Fracture behavior of discontinuous fiber-reinforced composite inlay-retained fixed partial denture before and after fatigue aging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the fracture behavior of inlay-retained fixed partial dentures (IRFPDs) made of experimental short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) block before and after cyclic fatigue aging. METHODS: Five groups (n=20/group) of three-unit posterior IRFPDs were fabricated. The first and second groups were CAD/CAM fabricated from experimental SFRC blocks or lithium-disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, IVOCLAR) materials, the third group comprised a three-dimensional-printed composite (Temp PRINT, GC), and the fourth and fifth groups com

How to Intervene in the Caries Process: Dentin Caries in Primary Teeth.

For an ORCA/EFCD consensus, this review systematically assessed available evidence regarding interventions performed and materials used to manage dentin carious lesions in primary teeth. A search for systematic reviews (SRs) and randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with a follow-up of at least 12 months after intervention was performed in PubMed, LILACS, BBO, and the Cochrane Library. The risk of bias tool from the Cochrane Collaboration and the PRISMA Statement were used for assessment of the included studies. From 101 screened articles, 2 SRs and 5 RCTs, which assessed the effectiveness of inte

Increased mortality from infectious pneumonia after occupational exposure to inorganic dust, metal fumes and chemicals.

OBJECTIVES: There are epidemiological studies indicating that exposure to metal fumes is a risk factor for infectious pneumonia. Whether occupational exposure to other agents, such as inorganic dust or chemicals, also increases the risk for infectious pneumonia is not clear. The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether occupational exposure to respiratory pollutants and irritants increases the risk for infectious pneumonia. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. Setting Swedish male construction workers. Participants 320,143 male construction workers exposed to inorganic dust (asbestos, m

Induction of cyclooxygenase-2 expression in human pulp cells stimulated by dentin bonding agents.

OBJECTIVES: Histological investigations have demonstrated that dentin bonding agents can induce pulpal inflammation. However, there is little information on the precise mechanisms about dentin bonding agent-induced pulpal inflammation. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible enzyme believed to be responsible for prostaglandin synthesis at the site of inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dentin bonding agents on the expression of COX-2 in human pulp cells. STUDY DESIGN: Human pulp cells were cultured from extracted impacted third molars using an explant techni

Tubular occlusion prevents water-treeing and through-and-through fluid movement in a single-bottle, one-step self-etch adhesive model.

Water entrapment occurs at resin-dentin interfaces of one-step self-etch adhesives. We hypothesized that by preventing water fluxes from dentin, any water entrapment would be attributed to incomplete removal of adhesive solvents. We tested this hypothesis by bonding to transparent carious dentin containing occluded dentinal tubules. An experimental single-bottle, one-step self-etch adhesive was applied to flat surfaces of caries-affected dentin surrounded by sound dentin, with or without pulpal pressure. Resin-dentin interfaces were examined with TEM after silver-impregnation. Although caries-

Macromolecular leakage benath full cast crowns. Part II: The diffusion of lipopolysaccharide and dextran.

Fifteen extracted molars were prepared for crowns. Crowns with access ports (one facial, one lingual) were cast in gold. Teeth and crowns luted with provisional cement with filters inserted into the ports were immersed in a solution of labeled macromolecules (FITC-dextran, TRITC-LPS) and evaluated for leakage. Filters were retrieved and analyzed by use of fluorescent microscopy. Leakage of LPS and dextran occurred as early as 2 weeks beneath crowns luted with a provisional cement (NoGenol).

An application of a splint purposeful resin-bonded fixed partial denture after orthodontic treatment: a case report.

An adult male patient who had lost his maxillary left central incisor seven years ago in a traffic accident presented with a chief complaint about his unaesthetic appearance associated with the loss of his maxillary left central incisor space, a Class III molar occlusion, and an anterior open bite malocclusion due to tongue-thrust swallowing. Fixed orthodontic treatment was rendered following fan-type expansion of the maxilla. A Maryland bridge as a minimally invasive dentistry approach was used as a retention appliance and the patient's aesthetic appearance was restored.

Evaluation of the genotoxicity of zinc oxide eugenol-based, calcium hydroxide-based, and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers by comet assay.

Three main types of root canal sealer are currently commonly used in pulp treatment: zinc oxide eugenol-based, calcium hydroxide-based, and epoxy resin-based sealers. In the present study, the genotoxicity of sealer on oral carcinoma cells was evaluated by single-cell gel electrophoresis assay (comet assay). The whole length of the comet and the diameter of the head were measured using an image analysis system. The results were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance to compare the various means. The zinc oxide eugenol-based sealers (Canals, Canals-N, and Tubilseal) did not always cause a dos

Which mechanical and physical testing methods are relevant for predicting the clinical performance of ceramic-based dental prostheses?

PURPOSE: The survival and performance of clinical prostheses with a ceramic component are probabilistic in nature. Only under very rare circumstances will all of the prostheses in a group exhibit either 100% successes or 100% failures over a period of 5 years or more. Prosthesis failure may be defined as any condition that leads to replacement. These conditions include secondary caries, irreversible pulpitis, excessive wear of opposing tooth surfaces, excessive erosion and roughening of the ceramic surface, ditching of the cement margin, unacceptable esthetics, cracking, chipping and fracture.
