of radiation exposure in interventional radiologists in South Korea by performing cytogenetic biodosimetry, particularly focusing on partial-body exposure. METHODS: Interventional radiologists (n = 52) completed a questionnaire, providing information about their wor

Contextual dimensions of pediatric tuberculosis imaging: radiation exposure, access, and system capacity in high- and low-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric tuberculosis diagnosis relies heavily on imaging, yet access, equipment standards, and dose monitoring differ widely across health systems. Evidence describing how these contextual factors influence imaging use and radiation exposure in children remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: To describe pediatric tuberculosis imaging practices and estimated radiation doses across two distinct resource settings, Spain (hospital-based, high-resource) and Mozambique (primary care-based, low-resource), to inform strategies for safe, equitable, and context-appropriate imaging. METHODS AND MATER

Lung Ultrasound May Support Diagnosis and Monitoring of COVID-19 Pneumonia.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) is characterized by severe pneumonia and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome in about 20% of infected patients. Computed tomography (CT) is the routine imaging technique for diagnosis and monitoring of COVID-19 pneumonia. Chest CT has high sensitivity for diagnosis of COVID-19, but is not universally available, requires an infected or unstable patient to be moved to the radiology unit with potential exposure of several people, necessitates proper sanification of the CT room after use and is underutilized in chil

Studies on internal exposure doses received by the cuban population due to the intake of radionuclides from the environmental sources.

Studies for the determination of radionuclide concentrations in foodstuffs, water and air were carried out in Cuba for the estimation of annual committed effective doses to members of the public as a result of environmental radionuclides via ingestion and inhalation. As a result of these studies, it was possible to determine the concentrations of 226Ra, 210Pb, 210Po, 232Th, 90Sr and 137Cs in different food groups that constitute the diet of the Cuban population, as well as the 222Rn concentrations in air. Based on these results and using previously obtained results for doses due to the 40K bod

Point-of-care ultrasound assessment of transrectal diameter to evaluate fecal load in children with anorectal malformations: adjunct imaging and utility in bowel management program.

INTRODUCTION: Children with anorectal malformations (ARM) frequently experience impaired bowel function and require long-term bowel management. Assessment of fecal load commonly includes abdominal radiographs, which provide information on overall stool distribution but may require repeated imaging and are subject to interobserver variability. Ultrasound measurement of the transrectal diameter (TRD) has been proposed as a radiation-free adjunct in functional constipation, but evidence in children with ARM remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) measurement

Multiphasic blood transcriptomic signatures of radioprotection by BIO 300, a synthetic genistein nanosuspension, in a nonhuman primate model of acute radiation syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic radioprotectors for pre-exposure administration are notably absent, creating a critical gap in radiation emergency preparedness and ARS management. BIO 300, a wet-nanomilled formulation of synthetic genistein, is in advanced development as a prophylactic radioprotector with demonstrated survival benefits in murine and nonhuman primate (NHP) models when administered prior to lethal radiation exposure. Longitudinal transcriptomic analysis enables characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying radioprotective drug action and supports development of potential bloo

Thoracic ultrasonography in the follow-up of pulmonary infarct.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary infarction is an ischaemic necrosis resulting from pulmonary arterial occlusion, occurring in approximately one-third of pulmonary thromboembolism cases. While computed tomography angiography remains the gold standard for diagnosis, its use in follow-up is limited by radiation exposure. Thoracic ultrasonography, a bedside, radiation-free and repeatable modality, may serve as an alternative tool for monitoring pulmonary infarction. CASE REPORT: We present a 44-year-old woman who developed sudden dyspnoea and back pain 1 week after venous surgery. Computed tomography ang

Clinical implementation of real time motion management for prostate SBRT: A radiation therapist's perspective.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The adoption of hypo-fractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for treating prostate cancer has led to an increase in specialised techniques for monitoring prostate motion. The aim of this study was to comprehensively review a radiation therapist (RTT) led treatment process in which two such systems were utilised, and present initial findings on their use within a SBRT prostate clinical trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 18 patients were investigated, nine were fitted with the Micropos RayPilotTM (RP) system (Micropos Medical, Gothenburg, SE) and nine were fitted w
