INTRODUCTION: The existing literature is limited and inconclusive regarding management of spinal tuberculosis with neurological deficit during advanced pregnancy. None of the previously published case series concerning this problem during the second trimester of pregnancy have explored the option of simultaneous surgical intervention for it along with maintenance of pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old woman with 26 weeks of pregnancy (2nd trimester) presented with upper back pain for the past 2 months, inability to move both lower limbs for the last 1 week, bladder and bowel dysfunction for

Tuberculosis (TB) is quite prevalent in developing countries, with an ever-rising incidence of extrapulmonary cases. TB of bones and joints is quite challenging to diagnose. Most spinal TB lesions localize at the thoracic and lumbar levels; cervical lesions are a rarity. Hence, most neck pains are labelled cervical spondylosis as the symptomatology of cervical spine tuberculosis (CTB) remains unclear. A 38-year-old male had long-standing neck pain for six months, not associated with any focal neurological deficit, nausea, vomiting, or blurred vision. After the initial evaluation by local pract

BACKGROUND: Rapid transportation of neurosurgical patients, particularly those with acute spinal trauma, is critical due to the direct association between total prehospital time and mortality. While existing aeromedical guidelines focus primarily on helicopter (rotor-wing) transport, there is limited evidence consolidating the effects of fixed-wing aircraft transport, which exposes patients to unique physiological stressors due to higher operational altitudes.
METHODS: Using a recognised framework for scoping reviews, a European-based research team conducted biweekly discussions to ensure a c

Spinal tuberculosis (TB) or Pott's spine is the commonest extrapulmonary manifestation of TB. It spreads through hematogenous route. Clinically, it presents with constitutional symptoms, back pain, tenderness, paraplegia or paraparesis, and kyphotic or scoliotic deformities. Pott's spine accounts for 2% of all cases of TB, 15% of extrapulmonary, and 50% of skeletal TB. The paradiscal, central, anterior subligamentous, and neural arch are the common vertebral lesions. Thoracic vertebrae are commonly affected followed by lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Plain radiographs are usually the initial in

Spondylodiscitis, though rare, is a serious condition that can lead to disability or death. It may be caused by pyogenic, granulomatous (e.g., tuberculosis, brucellosis, fungal), or rarely, parasitic infections. Pain and neurological deficits typically result from bone destruction, deformity, and mass effect. Various microbiological agents have been identified in the literature, with more frequent spinal infections caused by pyogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, as well as by less common agents, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and fungi, such as Candida albicans. Between Febru

Infectious spondylitis, an infection of the vertebral body, intervertebral disc, or paraspinal tissues, poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This review examines the clinical approach and management of infectious spondylitis in Korea. The incidence of pyogenic spondylitis has increased, primarily due to the aging population, more frequent use of invasive procedures, and higher prevalence of immunocompromising conditions. Conversely, tuberculous spondylitis has declined, reflecting shifts in population demographics and medical practices. Staphylococcus aureus remains the predominant cau

Tuberculous spondylitis of the augmented vertebral column following percutaneous vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty has rarely been described. We report an unusual case of tuberculous spondylitis diagnosed after percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP). A 61-year-old woman presented to our institution complaining of back pain following a fall 7 days before. Radiologic studies revealed an acute osteoporotic compression L1 fracture. The patient denied history of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and there were no signs of infection. The patient was discharged from hospital 4 days after undergoing L1 PKP with a drama

INTRODUCTION: Infections account for 3% of all non-traumatic spinal cord injuries. The demographic distribution and clinical course are still not fully understood in these patients.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the clinical-epidemiological characteristics and clinical course in patients with infectious spinal cord injury referred to our centre.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study (over the period 1997-2003) was carried out. Variables examined included age, sex, type of injury, aetiology, causing agent, ASIA classification on admission and discharge.
RESULTS: N = 27 (

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB) is a calamitous infection with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Underlying HIV infection often increases susceptibility for acquiring TB and also complicates TB treatment. The study objectives were to assess the burden of CNS TB and associated factors in treatment experienced HIV infected adults.
METHODS: A single-center observational cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2019 and June 2020. Both descriptive and analytical statistics were used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: Ninety-five HIV infected adults with pre

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of multi-mode neuroelectrophysiological monitoring (MIOM) in evaluating spinal cord and nerve root function in the treatment of thoracic tuberculosis via costal transverse process approach.
METHODS: From December 2017 to September 2019, a retrospective study of thoracic tuberculosis patients in our hospital was conducted. This study included 25 patients (14 men and 11 women). The average age of patients at the time of surgery was 63.3 years (range, 20-83 years). All patients (three cases with the destruction of a single vertebral body, 13 cases with the destruc

We report a rare case of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome in which the differential diagnosis included tuberculous spondylitis and the patient ultimately required reconstructive spinal surgery. The patient was a 60-year-old woman who presented with severe low-back and leg pain after treatment for tuberculosis. Roentgenography and magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed destructive changes suggestive of tuberculous spondylitis. [(18)F]-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed uptake in the cervical spines,

Posterior lumbosacral fusion using bone graft without internal fixation requires long immobilization and has high rate of pseudoarthrosis. To overcome such limitation technique of spinal internal fixation has been developed and applied in past twenty years. Since 1982, the authors have done lumbosacral fusion with internal fixation and bone graft by using Harrington alar hook (32 cases), luque ring (26 cases), Galveston technique (7 cases), Steffee plate (10 cases), Dick pedicle screw (1 cases), RF instrumentation (3 cases) and CD technique (4 cases). Totally 83 cases have been treated, which

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disorder characterized histologically by noncaseating granulomas in affected organs. Cutaneous manifestations of the disease such as papules, nodules, plaques, and ulcerations occur in approximately 25% of the patients. Sarcoidosis can present with multiple different morphologies including annular, psoriasiform, ichthyosiform, morpheaform, and verrucous. In this study, we report a 30-year-old African American man with a history of spinal tuberculosis as a child and slowly enlarging verrucous nodules that appeared at the age of 5 years. After an extensive

Although backpain during childhood is uncommon serious diseases feature high on the list of differential diseases. Often the correct diagnosis in the young is made late or missed in the first instance. During the adolescent period the incidence of backpain rises to include mechanical or osteochondritic conditions and the early problems of a degenerative back such as disc protrusion. It has to be stressed that infection and neoplasma although rare can be a cause of backache at any age. If after thorough investigation no abnormalities has been detected, one should keep in mind that serious menta
