Health-related quality of life pattern and correlates: cross-sectional assessment of people living with HIV in South Carolina.

This cross-sectional study assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its correlates among 386 people living with HIV (PLWH) receiving care at a large immunology center in South Carolina, USA. This study used the WHO Quality of Life (WHOQOL-HIV BREF) scale to measure HRQoL across six domains: physical, psychological, independence, social, environmental, and spiritual. The study found that mean HRQoL scores were statistically significantly higher in males in the social domain. PLWH with higher levels of resilience reported higher scores on the physical, psychological, independence, and

Measuring behavioral responses to a social stressor: Does the Social Performance Rating Scale have utility beyond social anxiety disorder?

The observer-rated Social Performance Rating Scale (SPRS) indexes anxious behaviors exhibited in social contexts. Although the SPRS has been used almost exclusively to study social anxiety disorder (SAD), other emotional disorders are also characterized by heightened responses to social stressors, hinting that the SPRS could serve as a transdiagnostic state measure of behavioral anxiety. To explore this possibility, adults with generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder (n = 105) and adults with no psychopathology (n = 35) delivered a speech to a committee of mock behavioral exp

Functional Limitations, Social Integration, and Daily Activities in Late Life.

OBJECTIVES: Disability in late life has been associated with increases in receiving care and loss of autonomy. The Disablement Process Model suggests that physical impairments lead to functional limitations that contribute to disabilities in managing household, job, or other demands. Yet, we know surprisingly little about how functional limitations are related to activities throughout the day among community-dwelling adults or the possible moderating role of social integration on these associations. METHODS: Community-dwelling adults (N = 313) aged 65 and older completed a baseline interview

Geographic correlates of primary and secondary syphilis among men who have sex with men in the United States.

PURPOSE: Primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been increasing; however, there is a lack of research on geographic factors associated with MSM P&S syphilis. METHODS: We used multiple data sources to examine associations between social and environmental factors and MSM P&S syphilis rates at the state- and county-level in 2014 and 2015, separately. General linear models were used for state-level analyses, and hurdle models were used for county-level models. Bivariate analyses (P < .25) were used to select variables for adjusted models. RESULTS: In 2014 and

Maternal Socioeconomic Mobility and Preterm Delivery: A Latent Class Analysis.

Objective Growing evidence suggests that maternal socioeconomic mobility (SM) is associated with pregnancy outcomes. Our study investigated the association between maternal SM from childhood to adulthood and the risk of preterm delivery (PTD), and examined heterogeneity of associations by race/ethnicity. Methods In this study, 3019 pregnant women enrolled from 5 Michigan communities at 16-27 weeks' gestation (1998-2004) provided their parents' socioeconomic position (SEP) indicators (education, occupation, receipt of public assistance) and their own and child's father's SEP indicators (educati

The contribution of housing and neighbourhood conditions to educational inequalities in non-communicable diseases in Europe: findings from the European Social Survey (2014) special module on the social determinants of health.

BACKGROUND: Social gradients have been found across European populations, where less affluent groups are more often affected by poor housing and neighbourhood conditions. While poor housing and neighbourhood quality have been associated with a range of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), these conditions have rarely been applied to the examination of socioeconomic differences in NCDs. This study therefore asks ‘to what extent does adjusting for poor housing and neighbourhood conditions reduce inequalities in NCDs among men and women in Europe’? METHODS: Our analysis used pooled-data from 20 Eur

[Asperger's syndrome: continuum or spectrum of autistic disorders?].

Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PPD) refers to the group of disorders characterised by delayed or inappropriate development of multiple basic functions including socialisation, communication, behaviour and cognitive functioning. The term,,autistic spectrum disorders" was established as a result of the magnitude of the intensity of symptoms and their proportions observed in all types of pervasive developmental disorders. Asperger's Syndrome (AS) remains the most controversial diagnosis in terms of its place within autism spectrum disorders. AS if often described as an equivalent of High Func

"Pushing" physical activity, and justice.

OBJECTIVE: There has been an increasing realization of the need for environmental interventions to increase physical activity levels in the population. Although promising, the impact of these strategies in reducing obesity-related disparities will be limited by the presence of inequities in the distribution of activity-related resources in the community. Advocacy efforts are critically needed to ensure that all communities benefit from environmental strategies being implemented. METHOD AND RESULTS: This paper describes two activist community-based organizations in Southern California, The Cit

The Role of Social Cohesion in Preventing Child Abuse Among Rural Chinese Left-Behind Children.

Child abuse is a significant public health issue that can affect children's physical and mental health. However, few studies have examined rural Chinese left-behind children. The role of social cohesion of rural Chinese communities in the prevention of child abuse remains understudied. The present study aims to investigate certain factors that could reduce child abuse problems, placing a special focus on the protective role of social cohesion, especially for left-behind rural children. Data were collected from a sample of 1,049 school-aged rural children from the largest middle school in China

Evaluating the interplay between subclinical levels of mental health symptoms and coordination dynamics.

Viewed under the broad theoretical umbrella of an embodied-embedded approach to psychological activity, body movements can be seen to play an essential role in shaping social interaction. Of note, research concerning the embodiment of social cognition has documented key differences in non-verbal behaviour during social interaction for individuals diagnosed with a range of disorders, including social anxiety disorder and autism spectrum disorder. The present work sets out to extend these findings by better understanding the interplay between subclinical variation in psychopathology and social-m

Social Support and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Elderly Individuals Living Alone in South Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important component of healthy aging. Elderly individuals living alone with health risks have rapidly increased in South Korea. Inadequate social support has been associated with poor HRQoL in elderly individuals who are currently living alone. Although studies of HRQoL in elderly subjects who live alone have been conducted, studies of the relationships between social support and HRQoL have rarely targeted the elderly individuals living alone. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors that are related to HRQoL among the
