Glaucoma and neuroinflammation: An overview.

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by well-defined optic disc morphological changes (i.e., cup enlargement, neuroretinal border thinning, and notching, papillary vessel modifications) consequent to retinal ganglion cell loss, axonal degeneration, and lamina cribrosa remodeling. These modifications tend to be progressive and are the main cause of functional damage in glaucoma. Despite the latest findings about the pathophysiology of the disease, the exact trigger mechanisms and the mechanism of degeneration of retinal ganglion cells and their axons have not been completely elucidated

Microscope-Assisted Hypertensive Retinopathy Diagnosis Using Deep Learning Models.

The retina is the most crucial part of the human eye, and it can be affected due to hypertension. However, retinal abnormalities due to hypertension are termed hypertensive retinopathy (HR). A severe stage of HR can lead to complete blindness if not diagnosed and treated on time. Manually analyzing retinal images for HR diagnosis is time-consuming and prone to errors. This research article provides a novel technique based on U-Net and Dense-Net for automatic HR detection and grading through retinal images. The presented method consists of preprocessing, vessel segmentation, artery or vein (A/V

Stagnation thrombosis: an iris fluorescein angiography study.

Two cases of central retinal venous thrombosis with gross involvement of the arterial supply to the retina are described. The iris fluorescein angiography showed massive leakage of dye into the anterior chamber. The iris angiographic findings in 48 cases of central venous thrombosis are compared with those of 19 patients with central retinal artery occlusion. In venous obstruction pupillary and extrapupillary vessels leak both in recent and in long-standing cases, whereas in arterial occlusions extrapupillary leakage occurs exclusively in recent cases. Comparatively, the 2 cases of stagnation

Crosstalk Between Microglia and Müller Glia in the Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Role and Therapeutic Value of Neuroinflammation.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive neurodegeneration disease that causes photoreceptor demise and vision impairments. In AMD pathogenesis, the primary death of retinal neurons always leads to the activation of resident microglia. The migration of activated microglia to the ongoing retinal lesion and their morphological transformation from branching to ameboid-like are recognized as hallmarks of AMD pathogenesis. Activated microglia send signals to Müller cells and promote them to react correspondingly to damaging stimulus. Müller cells are a type of neuroglia cells that ma

Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy with Retinal Hemorrhage.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) causes subacute visual loss, and, in the acute phase, the optic disc shows hyperemia, peripapillary telangiectasia, and swelling of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Rarely, retinal hemorrhage may be present. In this study, we investigated LHON cases with retinal hemorrhage in the acute phase. Among 82 cases (164 eyes) of LHON who visited the Inoue Eye Hospital, retinal hemorrhage was observed in 5 cases (5 eyes). The age at onset was 36 (27-46) years, with 4 male cases. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed the presence of the m.11778G > A variant

[Molecular genetics in diagnosis of Coats disease: combination of oligogenic variants associated with different forms of hereditary retinal dystrophy].

Coats disease (OMIM 300216) is a form of hereditary retinal dystrophy, which occurs due to congenital abnormality of retinal vessels and features unilateral exudative vitreoretinopathy. Coats disease mostly occurs sporadically; its genetic cause is still undetermined. Molecular genetic research including whole exome sequencing by the NGS method was used to define a genetic cause of the observed phenotype. Two heterozygous variants in different genomic loci associated with other forms of hereditary retinal dystrophy were detected, a rare variant in the HMCN1 gene c.9571C>T, p.(Arg3191Cys), and …

EGFR inhibitor, AG1478, inhibits inflammatory infiltration and angiogenesis in mice with diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most frequently occurring microvascular complications of diabetes. Recent evidence indicates that epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) are critical pathogenic players in non-neoplastic diseases, including diabetic cardiomyopathy and DR. However, the precise pathogenic mechanism of EGFR in DR has yet to be fully understood. In this study, we developed a type 1 diabetic early-stage retinopathy mouse model using injections of streptozotocin and an oxygen-induced end-stage diabetic retinopathy (OIR) model characterized by hypoxia-induced revascularizati

Repair of Total Tractional Retinal Detachment in Norrie Disease: Report of Technique and Successful Surgical Outcome.

Norrie disease is a rare, but devastating cause of pediatric retinal detachment, universally portending a poor visual prognosis. This paper describes successful surgical management of an infant with total retinal detachment associated with Norrie disease mutation. The infant was a full-term white male who presented with bilateral total funnel retinal detachments (RDs). He underwent genetic testing, which demonstrated single-point mutation 133 G>A transition in exon 2 of the NDP gene. The retinal detachment was managed with translimbal iridectomy, lensectomy, capsulectomy, and vitrectomy. Caref

LFU-Net: LoRA-enhanced frequency-aware U-Net with recursive residual attention fusion for retinal segmentation.

Long-tail segmentation is a crucial challenge in computer vision, where most models prioritize common head classes over rare tail classes. This problem is particularly prominent in retinal vessel segmentation, as conventional approaches often struggle to overcome underrepresented faint vessels, noise-induced boundary ambiguity, and excessive parameters that prohibit portable deployment. To address these challenges, we introduce LFU-Net, a lightweight and clinically applicable method for long-tail retinal vessel segmentation. It integrates a three-component ensemble: a Frequency-Aware Encoder w

Coats' Disease Diagnosed During Adulthood.

Coats' disease is an idiopathic non-hereditary condition first described by Coats in 1908 as a congenital retinal telangiectatic and aneurysmal disease associated with retinal exudation. Its presentation is classically in early childhood. We report a rare case of Coats' disease that first presented during adulthood in a 35-year-old male. The patient presented with visual loss in the left eye for two months. His visual acuity was counting fingers in the left eye and fundus examination revealed extensive lipid exudation in the macula with telangiectatic vessels and microaneurysms with vascular m

Coronary artery and retinal vascularization by optical coherence tomography angiography: are eyes the window to the heart?

PURPOSE: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and its assessment still relies on invasive diagnostic procedures requiring contrast, such as coronary angiography (CAG) or computed tomography angiography (CCTA). The retinal vasculature is the only microvascular site in the human body that can be assessed non-invasively, and it has been described as a promising method for predicting cardiovascular risk since the classification of hypertensive retinopathy in the 19th century. Unfortunately, most classifications still rely on qualitative findings, which e
