Identifying radiologically significant incidental breast lesions on chest CT: The added value of artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Breast lesions are a common but often missed incidental finding. We evaluated whether artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can efficiently detect radiologically significant incidental breast lesions (RSIBLs) missed by original interpreting radiologists (OIRs) on chest CT examinations. METHODS: This retrospective multi-institutional study analyzed chest CT examinations performed in June 2017 by a national teleradiology practice. Visual classifier (VC) and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms flagged potential RSIBLs, which were reviewed independently by two primary reade

Uncertainty Quantification in Automated Detection of Vertebral Metastasis Using Ensemble Monte Carlo Dropout.

The accurate and early detection of vertebral metastases is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Although deep-learning models have shown potential in this area, their lack of prediction reliability and robustness limits their clinical utility. To address these challenges, we propose a novel technique called Ensemble Monte Carlo Dropout (EMCD) for uncertainty quantification (UQ), which combines the Monte Carlo dropout and deep ensembles. In this retrospective study, we analyzed 11,468 abdominal computed tomography images from 116 patients diagnosed with vertebral metastases and 957 images f

Visual field and orbital computed tomography correlation in dysthyroid optic neuropathy due to thyroid eye disease.

Purpose: The pathogenesis of dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) in thyroid eye disease (TED) is thought to be compression of the apical optic nerve by hypertrophied extraocular muscles. We correlated worsening DON to the area occupied by extraocular muscles. Methods: Records of adults with TED DON evaluated from 1/1/2013 to 1/1/2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Each patient's visual field with the worst mean deviation (MD) was selected. Orbit CT scans were reviewed. Reformatted oblique coronal images were created perpendicular to the optic nerve. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the orbit and

Filtered back projection revisited in low-kilovolt computed tomography angiography: sharp filter kernel enhances visualization of the artery of Adamkiewicz.

PURPOSE: The reliability of assessment of the artery of Adamkiewicz before the aortic repair is highly dependent on the display of the continuity of this artery with the aorta, mainly around the vertebral pedicle, by computed tomography angiography (CTA). We hypothesized that the sharp filter kernel can improve visualization of this continuity of the vessel structure because of its edge enhancement and high-spatial resolution. This study was performed to compare the subjective and objective image quality of spinal CTA reconstructed with sharp and smooth filter kernels. METHODS: We retrospecti

Qualitative Comparison of Noncontrast Head Dual-Energy Computed Tomography Using Rapid Voltage Switching Technique and Conventional Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) allows image reconstruction along a spectrum of virtual monochromatic energy levels. We sought to determine the optimal energy level(s) for viewing supratentorial brain and posterior fossa and compare those to polychromatic conventional CT (CCT). Furthermore, we compared 2 groups scanned with separate DECT imaging protocols. In addition, we quantify the radiation dose of DECT versus CCT. METHODS: Forty-four nonacute patients underwent noncontrast DECT and recent CCT on the same scanner. Dual-energy CT images of the head were reconstructed at
