Scottish Blackface ewes from cobalt-deficient farmland were fed a diet containing 0.06 mg cobalt per kg dry matter from approximately 30 days before embryo recovery/transfer until lambing. Ewes remained untreated (-Co; n = 82) or were given an intraruminal cobalt-containing bolus to compensate for the dietary deficit (+Co; n = 82). Ewes used as embryo donors (-Co, n = 17; +Co, n = 16) were artificially inseminated with semen from a single Suffolk sire. Day 6 embryos obtained from -Co and +Co donors were transferred in singleton to -Co and +Co recipients in a 2 x 2 factorial-designed experiment

The most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency in older people is malabsorption of food-bound vitamin B12. Thus, it is suggested that the recommended daily allowance of 2.4 microg/d be met primarily with crystalline vitamin B12, which is believed to be well absorbed in individuals who have food-bound malabsorption. There is concern that high intakes of folic acid from fortified food and dietary supplements might mask the macrocytic anemia of vitamin B12 deficiency, thereby eliminating an important diagnostic sign. One recent study indicates that high serum folate levels during vitamin B12 def

In the presence of a chronically insufficient vitamin supply which was verified by repeated measurements of the vitamin parameters, many unfavorable psychometric findings in the corresponding deficiency groups are observed for the vitamins C, thiamin, riboflavin, cobalamin and folate, depending on the degree of the insufficient vitamin supply. Vitamin supplementation in cases of initially insufficient vitamin supply indicate some effects in the sense of an improvement of behavior and cognitive functions. Supplemental vitamin intake in physiological dosages in addition to a vitamin-sufficient d

BACKGROUND: Lebanon experienced a severe economic crisis, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Beirut port explosion in August 2020. This crisis pushed over half of the population into poverty resulting in widespread food insecurity. The latter often leads to inadequate intake of essential micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and folate. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the influence of the economic crisis on the prevalence of these micronutrient deficiencies.
METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted at Al Zahraa Hospital University Medical Center in Beirut, inves

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency are common in the older and are associated with several conditions including anaemia, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and cancer. Evidence from in vitro studies suggests that solar radiation can degrade both vitamins in the skin. Chile is the longest country in the world running perfectly North-South making it an ideal place to study potential associations of latitude and solar radiation on vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to examine the association between vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencie

We performed studies in 25 patients with low serum cobalamin levels who had few if any clinical or hematologic findings of cobalamin deficiency. All but three had morphologically normoblastic hematopoiesis, and 15 were not even anemic. None of those tested excreted methylmalonic acid or homocystine. Nevertheless, the dUST identified metabolic abnormalities in 18 of the 25 cases. In vitro additives were essential in the dUST. Especially noteworthy was MTHF, whose addition unmasked an otherwise undetectable dUST abnormality in four cases. Why MTHF appears to act as a "stress test" in this settin

Methyl donor (MD: folate, vitamin B12 and choline) deficiency causes hyperhomocysteinemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanisms of the association between MD deficiency, hyperhomocysteinemia, and cardiomyopathy remain unclear. Therefore, we performed a proteomic analysis of myocardium of pups from rat dams fed a MD-depleted diet to understand the impact of MD deficiency on heart at the protein level. Two-dimension gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry-based analyses allowed us to identify 39 proteins with significantly altered abundance in MD-deficient myocard

We report on the case of an infant who was hospitalized because of failure to thrive, megaloblastic anemia, and delayed psychomotor development. He was 10 months old and had been exclusively breast-fed by his vegan mother. Investigations showed vitamin B(12) deficiency with hematocytopenia and pervasive developmental disorders as well as vitamin K and vitamin D deficiencies. The infant's mother presented the same deficiencies. Introduction of vitamin supplementation normalized the biological disorders, and the infant showed weight gain and neurological improvement. This case highlights that a

While vitamin B(12) deficiency is global, data in elderly Indians are lacking. The problem in India is likely to be higher because of vegetarianism and malabsorption related to gastro-intestinal parasites. Autonomic dysfunction is known to occur much earlier in pernicious anemia. However, what is not known is whether these changes are reflected in healthy elderly individuals. This study assessed cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic activity using heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy elderly individuals of low and high vitamin B(12) status and evaluated the effect of vitamin B(12) supplem

Anemia should not be accepted as an inevitable consequence of aging. A cause is found in approximately 80 percent of elderly patients. The most common causes of anemia in the elderly are chronic disease and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding and myelodysplastic syndrome are among other causes of anemia in the elderly. Serum ferritin is the most useful test to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia of chronic disease. Not all cases of vitamin B12 deficiency can be identified by low serum levels. The serum methylmalonic acid level may

INTRODUCTION: Globally, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common metabolic disorder affecting millions of people annually. Metformin, a prevalent prescribed antihyperglycemic medication for T2DM, has been associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in T2DM patients receiving metformin.
METHODS: This retrospective record review study was based on T2DM patients receiving metformin at a single tertiary healthcare center. The prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency is defined as a serum level <145 pmol/L. Statistical analysis asse

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Vitamin B-12 plays a critical role in nerve protection and regeneration. However, clinical evidence regarding the effectiveness and optimal dose of vitamin B-12 supplementation for managing DPN in individuals with low serum vitamin B-12 levels remains inconclusive.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of 2 different daily doses of oral vitamin B-12 supplementation on neuropathic

BACKGROUND: Weight loss may cause nutrient deficiencies that hinder further weight loss. This study aimed to assess serum ferritin, folate, and vitamin B12 levels and examine their roles in weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS).
METHODS: In 135 obese patients, serum ferritin, folate, and vitamin B12 levels were measured from baseline to 12 months post-BS. Weight loss was measured by percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) and excess weight loss (%EWL) using linear regression.
RESULTS: The median %TWL and %EWL were 30.66 (26.63-35.30) and 88.44 (76.12-108.17), respectively. Ferritin, folate

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute-onset polyneuropathy. Several biomarkers have been identified to monitor prognosis in GBS, including serum folate, serum albumin, blood glucose, serum sodium, and plasma cortisol levels.
OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of serum vitamin B12 deficiency and increased creatine kinase (CK-NAC) levels in GBS patients and ascertain if the levels of serum CK-NAC and vitamin B12 can serve as prognostic indicators in GBS patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research recruited 50 patients with GBS from the neurology department of a tertiary care
