Effect of Charge State on the Equilibrium and Kinetic Properties of Mechanically Interlocked [5]Rotaxane: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Rotaxanes can exhibit stimuli-responsive behavior by allowing positional fluctuations of their rota groups in response to physiochemical conditions such as the changes in solution pH. However, ionic strength of the solution also affects the molecular conformation by altering the charge state of the entire molecule, coupling the stimuli-responsiveness of rotaxanes with their conformation. A molecular-scale investigation on a model system can allow the decoupling and identification of various effects and can greatly benefit applications of such molecular switches. By using atomistic molecular dy

Calculation of Canine Dose Rate Conversion Factors for Photons and Electrons.

Urban search and rescue (USAR) dogs are valuable members of their teams and play key roles in performing successful missions. A pair of dogs can do the work of dozens of people, the dogs are able to quickly sniff around collapsed structures and zip through constricted hallways with far greater accuracy than their plodding human counterparts. While in contaminated areas, their human counterparts are afforded the benefit of personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep exposures to chemical, biological and radiological substances to a minimum; USAR dogs, on the other hand, are not. In an effort to

Natural orifice transesophageal mediastinoscopy and thoracoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy are common procedures with painful incisions and prominent scars. A natural orifice transesophageal endoscopic surgical (NOTES) approach could reduce pain, eliminate intercostal neuralgia, provide access to the posterior mediastinal compartment, and improve cosmesis. In addition NOTES esophageal access routes also have the potential to replace conventional thoracoscopic approaches for medial or hilar lesions. METHODS: Five healthy Yorkshire swine underwent nonsurvival natural orifice transesophageal mediastinoscopy and thoracoscopy under general an

Design of rapid medical evacuation system for trauma patients resulting from biological and chemical terrorist attacks.

In the event of a large scale, biological or chemical terrorist attack it is unlikely that local emergency response organizations will have sufficient quantities of dedicated ambulances to evacuate all of the affected victims. As a potential solution to this problem, we have developed a device that can be retrofitted to a variety of government or civilian utility vehicles in order to convert them for emergency medical transport (US Pat. 7,028,351). Each installed device allows the host vehicle to safely transport either a single patient on a stretcher or multiple ambulatory patients. Additiona

Endothelin-1 gene polymorphism in patients with malignant arrhythmias.

The endothelins are peptides with vasoconstricting and growth-promoting properties. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is known with its direct positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on isolated heart and with growth effects. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the frequency distribution of the common polymorphism of the ET-1 gene and its possible relation with hemodynamic consequences of malignant ventricular arrhythmias in patients with structural heart disease. We studied 26 consecutive patients with malignant ventricular arrhythmias and implantable cardioverterdefibrillators with a mean a

Chemogenetic ubiquitin E1 inhibitor TAK-243 CRISPR screen uncovers HAPSTR1/HUWE1 axis in chromatin proteostasis and cell cycle control.

In this study, we sought to comprehensively map ubiquitin signaling networks at the crossroads of cellular proliferation and proteostasis, both crucial in cancer. Genome-wide CRISPR knockout screening in the presence of the ubiquitin E1 inhibitor TAK-243 identified 239 genes whose ablation sensitizes cells to ubiquitination blockade. Follow-up studies reveal a role for the nuclear protein, C16orf72/HECT, UBA, and WWE domain containing E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1 (HUWE1)-Associated Protein modifying Stress Responses (HAPSTR1), in chromatin proteostasis and DNA replication. We show that HAPSTR

Evolution of High-Temperature Oxygen Clusters and Radical Release: A Molecular Dynamics Study in Pure Oxygen and Titanium Tetrachloride Oxidation Environments.

Despite decades of research into high-temperature oxidation kinetics, the atomic-scale origin of oxygen radical formation-a critical driver of the synthesis of functional oxide materials, oxidation corrosion of alloys, and combustion of fuels-remains elusive. Here, we unveil a previously unrecognized "oxygen clustering-radical release" pathway at the molecular level, wherein transient van der Waals aggregates of oxygen molecules, rather than isolated O2, serve as the primary radical source. Through an integrated computational strategy combining first-principles calculations and deep neural net

Conditional Citizenship and the Carceral State: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Structural Violence and Psychosocial Distress Among Queer Youth in Egypt.

Queer youth in Egypt navigate a carceral ecosystem characterized by systematic state surveillance, medical pathologization, and societal exclusion. Despite the severity of these conditions, empirical data on their lived experiences remains scarce. This study addresses this gap through a web-based, cross-sectional quantitative survey (N = 165) designed specifically to bypass Western clinical pathologization. The findings reveal a catastrophic mental health crisis: 70.3% of respondents reported self-harm, and 56.4% reported at least one suicide attempt. A three-step hierarchical multiple regress

Airway Management in the ICU and Emergency Department in Resource-Limited Settings.

Airway management is central to the care of critically ill patients, yet it remains one of the most challenging interventions in emergency departments and intensive care units. Patients often present with severe physiological instability, limited cardiopulmonary reserve, and high acuity, while clinicians often work under constraints related to time for preparation, equipment availability, trained workforce, monitoring, and access to advanced rescue techniques. These challenges are particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries and other resource-limited or austere environments, wh

Combined Effects of Mutation and Ionic Strength on α-Synuclein Reveal Generic Features of Aggregation-Prone Monomeric States.

α-Synuclein (αS) is a highly charged, intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) whose aberrant aggregation is linked to Parkinson's disease (PD). Along with wild-type (WT) αS, five single-point mutants (A30P, E46K, H50Q, G51D, and A53T) are implicated in familial PD. To resolve contradictory experimental observations under varying solution conditions, we investigated how ionic strength modulates the relative aggregation propensity of these six monomeric αS variants using atomistic simulations. Structural and energetic analyses at global, domain, and residue levels revealed that aggregation propen

Additively manufactured reinforced polymeric stents for peripheral artery disease: design, manufacture and performance evaluation.

Stent failure in the peripheral arterial system remains a major clinical challenge due to high mechanical demands caused by limb movement. Unlike coronary arteries, below-the-knee vessels are exposed to continuous flexion, torsion and axial movement, increasing the risk of structural failure, stent collapse, fracture or migration. Due to their tuneable mechanical properties, polymeric stents enabled by advanced additive manufacturing emerge as a potential candidate to overcome the current limitations of metallic stents. This study examines whether polymeric stents made with the ST3DT process a

The convergence paradox: a constructivist account of perceived template convergence and originative agency under generative artificial intelligence.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has raised a widely shared concern that human cognitive and creative output is drifting toward common templates. The terms used to describe this drift, including algorithmic monoculture, outcome homogenization, and the loss of collective diversity, all characterize systems, populations, or model outputs. Psychology has not supplied a matching construct at the level of the individual, that is, a way to describe how a person perceives such convergence and how that perception reshapes agency. This article introduces and analyzes perceived template convergen

Real-time multimodal phenotyping reveals distinct tumour cell dynamics and immune escape mechanisms in T cell therapies.

Adoptive T cell transfer therapy remains limited by the inability to monitor live tumour cell dynamics during treatment. Here we introduce a real-time, label-free phenotyping system that integrates electrical impedance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and microscopy to analyse live tumour cells undergoing therapy. This system enables simultaneous tracking of metabolic activity, membrane integrity and cytoplasmic properties at single-cell resolution. First, analysis of glycolysis reveals that tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes suppress lactate production early, reducing tumour aggressiveness, whil

Continuing Professional Development in the Artificial Intelligence Era.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping clinical work in ways that unsettle the foundational assumptions of continuing professional development (CPD). Existing CPD frameworks-Kirkpatrick, Miller, Moore, and the Five Domains-presume that clinicians are the primary generators of knowledge, the center of agency, and the drivers of performance and outcomes. AI disrupts this logic. Systems that draft clinical reasoning, modulate workflows, and influence decision pathways no longer function as passive tools but as active contributors to clinical judgment. As agency becomes distributed across human

Intra-Relations of Biochemical Profiles Defining the Germination Potential of Medium-Term Cold-Stored Maize (Zea mays L.) Seeds.

Understanding the biochemical networks governing seed longevity is essential for germplasm conservation. Integrating germination potential with biochemical profiling elucidates metabolic transitions during decadal cold storage. As phenotypic evidence of ageing, extended cold storage induces a uniform decline in germination energy, reaching a terminal "floor effect" characterised by the complete exhaustion of repair-and-defence strategies, whilst residual germination capacity averages 21%. Metabolic profiling reveals that prolonged storage causes systemic decoupling of the protein-sugar axis, l

Disruption of RNA metabolism and its impact on protein homeostasis.

Repeat-associated disorders arise from expansions of nucleotide repeats in coding or non-coding regions, producing RNAs that accumulate and disrupt cellular homeostasis through mechanisms collectively termed RNA repeat toxicity. This process complements proteotoxicity in coding-region expansions and is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to pathogenesis. Expanded repeat RNAs form stable secondary structures that sequester RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), such as Muscleblind-like, alter splicing and activate small RNA pathways, broadly impacting gene expression. Myotonic dystrophy type 1

Electronic access to glass transition in supercooled ionic liquids using ambipolar transistor.

Relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids approaching glassy arrest remain a central challenge in integrated electronic architectures, where conventional rheometry becomes incompatible. Here, we demonstrate that an ambipolar PdSe_{2} field-effect transistor functions as an electrical probe capable of resolving ion-specific relaxation dynamics in fragile ionic glass formers and semiquantitatively inferring rheological parameters within an operating device environment. Temperature evolution of the transfer curve hysteresis and time-resolved current transients under ionic-gate pulse reveal a non

Asymmetric coherent clusters with microscopic nonstationarity in network of Stuart-Landau oscillators.

We study the emergence of a unique dynamical state, termed the asymmetric coherent cluster (ACC), in ring networks of identical Stuart-Landau oscillators arising from the interplay of symmetric and asymmetric couplings. The ACC state constitutes an intermediate regime between the splay (SP) and complete synchronization (CS) states, exhibiting macroscopic coherence despite persistent microscopic phase drift of the coupled oscillators. Remarkably, in the ACC state, oscillators self-organize into a stationary, symmetry-broken macroscopic structure while remaining dynamically nonstationary at the

Protective Surface Amorphization Enabling Electrocatalytic Pt Alloy Synthesis.

We present a silica nanoshell confinement strategy that enables a previously unreported surface-specific amorphization process on ultrathin 2D Pt nanodendrites (2D-PtNDs). By treating silica-encapsulated 2D-PtNDs with NaBH4, only the outer atomic layers transform into an amorphous Pt "skin" rich in high-energy, coordinatively unsaturated sites, while the rigid silica shell decouples surface from bulk reactions and prevents structural collapse. The resulting amorphous surface exhibits extraordinary reactivity, spontaneously reducing and incorporating secondary metal ions (Pd, Ag, Au, Ru) via an

Flow-driven lumen remodeling and valve opening in the vas deferens.

Biological ducts must transport fluids while preserving structural integrity, yet how mechano-signaling coordinates wall deformation with luminal flow in vivo remains unclear. Here, we combine intravital two-photon excitation microscopy, light-sheet imaging, and Förster resonance energy transfer-based kinase biosensors to resolve ejaculation-like events in the mouse vas deferens. Acute phenylephrine stimulation elicits a sequence of luminal dynamics: an initial retrograde pressure-redistribution wave followed by a ballistic antegrade flow that propels dense sperm suspensions from the proximal
