Forty-four patients admitted 1978-1986 were examined which suffered from leptospirosis. The authors bring a new contribution on the clinic of leptospirosis. They confirm that leptospirosis often assumes a polymorphic clinical degree. They stress the importance of an early diagnosis.

A 35-year-old male went fishing at the Agano River side in the suburbs of Toyosaka City, in August 1977. He was admitted to the hospital then with the chief complaints of high fever and severe headache on the 5th day of illness. A selective medium consisting of trypticase soy agar with 4% glycerol, 5 mg/l crystal violet, 50 mg/l neutral red and 4 mg/l of gentamicin was devised for isolation of Pseudomonas pseudomallei from clinical specimens. In the early stage of Leptospirae infection there is always blood stream invasion so blood culture is the best diagnostic test and permit precise etiologic identification. In the paper methods and selective media are suggested and the possibility of mistake so called "pseudo Spirochaetes" for Leptospirae is emphasized. Personal experience about the streght of blood culture in comparison with Martin and Pettit serumdiagnostic tests is reported.

Simple tests for the study of picornavirus epidemic conjunctivitis are described. The virus was successfully isolated in wells of microtitration plates containing HeLa cell suspension and the isolates were easily identifiable by neutralization in the micrometabolic inhibition test. For the estimation of antibody titre in patients' sera, the latter procedure was found to be as reliable as neutralization in tissue culture tubes. These micromethods would enable virus laboratories not equipped for tissue culture work to study this new ocular disease, which has been endemic in a number of countries
