[Chronic hepatitis B in rheumatic diseases: issues of screening and reactivation of infection: A review].

Patients with rheumatic diseases infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) are difficult to manage not only due to the presence of risk factors for the development and rapid progression of liver cirrhosis, but also due to the likelihood of reactivation of this infection. Despite the successes achieved in the fight against HBV, the virus cannot be completely defeated due to the presence of hidden forms of the disease, escaping the field of vision of a rheumatologist and an infectionist. Based on the results of the analysis of current publications, the paper presents the rationale for a complete imm

Mutational analysis of the OA1 gene in ocular albinism.

Ocular albinism type 1 (OA1) is an X-linked disorder, mainly characterized by a severe reduction in visual acuity, foveal hypoplasia, nystagmus, hypopigmentation of the retina, the presence of macromelanosomes in the skin and eyes, and the misrouting of optic pathways, resulting in the loss of stereoscopic vision. We screened the OA1 gene for mutations in three unrelated Canadian and French families and in two isolated patients with OA1. We found three different missense mutations and two different nonsense mutations, three of which were novel. To date, 41 mutations (including missense mutatio

The early treatment for ROP (ETROP) randomized trial: study results and nursing care adaptations.

The Early Treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ETROP) study, funded by the National Eye Institute, has shown that early treatment of high-risk prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) improves retinal and visual outcomes at 9 months corrected age. These favorable study results have yielded new guidelines for treatment of infants with ROP This paper reviews the study methodology and results and outlines the neonatal and ophthalmic nursing interventions influenced by this new treatment schedule. Four critical phases, screening/examination, treatment, evaluation, and follow-up, are iden

Contribution of Total Screen/Online-Course Time to Asthenopia in Children During COVID-19 Pandemic via Influencing Psychological Stress.

Objectives: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) self-quarantine period, the transition to online-course has profoundly changed the learning modes of millions of school-aged children and put them at an increased risk of asthenopia. Therefore, we aimed to determine associations of the total screen/online-course time with asthenopia prevalence among that children during the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether the associations were mediated by psychological stress. Methods: Asthenopia was defined according to a validated computer vision syndrome questionnaire (CVS-Q). We used CVS-Q to collec

Correction of refractive errors in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) involved in visual research.

Macaques are the most common animal model for studies in vision research, and due to their high value as research subjects, often continue to participate in studies well into old age. As is true in humans, visual acuity in macaques is susceptible to refractive errors. Here we report a case study in which an aged macaque demonstrated clear impairment in visual acuity according to performance on a demanding behavioral task. Refraction demonstrated bilateral myopia that significantly affected behavioral and visual tasks. Using corrective lenses, we were able to restore visual acuity. After correc

Marfan Syndrome Prediction Via Graph Neural Networks on 3D Facial Cues.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder whose early detection is critical to prevent life-threatening cardiovascular complications. To support the diagnostic process, which currently relies on complex and costly clinical assessments and genetic testing, we propose a 3D vision-based method for rapid, non-invasive screening for MFS using facial scans. The method analyzes 3D facial morphology using Graph Neural Networks on either manually or automatically extracted landmarks, leveraging geometric relationships to capture subtle craniofacial patterns and a statistically

Genomic exploration of pediatric neurological disorders: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric neurological disorders include neurodegenerative diseases causing cognitive impairment and vision loss. They are one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in children with diverse etiologies. Diagnosis is difficult despite genetic work, and a final diagnosis can be achieved in only 60% of cases. CASE PRESENTATION: We explore three Indian cases of pediatric neurological diseases (with age presented at the clinic), viz. arthrogryposis (8 years), autism (18 months), and congenital bilateral cataract (3 years), by analyzing clinical exomes. In this work, we atte

Phenotyping and genotyping FEVR: Molecular genetics, clinical and imaging features, and therapeutics.

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a genetically complex retinal vascular disorder, often manifesting in infancy or early childhood, and characterized by peripheral retinal avascularity, neovascularization, and retinal detachment. The disease, predominantly inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, is associated with mutations in genes such as LRP5, FZD4, and TSPAN12, which disrupt the Wnt/β-catenin and Norrin signaling pathways, critical for retinal vascular development. FEVR's clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic cases to severe vision loss, making early diagnosis and inte

Sebaceous carcinoma presenting as chronic chalazion.

We present a case of sebaceous carcinoma presenting as treatment-resistant chalazion. Diagnosis was made by excisional biopsy after failed treatment with warm compresses, eyelid hygiene and erythromycin ointment. Conjunctival map biopsies excluded local spread. MRI of the orbits and whole-body positron emission tomography demonstrated no metastatic disease. Definitive treatment was accomplished by wide local excision with no recurrence at 1-year follow-up. Sebaceous carcinoma often masquerades as benign diagnoses, such as blepharitis and chalazion, yet it is an aggressive cancer with high rate

Uveitis Associated with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common cause of uveitis in children. While symptoms are usually mild, persistent eye inflammation could lead to severe complications and impaired vision. It is essential that JIA patients at risk are diagnosed with uveitis early, receive adequate treatment, and avoid developing complications, such as cataract, glaucoma, and amblyopia. The purpose of this mini-review is to summarize the screening strategies and clinical management for JIA-associated uveitis (JIA-U) as well as the current state of molecular markers linked to this condition. Because
