Quantifying the impact of social groups and vaccination on inequalities in infectious diseases using a mathematical model.

BACKGROUND: Social and cultural disparities in infectious disease burden are caused by systematic differences between communities. Some diff … l framework that integrates a mechanistic model of disease transmission with a demographic model of social structure, calibrated to epidemiologic and empirical social contact data. RESULTS: Our model suggests realistic differences in two key factors contributing to the rates of transmission-contact rate and susceptibility-between two social groups can lead to twi …

Ecomapping: an innovative research tool for nurses.

AIM: This paper explores the use of ecomaps as a research tool for capturing data, using the example of the dynamic nature of social networks from which informal carers of people living with motor neurone disease draw their support. BACKGROUND: The need for social support in relation to health maintenance and disease management has been identified in the literature but little has been published about ways to investigate support networks. Existing discussion in the literature about the use of ecomaps as a clinical tool in social work creates a valuable framework for data collection which can b

Neural Underpinnings of Social Stress in Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a complex brain disorder that is characterized by craving, withdrawal, and relapse, which can be perpetuated by social stress. Stemming from an acute life event, chronic stress, or trauma in a social context, social stress has a major role in the initiation and trajectory of substance use. Preclinical literature shows that early life stress exposure and social isolation facilitate and enhance drug self-administration. Epidemiological evidence links childhood adversity to increased risk for drug use and demonstrates that cumulative stress experiences are predictive

The Role of Social Ties and Social Support in Maintaining Physical and Mental Well-Being Among Korean Americans Living with Chronic Hepatitis B.

Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB), a serious disease requiring lifelong management, disproportionately affects Asian Americans, including Korean Americans. Many Korean Americans experience linguistic and sociocultural barriers, potentially worsening health challenges. While social ties and social support are well-recognized determinants of health, their role within unique populations merits exploration. Using longitudinal survey data, we identified patterns of social ties and social support among Korean Americans living with CHB, and how these related to self-assessed physical and mental health over t

'Ugh…how do you catch that?': a qualitative study of the impact of psoriasis on social interactions.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is associated with considerable psychological disability. Due to the visibility of skin lesions, patients with psoriasis commonly report experiences of stigmatization and public rejection. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to gain insights into individuals' experiences of the extent, type and management of psoriasis-related social interactions and the long-term impact on social functioning. METHODS: Qualitative, semi-structured interviews (n = 24 participants) were used to elicit the views and experiences of patients with psoriasis. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analys

Social phobia in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) such as multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity but little is known about the prevalence of social phobia in IMID, or the factors associated with social phobia. We aimed to determine the prevalence of social phobia in MS, IBD and RA, and the factors associated with social phobia in these IMID. METHODS: We obtained data from the enrollment visit of a cohort study in IMID of whom 654 participants were eligible for this analysis

The relation between living alone and depressive symptoms in older Korean Americans: do feelings of loneliness mediate?

OBJECTIVES: As the opposite end of the continuum from social integration, social isolation may put individuals at a greater risk of poor mental health. Conceptualizing living alone as an objective and structural indicator of social isolation and loneliness as subjective perceptions of social isolation, the present study hypothesized that the relation between living alone and depressive symptoms would be mediated by the feelings of loneliness. Using older Korean Americans as the target population, the mediation model was examined in consideration of the contextual factors such as demographics (

The relationship of social environment, social networks, and health outcomes in the Seattle Longitudinal Study: two analytical approaches.

This study examined the relation of social networks and perceived social environment to health outcomes and cost utilization over a 1-year period in a community sample of 387 (173 males, 214 females). Two analytical strategies, a variable-oriented approach and a subject-oriented approach, were used to complement each other: structural equation modeling assessed the direct relationship between social relationships and health, while cluster analysis examined how social relationship patterns were related to health outcomes. Lower levels of perceived social environment were associated with an incr

Cognitive behavioral therapy for youth with social anxiety: differential short and long-term treatment outcomes.

This study examined social anxiety symptoms and/or diagnosis as a predictor of differential short- and long-term cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) outcomes. Ninety-one anxiety-disordered youth participated in a randomized clinical trial of CBT. Semi-structured interviews provided dimensional clinical severity ratings (CSRs) for children's principal anxiety disorder at pretreatment, posttreatment, 1-year and 7.4-year follow-up assessments for youth with versus without pretreatment social anxiety. Thirty-nine youth presented with either principal (n=17), secondary (n=11), or tertiary social p

Social appearance anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of negative evaluation: distinct or shared risk factors for social anxiety and eating disorders?

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. Social appearance anxiety (i.e., fear of negative evaluation of one's appearance), general fear of negative evaluation, and perfectionism have each been proposed as risk factors for both social anxiety disorder and the eating disorders. However, no research to date has examined all three factors simultaneously. Using structural equation modeling in two diverse samples (N=236; N=136) we tested a model in which each of these risk factors were uniquely associated with social anxiety and eating disorder symptoms. We found support for social

Interpersonal and role-related schema influence the relationship with the dominant 'voice' in schizophrenia: a comparison of three models.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations in psychosis often contain critical evaluations of the voice-hearer (for example, attacks on self-worth). A voice-hearer's experience with their dominant voice is a mirror of their social relationships in general, with experiences of feeling low in rank to both voices and others being associated with depression. However, the direction of the relationship between psychosis, depression and feeling subordinate is unclear. METHOD: Covariance structural equation modelling was used with data from 125 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia to compare three 'cau

Psychosocial Experiences of Adults With Lower Limb Fracture in Ghana: A Qualitative Study.

Patients' psychosocial experiences vary and can influence their recovery. An insight into these experiences can facilitate patients' perioperative care. This study explored and described the psychosocial experiences of adults aged 18 years and older with lower limb fractures. A qualitative exploratory, descriptive design was undertaken among 18 purposively sampled postoperative adults with lower limb fractures who had undergone surgery at a hospital in Ghana. Data were collected using semi-structured face-to-face individual interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The 2 main themes ide

Improving Cardiovascular Health Through the Consideration of Social Factors in Genetics and Genomics Research: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) is affected by genetic, social, and genomic factors across the life course, yet little research has focused on the interrelationships among them. An extensive body of work has documented the impact of social determinants of health at both the structural and individual levels on CVH, highlighting pathways in which racism, housing, violence, and neighborhood environments adversely affect CVH and contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease. Genetic factors have also been identified as contributors to risk for cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests t

The role of simple emotion recognition skills among school aged boys at risk of ADHD.

Poor social skills and behavioral problems are a major component of ADHD. The different explanations offered so far, such as cognitive deficits and deficient self regulation, have not been able fully to account for the various aspects of the social dysfunction, suggesting that other mechanisms might underlay this impairment. Our study sought to assess the emotion recognition of Israeli boys at risk of ADHD, and to evaluate its associations with their social skills. A group of 111 boys (grades 4 and 5) were assigned to an At-risk (n=50) and a control (n=61) group based on their scores in an ADH

Personality dimensions measured by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in subjects with social phobia.

The present study investigated personality dimensions by means of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in subjects with social phobia with or without a co-existing avoidant personality disorder. Thirty-one individuals with social phobia were recruited through advertisement and diagnosed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV I and II psychiatric disorders. Comorbid Axis I psychiatric disorders were diagnosed in 29% of the cases. Co-occurring personality disorders were present in 55.8% of the cases, and avoidant personality disorder in 48.4%. The social phobia subjects, as c

[Social skills training groups for children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome: A review].

BACKGROUND: First described in 1944 by Hans Asperger, Asperger syndrome (AS) is now considered in international diagnostic classifications as one of the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) or autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The main symptoms of AS are severe impairment in social interaction and communication, and restricted interests, without significant delay in cognitive and language development. Its prevalence is not clearly established but might be around 0.26 per 1000. Symptoms of high-functioning autism (HFA), which is not an official diagnostic category, are quite similar. Children

Household income modifies the association between social capital and gestational diabetes mellitus in Japan: Results from TMM BirThree Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: While social capital can prevent diabetes, these benefits can be heterogeneous with respect to socioeconomic status. We investigated the association between social capital and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) while examining effect modification by household income. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis using the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study carried out between July 2013 and March 2017. Building a deeper understanding of social relationship health in adolescents with narcolepsy disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Common symptoms for patients with narcolepsy can have a significant impact on social health. As one peak for symptom onset is adolescence, these symptoms impact social relationships during a critical developmental period. Much of the existing literature in this domain has relied on broad questionnaires, with less insight into the nuances of patients' potential social struggles. METHODS: Adolescents (aged 12-17 years) with narcolepsy and their parents individually completed a semistructured interview (n = 14 dyads). Interview transcripts were analyzed using a multistage thema
