STUDY DESIGN: Electronic Web-based survey.
INTRODUCTION: Therapists participating in an international survey selected relative motion extension (RME) as the "most used" approach for the postoperative management of zones V and VI extensor tendon repairs. A subgroup of respondents identified RME as their preferred approach and were asked about their routine RME practices.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to capture data from routine RME users about their practices and compare this with the RME evidence.
METHODS: An English-language survey was distributed to 36 International

The patient was a 40-year-old female who had been treated at our hospital for left peroneal tendonitis due to an ankle sprain 2 years earlier. She re-injured that ankle while dancing. The pain in the lateral left foot soon improved, but she had difficulty standing with the left foot in equinus. Complete peroneus longus and brevis tendon ruptures were diagnosed. The ipsilateral semitendinosus and gracilis tendons were harvested and used to reconstruct the tendons. Three months after surgery, the patient was able to stand in equinus, and at 5 months after surgery she resumed her original level o

This is one of a series of occasional articles highlighting conditions that may be more common than many doctors realise or may be missed at first presentation. The series advisers are Anthony Harnden, professor of primary care, Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford, and Richard Lehman, general practitioner, Banbury. The management of acute Achilles tendon rupture in elite athletes is a current area of clinical controversy. Recent studies have reported near-equivocal outcomes in patients who undergo either nonsurgical or surgical treatment of Achilles tendon rupture; however, similar functional outcomes may not be observed in elite athletes who are at the highest levels of athletic performance and undergo nonsurgical or surgical treatment of Achilles tendon rupture. Surgeons should understand the risks and benefits of nonsurgical and surgical management of acute Achilles tendon rupture. Surgeons also shoul

UNLABELLED: Tibialis anterior tendon rupture is a relatively rare injury, with diverse etiologies, that can cause significant deficits in the functionality of the ankle. These injuries are sometimes diagnosed too late, being in many occasions the alteration in walking the symptom that makes the patient go to the doctor. The six weeks will mark the limit between acute and chronic injury, requiring different therapeutic approaches, along with other parameters such as age, functional demand or concomitant pathologies.
OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of acute rupture, with different etiology, the

The incidence of AT rupture has increased in recent decades. AT ruptures frequently occur in the third or fourth decade of life in sedentary individuals who play sport occasionally. Ruptures also occur in elite athletes. Clinical examination must be followed by imaging. Conservative management and early mobilization can achieve excellent results, but the rerupture rate is not acceptable for the management of young, active, or athletic individuals. Open surgery is the most common option for AT ruptures, but there are risks of superficial skin breakdown and wound problems. These problems can be

Fractures of ossified tibialis anterior tendon have been successfully managed by the excision of the ossified tendon and transfer of the extensor hallucis longus tendon. A 64-year-old man sustained an injury during mountain hiking 2 weeks prior to presentation, falling down on his heels with his ankle fully plantarflexed. Two tender and bony hard masses were palpable along the course of the tibialis anterior tendon, one at the anteromedial aspect of the ankle and another at the dorsum of the talonavicular joint. Radiographs of the ankle demonstrated an approximately 2x1-cm ovoid-shaped bony ma

Peroneal tendon pathology is a common entity but is infrequently reported in the literature. The lesion may be due to partial tears, complete ruptures, subluxation, tenosynovitis, a fractured os peroneum, or damage to the peroneal retinacula. Chronic lateral ankle instability and excessive subtalar and ankle varus rotation may cause damage to the peroneal tendons and their associated structures. This article reviews the pathophysiology, diagnostic imaging, and current surgical techniques for the repair of peroneal tendons.

Lesions of the long head of the bicepstendon (BT) are seen in association with tears of the rotator-cuff, particularly lesions of the subscapularis tendon and the rotator-interval. The frequency of positive MR-findings at the BT is approximately 25%. The pathologic alterations include complete medial luxation, subluxation and entrapment by the subscapularis tendon, tendinitis or tendovaginitis and lesions at the origin of the tendon at the superior labrum (superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP)--lesions). The imaging signs of BT pathology on MR include an abnormal course and position of

This study correlates the excursion of the extrinsic finger extensors in zones V, VI, and VII and the extensor pollicis longus tendon in zones T IV and T V ("T" is used to designate thumb zones) with joint motion. Excursion was estimated by review of the literature, biomechanic calculations, and intraoperative observations. A simple equation determines extrinsic extensor tendon excursion in zone V, VI, and VII. This equation is substantiated by Brand's work on radians and by intraoperative studies. Guidelines are suggested for controlled motion for extrinsic finger extensors and the extensor p

Chronic Achilles tendon rupture is a difficult condition to treat due to tendon retraction and histologic changes. Traditional treatments include primary repair (for defects <2 cm), VY advancement (using gastrocnemius aponeurosis for larger gaps), Achilles tendon turndown (using gastrocnemius fascia, often with flexor hallucis longus transfer), allografts, and tendon transfers (using peroneus brevis or flexor hallucis longus tendons). New synthetic graft options, such as acellular collagen matrices and Artelon, may improve chronic Achilles tendon rupture healing without the morbidity associate

PURPOSE: To evaluate the objective and subjective long-term clinical outcomes of tendon transfer and tendon graft for extensor tendon ruptures in rheumatoid hands.
METHODS: We evaluated the long-term clinical outcomes of tendon transfer and tendon graft for extensor tendon ruptures in rheumatoid hands of 37 patients (43 hands) followed up for a mean of 14 years (range, 10-21 years).
RESULTS: The mean time from rupture to surgery was 13.1 weeks (range, 3-48 weeks). The mean extension lag of the metacarpophalangeal joint was 8.7° (range, 0-40°), the mean pulp-to-palm distance was 0.4 cm (range

OBJECTIVE: To discuss applied anatomy, biomechanics and surgical procedures of long peroneal muscles tendon transposition in repair of occlusive achilles tendon rupture.
METHODS: The blood supply and the morphology of long peroneal muscles tendon were observed in the lower extremity of 50 sides adult specimens and the mechanical tests which stretch load on the tendon were carried out. The methods were designed on the basis of the anatomical characteristics and morphology. Ten patients suffering occlusive Achilles tendon rupture were treated by using long peroneal muscles tendon transposition
