Multianalyte Detection with Metasurface-Based Midinfrared Microspectrometer.

Midinfrared (2.5-25 μm) spectroscopy is an ideal tool for identifying chemicals in a nondestructive manner. The traditional platform is a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, but this is too bulky, expensive, and power-hungry for many applications. There is therefore a growing demand for small, lightweight, and cost-effective microspectrometers for use in the field. One emerging platform is the filter-array detector-array microspectrometer. It pairs a broadband detector array with a thin and rigid array of spectral filters to offer a robust, compact platform for real-time in situ se

Stewardship of Prehospital Low Titer O-Positive Whole Blood in a Large Urban Fire-Based EMS System.

Introduction: Trauma is the leading cause of death for those aged 1 to 46 years with most fatalities resulting from hemorrhage prior to arrival to hospital. Hemorrhagic shock patients receiving transfusion with 15 minutes experience lower mortality. Prehospital blood transfusion has many legal, fiduciary, and logistical issues. The San Antonio Fire Department participates in a consortium designed to enhance the stewardship of prehospital whole blood. This study aimed to stratify blood usage amongst the field supervisors and special operations units that carry whole blood. Methods: This was a 1

Cellphone-Based Hand-Held Microplate Reader for Point-of-Care Testing of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays.

Standard microplate based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) are widely utilized for various nanomedicine, molecular sensing, and disease screening applications, and this multiwell plate batched analysis dramatically reduces diagnosis costs per patient compared to nonbatched or nonstandard tests. However, their use in resource-limited and field-settings is inhibited by the necessity for relatively large and expensive readout instruments. To mitigate this problem, we created a hand-held and cost-effective cellphone-based colorimetric microplate reader, which uses a 3D-printed opto-mecha

Running tracks abrasion as a source of microplastics pollution: a long jump sandpit case study.

Modern running tracks and football fields are covered with synthetic surfaces made of polyurethane and rubber blends with an admixture of various materials. We collected sand samples from the long jump sandpits of six elementary school and university sports facilities and examined microplastics (MPs) originating from synthetic surfaces. Optical microscopy and FTIR methods were used for identification and quantification of MP particles. The spreading of MP particles was the highest in the university athletic stadium. Total MP content in the examined sand samples is in the range from 3 to 104 pe

Dual-energy computed tomography quantification of creeping fat in Crohn's disease: A new radiologic biomarker for transmural disease monitoring.

Accurate, noninvasive assessment of disease activity remains one of the central challenges in the management of Crohn's disease (CD). The study by Dong et al in World Journal of Radiology represents a meaningful advance in this effort, demonstrating that dual-energy computed tomography with the material decomposition algorithm can reliably quantify intestinal creeping fat (CrF), a pathological hallmark of CD, and that this measurement correlates robustly with clinical, endoscopic, histological, and molecular indicators of disease activity. Notably, CrF volume tracked not only inflammatory burd

Clinical utility of comprehensive genomic profiling tests using MTB management system at a single center in Japan.

Cancer genomic medicine interprets genetic information for diagnosis and treatment. It requires an organized team of experts from various fields to discuss treatment recommendations at a molecular tumor board (MTB). It is also important to track patient outcomes based on these decisions and seamlessly incorporate them into future discussions at the MTB. We developed a system to manage the MTB efficiently. Using this system, we followed the outcome and prognosis of 1643 patients whose treatment was discussed at the MTB and evaluated the utility of a realistic comprehensive genomic profiling (CG

MAcro Plant Projection Imaging (MAPPI): An open, scalable platform for whole-plant fluorescence real-time imaging.

Understanding how plants perceive and respond to environmental and developmental cues requires tools capable of monitoring molecular signals in vivo, across whole tissues, and in real time. Genetically encoded fluorescent indicators, coupled with fluorescence microscopy, have transformed plant biology, but their application remains largely confined to small model organisms and specialized microscopy instrumentation. Here, we present MAcro Plant Projection Imaging (MAPPI), an open-source, low-cost, and modular fluorescence imaging platform for soil-grown plants beyond the model organism or seed

Filling the fellowship gap: A structured program for pharmacy students.

BACKGROUND: Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate train

Clonal Lineage Tracing Reveals Distinct Invasive Subpopulations in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Metastatic dissemination in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) arises from extensive intratumoral heterogeneity, yet the clonal and transcriptional programs that underlie invasive behavior remain poorly defined. The field lacks experimental systems capable of simultaneously tracking the clonal identity and transcriptional state of invasive subpopulations. Here, we apply a clonal lineage-tracing platform coupled with single-cell RNA sequencing to resolve how subpopulations contribute to invasion in a model of TNBC. We demonstrate that invasion is driven by a subset of recurrent clones, indica

The Emergence of Spin-Enhanced Catalysis for CO2 Conversion.

Spin catalysis provides a new opportunity to overcome conventional performance limits in carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion by exploiting spin-dependent charge transfer and radical reaction pathways. A clear understanding of spin effects and effective strategies for spin regulation is therefore essential for advancing CO2 conversion catalysis. This review briefly summarizes recent advances in the underlying mechanisms and a few representative examples of spin-enhanced CO2 conversion, highlighting their importance in steering CO2 conversion toward high value-added products. It begins with an intro

The oral-lung axis in lung cancer: microbial translocation, immune reprogramming, and clinical implications.

The oral-lung axis describes microbial and inflammatory exchange between the oral cavity and the lower respiratory tract. Its relevance to lung cancer is supported by the detection of oral-associated taxa in lower-airway samples, epidemiological links between periodontal disease and lung cancer risk, and experimental evidence that microbial signals can modify epithelial proliferation and antitumor immunity. This review integrates epidemiological, ecological, mechanistic, and translational evidence while distinguishing oral-associated or source-linked observations from pulmonary and intratumora

Internet of Things Node with Real-Time LoRa GEO Satellite Connectivity for Agrifood Chain Tracking in Remote Areas.

This work presents an Internet of Things (IoT) node designed for low-power agrifood chain tracking in remote areas, where long-range terrestrial communication is either unavailable or severely limited. The novelty of this study lies in the development and characterization of an IoT node prototype that leverages direct-to-satellite connectivity through a geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite, using long-range frequency-hopping spread spectrum (LR-FHSS) modulation in the licensed S-band. The prototype integrates a microcontroller unit that manages both the radio modem and a suite of sensors,

Oblique line scan illumination enables expansive, accurate and sensitive single-protein measurements in solution and in living cells.

An ideal tool for the study of cellular biology would enable the measure of molecular activity nondestructively within living cells. Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques, such as single-molecule tracking (SMT), enable in situ measurements in cells but have historically been limited by a necessary tradeoff between spatiotemporal resolution and throughput. Here we address these limitations using oblique line scan (OLS), a robust single-objective light-sheet-based illumination and detection modality that achieves nanoscale spatial resolution and sub-millisecond temporal resol

CEHD: A Unified Framework for Detection and Height Estimation of Fresh Corn Ears in Field Conditions.

Real-time detection of fresh corn ear height can provide a basis for dynamic adjustment of harvester header parameters, reducing mechanical damage and improving harvest quality. This study proposes a corn ear height detection model (CEHD). A YOLO-HAMDF network is developed for ear recognition, in which the core modules-TBDA, GLSA, and AQE-respectively suppress background interference, enhance contextual perception, and optimize bounding-box scoring. Depth information is incorporated to filter non-target regions and improve system robustness. In addition, a DI-DeepSORT module is designed for ea

Visual motion thresholds mapped to midget and parasol ganglion cell topography in the human retina.

Motion in visual images can be described in terms of changes in phases of Fourier components (phase cues), or displacements in the position of specific features (position cues) over time. Human observers are able to perceive motion using both cues, where perceived direction of motion is biased in favour of phase cues at higher spatial and temporal frequencies, and in favour of position cues at lower spatial and temporal frequencies. This suggests the existence of separable mechanisms for processing phase and position cues. We propose that these mechanisms receive separate inputs from the paras

A brief history of circadian time in the heart.

This review tracks the discovery of circadian biology in cardiovascular science, starting with early clinical observations of daily changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiovascular events. These patterns suggested that time of day matters, but it was not until the past two decades that the mechanisms and knowledge translation of these rhythms were uncovered. We describe the heart's intrinsic circadian properties and importantly how this leads to regulation of cardiac gene and protein expression, neuroendocrine and vascular rhythms, metabolism, cellular electrophysiology, and cell sign

Interplay of electrokinetic effects in nonpolar solvents for electronic paper displays.

HYPOTHESIS: Electronic paper displays rely on electrokinetic effects in nonpolar solvents to drive the displacement of colloidal particles within a fluidic cell. While Electrophoresis (EP) is a well-established and frequently employed phenomenon, electro-osmosis (EO), which drives fluid flow along charged solid surfaces, has not been studied as extensively. We hypothesize that by exploiting the interplay between these effects, an enhanced particle transport can be achieved. EXPERIMENTS: In this study, we experimentally investigate the combined effects of EP and EO for colloidal particles in n

Enhanced VCA Storage: A Pilot Study Demonstrating Supercooling in Orthotopic Rodent Hindlimb Transplantation.

The field of vascularized composite allograft (VCA) transplantation has seen steady, rapid growth, with new innovations driving the evolution from experimental procedures to more standardized therapies. With this expansion comes challenges with graft allocation, preservation, and postoperative graft rejection. Here, we outline the first example of subzero nonfreezing (SZNF), supercooled storage of a whole rat hindlimb with orthotopic transplantation. Rat hindlimbs were procured, loaded, and supercooled for 48 hours at -4°C (n = 4), after which, they were recovered. The loading and recovery pha
