The unexplored bacterial lifestyle on leaf surface.

Social interactions impact microbial communities and these relationships are mediated by small molecules. The chemical ecology of bacteria on the phylloplane environment is still little explored. The harsh environmental conditions found on leaf surface require high metabolic performances of the bacteria in order to survive. That is interesting both for scientific fields of prospecting natural molecules and for the ecological studies. Important queries about the bacterial lifestyle on leaf surface remain not fully comprehended. Does the hostility of the environment increase the populations' cel…

Chromosomal and gonadal sex have differing effects on social motivation in mice.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in brain development are thought to lead to sex variation in social behavior. Sex differences are fundamentally driven by both gonadal (i.e., hormonal) and chromosomal sex, yet little is known about the independent effects of each on social behavior. Further, mouse models of the genetic liability for the neurodevelopmental disorder MYT1L Syndrome have shown sex specific deficits in social motivation. In this study, we aimed to determine if hormonal or chromosomal sex primarily mediate the sex differences seen in mouse social behavior, both at baseline and in the con

Interpersonal synchrony in caregiver-child dyads with autism spectrum condition: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Interpersonal synchrony (IS), the temporal alignment of behavior and biological processes between interaction partners, is a key mechanism for social engagement and co-regulation. While well-studied in neurotypical populations, its nature in caregiver-autistic child dyads remains fragmented. This scoping review maps the current knowledge on IS in these dyads across behavioral and biological levels and identifies methods and interactional contexts used for its measurement. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science on October 12, 2024, with an upd

Joint action with human versus robot partners across psychological domains: a systematic review.

When they act together, people engage a myriad of cognitive and social processes which are increasingly investigated in various areas of psychological and neuroscientific research. The study of human-robot joint action holds promises not only in terms of applying findings to robotics but also providing innovative methodologies that can help disentangle the determinants of human-human joint action. But, how does acting jointly with a robot compare to co-acting with a human? Research investigating this question is sparse and an overview of relevant findings is missing. Therefore, this paper prov

Edible agents with perceptible minds: A psychological study of human perception in human-food interaction.

Investigating the psychological and cognitive mechanisms of eating living beings is important for understanding ethical judgments and decisi … cognitive effects of eating moving food. Building on this, we developed an edible agent capable of social interaction through vocalization and evaluated its psychological effects. We examined how people perceive the minds of edible agents with different vocalization types and behaviors, and how this perception influences reluctance to eat and guilt. In the experime …

Impact of social-functioning and sleep on quality of life in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The impact of impairment of social functioning and sleep on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), is unknown in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). The value of the Chronic Acquired Polyneuropathy Patient-Reported Index (CAP-PRI) to identify potential social functioning and sleep issues is equally unknown. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation of social functioning and sleep using the "Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease" (SCOPA) in 40 subjects with clinically-stable CIDP through a structured questionnaire. We assessed HR-QoL thr

Association between childhood maltreatment and social functioning in individuals with affective disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment has been linked to impairments in social functioning and social cognition in adults with affective disorders. However, conclusions have been limited by inconsistent findings across different maltreatment subtypes and social domains. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between childhood maltreatment (overall and subtypes - physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, and/or physical and/or emotional neglect) and different domains of social functioning and social cognition in adults with affective disorders (bipolar disorder o

Joint evolution of multiple social traits: a kin selection analysis.

General models of the evolution of cooperation, altruism and other social behaviours have focused almost entirely on single traits, whereas it is clear that social traits commonly interact. We develop a general kin-selection framework for the evolution of social behaviours in multiple dimensions. We show that whenever there are interactions among social traits new behaviours can emerge that are not predicted by one-dimensional analyses. For example, a prohibitively costly cooperative trait can ultimately be favoured owing to initial evolution in other (cheaper) social traits that in turn chang

Targeting social skills deficits in an adolescent with pervasive developmental disorder.

Social skills deficits are a defining feature of individuals diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which can impair functioning and put the individual at higher risk for developing problem behavior (e.g., self-injury, aggression). In the current study, an adolescent with PDD displayed inappropriate social behavior (inappropriate comments, social withdrawal, and touching others without their permission) during social interactions. An intervention using instructions, differential reinforcement, and corrective feedback successfully reduced inappropriate social b…

[Effect of speech estimation on social anxiety].

This study investigates the effect of speech estimation on social anxiety to further understanding of this characteristic of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). In the first study, we developed the Speech Estimation Scale (SES) to assess negative estimation before giving a speech which has been reported to be the most fearful social situation in SAD. Undergraduate students (n = 306) completed a set of questionnaires, which consisted of the Short Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (SFNE), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and the SES. The influence of group Tai Chi practice on loneliness among older adults living alone in Wuhan: the mediating role of social self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and a decline in physical activity in older age are associated with adverse effects on physical and mental health. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of group Tai Chi sessions on loneliness and social self-efficacy among older adults in Wuhan, China. METHODS: A randomized controlled study was conducted using linear mixed-effects modeling (LMM), incorporating fixed effects for the factors "group" and "time," their interaction, as well as random intercepts at the participant level. The sample consisted of 140 participants aged between 65 and 85 year

Maternal Socioeconomic Opportunity and Race-Ethnicity Intersect to Influence Fetal Brain Volumes in Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental outcome disparities, partially linked to socioeconomic status, race-ethnicity, persist in congenital heart disease (CHD). Fetal brain development is a key predictor of subsequent neurocognitive outcomes. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on fetuses with and without complex CHD at 2 sites. Childhood Opportunity Index (COI) and maternal race-ethnicity were used to assess neighborhood and individual-level maternal social determinants of health, respectively. The contributions of COI and race-ethnicity on fetal brain volume, controlling for fetal ges

Acute prenatal exposure to ethanol on gestational day 12 elicits opposing deficits in social behaviors and anxiety-like behaviors in Sprague Dawley rats.

Our previous research has shown that in Long Evans rats acute prenatal exposure to a high dose of ethanol on gestational day (G) 12 produces social deficits in male offspring and elicits substantial decreases in social preference relative to controls, in late adolescents and adults regardless of sex. In order to generalize the observed detrimental effects of ethanol exposure on G12, pregnant female Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to ethanol or saline and their offspring were assessed in a modified social interaction (SI) test as early adolescents, late adolescents, or young adults. Anxiety-li…

Housing deprivation and depression in older adults living alone: the moderating roles of social capital and urban-rural region.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Older adults are particularly affected by social and environmental factors, including social capital, living areas, and housing deprivation, as they often spend substantial time at home or within their local communities. These influences are especially pronounced for those living alone, due to limited social networks and interactions. This study aimed to examine the role of social capital and living areas in the relationship between housing deprivation and depression among older adults living alone. METHODS: The study analyzed data from 1,557 older adults living alone,

MeCP2 Deficiency Alters the Response Selectivity of Prefrontal Cortical Neurons to Different Social Stimuli.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the MeCP2 gene, is characterized by cognitive and social deficits. Previous studies have noted hypoactivity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pyramidal neurons of MeCP2-deficient mice (RTT mice) in response to both social and nonsocial stimuli. To further understand the neural mechanisms behind the social deficits of RTT mice, we monitored excitatory pyramidal neurons in the prelimbic region of the mPFC during social interactions in mice. These neurons' activity was closely linked to social preference, especi…

Unusual repertoire of vocalizations in adult BTBR T+tf/J mice during three types of social encounters.

BTBR T+tf/J (BTBR) is an inbred mouse strain that displays social deficits and repetitive behaviors analogous to the first and third diagnostic symptoms of autism. We previously reported an unusual pattern of ultrasonic vocalizations in BTBR pups that may represent a behavioral homolog to the second diagnostic symptom of autism, impaired communication. This study investigated the social and vocal repertoire in adult BTBR mice, to evaluate the role of ultrasonic vocalizations in multiple social situations at the adult stage of development. Three different social contexts were considered: male-f
