Psychosexual development of children and adolescents with hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is the most common malformation of the penis. Despite the common assumption that hypospadias may affect children's psychosexual development, only a few studies report on the patients' psychosexual adjustment during childhood and adolescence. AIM: A comprehensive, cross-sectional investigation of the psychosexual development of boys operated on for hypospadias in comparison to a healthy control group. METHODS: Sixty-eight children and adolescents (7-17 years) operated on for hypospadias were examined by means of a standardized interview assessing penile self-percepti

[From perception to learning].

In the field of perception, learning is formed by a distributed functional architecture of very specialized cortical areas. For example, capacities of learning in patients with visual deficits - hemianopia or visual agnosia - from cerebral lesions are limited by perceptual abilities. Moreover a visual deficit in link with abnormal perception may be associated with an alteration of representations in long term (semantic) memory. Furthermore, perception and memory traces rely on parallel processing. This has been recently demonstrated for human audition. Activation studies in normal subjects and

Auditory detection and perception in normal man and in patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency: effect of adrenal cortical steroids.

Auditory detection thresholds for sinusoidal tones and various tests of auditory perception were determined in 12 patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency (seven with Addison's disease and five with panhypopituitarism) and compared to those in normal volunteers. In adrenal cortical insufficiency auditory detection sensitivity was significantly more acute than normal, and judgments of loudness and of the contralateral threshold shift were made at levels more than 20 db below those of normal subjects. Thus both the lower and the upper limits of the dynamic auditory range are significantly de

Perception-reality gap profiles in robot-assisted gynecologic surgery: implications for preoperative counseling among Chinese women.

Robot-assisted gynecologic surgery (RAGS) is increasingly used in China, but public understanding of its value relative to conventional laparoscopic surgery (LS) may diverge from clinical evidence. This divergence may affect women's behavioral intention toward RAGS and create challenges for preoperative counseling. This study combined survey data from 546 Chinese adult women with a procedure-specific institutional benchmark derived from 536 radical hysterectomy cases at a tertiary hospital. Perception-reality gap (PRG) were then constructed for six perioperative outcomes, including postoperati

Evidence for pro-cognitive benefits of cannabinoids in people with bipolar disorder.

Cannabis use is highly prevalent among people with bipolar disorder, potentially due to a desire to self-medicate against symptoms, such as racing thoughts and poor concentration. Such symptoms are associated with attention and inhibitory control deficits, functions that are regulated in-part by temporal perception. Temporal perception is impaired in BD and is slowed by acute cannabis exposure. The effects of cannabis use (CU) on temporal perception and its associated cognitive functions in people with BD remains unclear. Here, we conducted two studies to 1) test for associations between chron

Effects of narrative versus non-narrative pictorial warning labels on visual attention and alcohol-related cancer risk perceptions: An eye-tracking study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is a preventable risk factor for cancer, but public awareness remains low. A promising approach to raising awareness is to include pictorial warning labels (PWLs) on alcohol-containing products, but the typical graphic images used in such warnings can cause inattention. This study investigated whether narrative PWLs (depicting the lived experiences) could lead to greater attention and higher risk perceptions than graphic, non-narrative PWLs (showing graphic health effects). METHODS: Moderate and heavy drinkers participated in an online, webcam-based eye-tracking experi

Evaluation of treatment outcomes of zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures using Foley catheter ballooning technique.

INTRODUCTION: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are among the most common midfacial injuries. The conventional management involves open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), which allows precise anatomical reduction but is associated with increased surgical morbidity. To overcome these limitations, minimally invasive techniques have been explored. The Foley catheter ballooning technique has recently been introduced as a novel method for fracture reduction. In addition, n-butyl cyanoacrylate glue has been used as an adjunct for fixation, offering advantages such as ease of applicati

Differences in the temporal processing between identification and categorization of durations: A behavioral and ERP study.

This study examined how different forms of decision-making modulate time perception. Participants performed temporal bisection and generalization tasks, requiring them to either categorize a stimulus duration as more similar to short or long standards (bisection), or identify whether or not a duration was the same as a previously-presented standard (generalization). They responded faster in the bisection task than in the generalization one for long durations. This behavioral effect was accompanied by modulation of event-related potentials (ERPs). More specifically, between 500 ms and 600 ms af…

Reaction time and rhythm of movement in Huntington's disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is characterized by several hyperkinesias though motor slowness is also another cardinal in this disease. In addition, self-paced timing movements are also disturbed in HD, which may also affect several rhythmic voluntary movements such as gait. Motor slowness can be measured with clinical scales such as the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and timed tests, but also with the reaction time (RT) paradigm. We evaluated RT as a measure of motor slowness in 30 patients with genetically confirmed Huntington's disease and 24 control subjects. We also evaluated

Effect of distracter preexposure on the reset of an internal clock.

Interruptions and unfamiliar events (distracters) during a timed signal disrupt (delay) timing in humans and other animals. We hypothesized that repeated exposure to a stimulus may reduce its subsequent time-disrupting properties. To test this hypothesis rats were trained in a reversed peak-interval (RPI) procedure, in which dark timing trials were separated by illuminated inter-trial intervals. Rats were then repeatedly exposed to an auditory stimulus (noise) in either dark (DARK group), or illuminated chambers (LIGHT group); control rats were not exposed to the noise (NOVEL group). Afterward

Spectral loudness summation as a function of duration for hearing-impaired listeners.

Spectral loudness summation was measured for 10- and 1000-ms long bandpass-noise signals with bandwidths in the range of 0.2 to 6.4 kHz centered at 2 kHz for nine listeners with hearing impairment of primarily cochlear origin. Loudness matches between signals with the same duration and different bandwidth were obtained using an adaptive two-interval, two-alternative forced-choice procedure with interleaved tracks. The 3200-Hz wide reference signal had a level of 45 dB or 65 dB SPL. Every signal was individually frequency equalized prior to presentation in order to ensure audibility of all spec

Rise-fall time effects on the brainstem auditory evoked response: mechanisms.

Experiments were conducted to assess the contribution of place mechanisms to the effect of rise--fall time on wave V of the human brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER). Noise bursts of 4- and 10-ms duration were presented at various rise-fall times (0, 1, 2, and 5 ms). Subtractive high-pass masking techniques were used to determine the effect of rise time as a function of derived-band frequency. In general, increasing rise time prolonged wave V latency but did not affect amplitude. Rise-time effects did not depend on derived-band frequency and similar effects were seen in the unmasked cond

Using theory-informed, arts-based research translation to change community attitudes towards people who inject drugs newly released from prison: A randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Community attitudes contribute to social exclusion of people with incarceration and injecting drug use histories. Interventions that positively impact community attitudes can strengthen efforts to reduce recidivism and support positive outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of such interventions on public perceptions towards people who inject drugs newly released from prison. STUDY DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. METHOD: A narrative script on the theme of "exhaustion" was produced from an interview study of post-release experiences. Members of the public partic

Adults' interpretation of invitations using the word 'time'.

The present study examined adults' interpretations of invitations using the word 'time'. Recent research has demonstrated that children may misunderstand these invitations as solely requesting temporal information (Friend et al., 2022). This study tested whether adults perceive the ambiguity in these invitations and whether they understand the source of children's pseudotemporal errors. We examined 401 adult participants' perceptions of invitations using the word 'time', varying the phrasing of the invitation (about the time vs. what happened) and whether the participant had exposure to a chil

A Bioinspired Multifunctional Adhesive-Tactile E-Skin Enabled for Adaptive Grasping and Slip Detection.

Robotic grasping faces a fundamental trade-off between strong adhesion and easy, rapid release, particularly when handling fragile or heavy objects. While thermoresponsive tunable adhesives have been developed to decouple this conflict by enabling tunable adhesion via temperature changes, the lack of real-time tactile feedback limits adaptive control during dynamic manipulation. Inspired by the adhesive-tactile synergy observed in tree frog toe pads, we present a multifunctional electronic skin (e-skin) that integrates a temperature-regulated adhesive layer with a tactile perception layer for
