Body Composition in Adults Born at Very Low Birthweight-A Sibling Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals born preterm at very low birthweight (VLBW, < 1500 g) tend to attain a smaller adult body size compared with term-bo … /or lifestyle factors. METHODS: This cohort study featured 77 adults born at VLBW and 70 term-born siblings. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessment took place at a mean age of 29 years. Effects of enzyme replacement therapy in sibling cases of hypophosphatasia of varying severities.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a hereditary disorder characterized by impaired bone mineralization caused by decreased tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) activity. Specifically, HPP is caused by a loss-of-function variant in the ALPL gene encoding TNSALP. Although genotype-phenotype correlations have been described, phenotypic differences have been reported in patients with the same variants, even within families. The proband, a girl, was suspected to have in utero fractures of the long bones, suggestive of osteogenesis imperfecta. No respiratory impairment was observed after birth; h

An unusual cause of tetany in an infant born to a consanguineous couple with a sibling death.

In this case report, we present an infant with abnormal body movements in her second month. She was born of a third-degree consanguineous marriage, and the previous sibling, who had similar complaints beginning in the fourth month, expired in the fifth month. On reviewing the video recorded by parents, the abnormal movements were suggestive of tetany. Biochemical investigations showed hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia, hypoparathyroidism, normal urinary excretion of calcium and urinary magnesium losses. Intravenous calcium and magnesium corrections were given, and oral supplements were initiated.

Mid-childhood autism sibling recurrence in infants with a family history of autism.

Autism sibling recurrence in prospective infant family history studies is ~20% at 3 years but systematic follow-up to mid-childhood is rare. In population and clinical cohorts autism is not recognized in some children until school-age or later. One hundred and fifty-nine infants with an older sibling with autism underwent research diagnostic assessments at 3 years and mid-childhood (6 to 12 years (mean 9)). We report the autism sibling recurrence rate in mid-childhood and compare developmental and behavioral profiles at mid-childhood and 3 years in those with earlier versus later recognized au

Non-rheumatic Streptococcal Acute Myocarditis: The First Documented Sibling Case.

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the cardiac muscle that manifests as chest pain, dyspnea, and other signs of heart failure. ST segment changes with elevated cardiac biomarkers mimic acute coronary syndromes. It is most commonly caused by viruses like the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Coxsackie B virus, but it can also be due to cardiotoxic drugs like cyclophosphamide and cocaine or caused by a systemic infiltrative process like sarcoidosis or collagen vascular diseases. One relatively common bacterial cause of myocarditis is beta-hemolytic Group A Streptococcus, which is well known to

"He is normal": phenomenological considerations of child/adolescent's perception of the disabled sibling.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the child/adolescent's perception of the disabled sibling. METHOD: Qualitative research, with a phenomenological approach, conducted between 2018 and 2019, in a municipality in the south of Brazil, with 20 children/adolescents who are siblings of people with disabilities, through a phenomenological interview. Respecting ethical precepts, hermeneutics was used for interpretation. RESULTS: The child/adolescent perceives his/her disabled sibling as a normal person, given his/her behavior, way of being and intellectual capacity. Still, it understands him as a special bei…

Impact of coping styles on substance use in persons with psychosis, siblings, and controls.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is overrepresented in patients with psychosis. Maladaptive coping has been proposed as one of the mechanisms which might underlie this high prevalence. Patients are known to apply more maladaptive coping compared to the healthy population. However, it is unknown whether coping is associated with the use of different substances across those with different vulnerability for psychosis, and whether coping mediates the possible association between life events and substance use. METHODS: In this multicenter, cohort study, 429 patients, 504 siblings, and 220 controls were i…

Nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide: Sibling rivalry in the family of epigenetic regulators.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) were previously only known for their toxic properties. Now they are regarded as potent gaseous messenger molecules (gasotransmitters) that rapidly transverse cell membranes and transduce cellular signals through their chemical reactions and modifications to protein targets. Both are known to regulate numerous physiological functions including angiogenesis, vascular tone, and immune response, to name a few. NO and H2S often work synergistically and in competition to regulate each other's synthesis, target protein activity via posttranslational modifi

A Novel PUS1 Mutation in 2 Siblings with MLASA Syndrome: A Review of the Literature.

ABSTRACT: Myopathy, lactic acidosis, and sideroblastic anemia (MLASA) is a rare mitochondrial disorder characterized by MLASA. Variable features of this condition include failure to thrive, and developmental delay or intellectual disability. Additional symptoms consist of cognitive impairment, skeletal and dental abnormalities, delayed motor milestones, cardiomyopathy, dysphagia, and respiratory insufficiency. MLASA has previously been associated with mutations in pseudouridylate synthase 1 (PUS1) and YARS2. PUS1 encodes the nuclear PUS1 enzyme, which is located in both the nucleus and the mit

Clonazepam improves the symptoms of two siblings with novel variants in the SYNJ1 gene.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the SYNJ1 gene have been associated with early-onset of atypical Parkinson's disease or severe neurodegeneration with intractable seizures. Due to the rarity of the disease, there were limitations in the quality of available treatment options for SYNJ1-related diseases. METHODS: Two affected siblings from a non-consanguineous family were evaluated through a set of clinical and laboratory tests. The genetic screening was performed through exome next generation sequencing. SYNJ1 mutant transcripts were purified and cloned into the vectors for Sanger sequence of single-s…
