Natural killer cells and alterations in collagen density: signs of periradicular herpesvirus infection?

This study evaluated the presence and density of natural killer (NK) cells as well as collagen density in chronic apical periodontitis lesions and tried to find any correlations with concomitant herpesvirus infection or histopathological status of the lesion. Surgical specimens of chronic apical periodontitis lesions were surveyed for the presence and density of NK cells by immunohistochemical analysis. Collagen density in these lesions was quantified by means of histochemistry. All specimens were positive for the presence of CD57-positive cells. Topographically, CD57-positive cells were found

Herpesviruses in asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions: an immunohistochemical approach.

INTRODUCTION: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been recently detected in samples from apical periodontitis lesions by means of molecular biology techniques and a role in the pathogenesis of this disease has been suggested. The present study was designed to survey asymptomatic primary apical periodontitis lesions for the presence of HCMV- and/or EBV-infected cells by means of immunohistochemistry. METHODS: Apical periodontitis lesions were obtained from 35 patients [26 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) -seronegative patients and nine HIV-seropositive patients] af

Paraparesis As a Rare First Presentation Of Primary Hyperparathyroidism-Related Brown Tumor in The Thoracic Spine: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Brown tumor (BT) is defined as osteolytic lesion of an underlying state of hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism will activate osteoclasts which initiate active bone resorption foci of lytic-cysts with hemosiderin depositions that pigment it with its characteristic brown pathologic gross appearance. Devastating fractures and injuries can occur to affected bones and surrounding tissue that require emergent intervention and correction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a medically free 31-year-old female patient, who presented complaining of unsteadiness an

Does T2 inversion aid in identifying disc pathologies?

OBJECTIVE: T2 inversion sequence is used in routine radiology practice mainly to heighten contrast resolution within the region to be studied but no evidence exists in current literature to assess it's true efficacy for lumbar disc degeneration. The objective of this study was to analyse T2 inversion and evaluate it's efficacy in assessment of lumbar disc pathology,. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-centre study included 50 randomly selected patients presenting with back pain and radiculopathy. T2 inversion sequence was obtained in both axial and sagittal planes in addition to

Suprascapular nerve entrapment: experience with 28 cases.

Suprascapular nerve entrapment (SNE) in the suprascapular notch is a rare entity that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of radicular pain, as well as that of shoulder discomfort. Over a period of 10 years (1985-1995), the authors treated 28 cases of SNE in 27 patients by surgical decompression of the nerve. One patient underwent operation bilaterally within 5 years. Five patients presented with a history of trauma to the shoulder region. In three patients, a ganglion cyst was the origin of the nerve lesion. In 16 patients, the nerve problem was primarily related to athletic acti
