Sleep disturbances in primary aldosteronism are associated to depressive symptoms - Could specific mineralocorticoidreceptors be a common pathway?

Symptoms of depression and anxiety are frequent in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) and are supposed to be independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). As patients with PA have an increased cardiovascular risk compared to patients with essential hypertension, sleep disturbances, which often accompany depressive and anxiety symptoms, may be an additional contributor to the cardiometabolic consequences of PA. To clarify this possible link we investigated 132 patients with PA at baseline and after one year after initiation of treatment either by adrenalectomy (ADX) or miner

Effect of external sleep disturbance on sleep architecture in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use external sleep disturbance as a model to evaluate sleep architecture in climacteric women before and after menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). METHODS: Seventeen perimenopausal and 18 postmenopausal women underwent a polysomnography protocol: an adaptation night, a reference night and a sleep disturbance night with one hand loosely tied to the bed for blood sampling. The sleep architecture of the reference and disturbance nights were compared. The 24-h urinary free cortisol concentration (UFC) was measured. The procedure was repeated after 6 months on MHT or p

Sleep-Related Urologic Dysfunction.

This article reports on the epidemiology, prevalence, and physiopathology of sleep-related urinary dysfunction, a new syndromic category proposed by the recently revised ICSD-3-TR classification. Sleep enuresis, whether primary or secondary, monosymptomatic or plurisymptomatic, will be reviewed in terms of risk factors, comorbidity, and diagnostic and therapeutic indications. A definition of nocturia and its impact on patients' health, quality of life, and mortality will follow. Finally, the impact of urge incontinence on various medical and neurologic disorders will be discussed. Special emph

Polysomnographic Assessment of Sleep Disturbances in Cancer Development: A Historical Multicenter Clinical Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Many cellular processes are controlled by sleep. Therefore, alterations in sleep might be expected to stress biological systems that could influence malignancy risk. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the association between polysomnographic measures of sleep disturbances and incident cancer, and what is the validity of cluster analysis in identifying polysomnography phenotypes? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study using linked clinical and provincial health administrative data on consecutive adults free of cancer at baseline with polysomnograph

[Application of Polysomnography in Common Neurodegenerative Diseases].

At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of most neurodegenerative diseases are still not fully understood, which poses challenges for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases. Sleep disorders are one of the common chief complaints of neurodegenerative diseases. When patients suffer from comorbid sleep disorder and neurodegenerative diseases, the severity of their condition increases, the quality of their life drops further, and the difficulty of treatment increases. A large number of studies have been conducted to monitor the sleep of patients with neurodegenerative disease

Study protocol: assessing SleeP IN infants with early-onset atopic Dermatitis by Longitudinal Evaluation (The SPINDLE study).

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin condition in childhood. Most (50-60%) children with AD report sleep disturbance, which is secondary to itch, dry skin, inflammation, and abnormal circadian rhythm. Sleep is essential for brain development, learning, and growth. Sleep disruption in early life is associated with cognitive and psychological dysfunction in later life. The aim of this study is to describe in detail the sleep architecture of infants with early-onset atopic dermatitis (AD), compared to controls, by using EEG polysomnography, sleep actigra

Systematic review: auditory stimulation and sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Auditory stimulation devices (white and pink noise) are used to mask sounds and facilitate relaxation and sleep; however, the effectiveness of this intervention is not well established. This systematic review examined the scientific literature for the effect of specific types of auditory stimulation on sleep outcomes in adults. METHODS: The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement guided this review. Searches were conducted in 9 databases for intervention studies that could easily be employed in clinical practice. We excluded othe

Symptom dynamics among nightmare sufferers: An intensive longitudinal study.

Nightmares are considerably prevalent in the general population and are known to be closely associated with a variety of mental disorders. However, not much is known about the immediate antecedents and consequences of nightmares. Therefore, we used intensive longitudinal assessments to investigate the night-to-night within-person associations between nightmares on the one hand and fear of sleep, somatic as well as cognitive pre-sleep arousal, and sleep quality on the other hand. Young women with regular nightmares (n = 16) maintained a sleep diary for around 30 days; upon awaking, the particip

Influence of Parathyroidectomy on Sleep Quality in Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

We investigated the impact of parathyroidectomy on sleep quality in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Thirty consecutive patients with pHPT were enrolled in the study within 1 year. pHPT was diagnosed by typical symptoms accompanied by an elevated level of parathormone. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used for the evaluation of sleep 1 day before and 6 months after parathyroidectomy. The mean total PSQI score was elevated to 6.8 ± 0.6 points before surgery, which was in the pathological cut-off of greater than ≥5, indicating impaired sleep quality. After parathyro

Sleep, dreams, nightmares, and sex-related differences: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the available findings on sex-related differences for sleep disorders, dreams and nightmares. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We explored the PubMed, EMBASE and Google Scholar electronic databases, with regards to the searching terms 'sleep', 'dreams', and 'nightmares' associated with 'sex' and/or 'gender'. Moreover, other supplementary terms for the searching strategy were 'chronobiology', and 'circadian rhythm'. Due to the relative paucity of studies including separate analysis by sex, and especially to their wide heterogeneity, we decided to proceed wi

Should We Lose Sleep Over Sleep Disturbances After Sports-Related Concussion? A Scoping Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVE: A single, severe traumatic brain injury can result in chronic sleep disturbances that can persist several years after the incident. In contrast, it is unclear whether there are sleep disturbances after a sports-related concussion (SRC). Considering growing evidence of links between sleep disturbance and neurodegeneration, this review examined the potential links between diagnosed SRCs and sleep disturbances to provide guidance for future studies. METHODS: The scoping review undertook a systematic search of key online databases (Scopus, MEDLINE, SportDiscus, and Web of Science) usin

[The effect of long-term beta-blockers on melatonin secretion, sleep quality, and vascular brain damage].

UNLABELLED: Circadian rhythm of pineal melatonin production is paced by the thalamus suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) depending on the lighting conditions via signal transduction to pinealocytes beta-receptors. Melatonin is a natural regulator of many physiological processes, and the decrease of its synthesis leads to various diseases, in particular, insomnia and metabolic disorders. It is known that administration of beta-blockers reduces melatonin production, but the data showing clinical significance of melatonin reduction associated with beta-blockers administration are still contradictory.

Prevalence of sleep disturbances in patients with chronic non-cancer pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

In individuals with chronic pain, sleep disturbances have been suggested to increase suffering, perception of pain, and to negatively affect long-term prognosis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to determine the pooled prevalence of sleep disturbances in chronic non-cancer pain patients with no other sleep disorders, using the patient-rated questionnaires Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Multiple databases were searched for studies reporting the prevalence of sleep disturbances in chronic pain patients. The meta-analysis was conducted to exa

The association between worry and rumination with sleep in non-clinical populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Associations have been found between perseverative cognition (PC: worry and rumination) and somatic markers of ill-health. Further studies have reported associations between sleep and both PC and poorer health. As such, sleep disturbance may represent a pathway between PC and ill-health. Therefore, studies assessing the relationship between PC and sleep in non-clinical populations were synthesised. Meta-analyses (k = 55) revealed small- to medium-sized associations between higher PC and poorer sleep quality (SQ, r = -0.28), shorter total sleep time (TST, r = -0.15) and longer sleep onset laten

Physiological and pharmacological perspectives of melatonin.

The pineal gland is a interface between light-dark cycle and shows neuro-endocrine functions. Melatonin is the primary hormone of pineal gland, secreted at night. The night-time melatonin peak regulates the physiological functions at dark. Melatonin has several unique features as it synchronises internal rhythm with daily and seasonal variations, regulates circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycle. Physiologically melatonin involves in detoxification of free radicals, immune functions, neuro-protection, oncostatic effects, cardiovascular functions, reproduction, and foetal development. The precise
