A model of transient laryngeal hemiplegia in dogs through conduction blockade of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

OBJECTIVE: To create a model of transient unilateral laryngeal paralysis (LP) that will allow the study of cricoarytenoideus dorsalis dysfunction and a method for quantification of varying degrees of LP in dogs. ANIMALS: 5 castrated male research Beagles. PROCEDURES: Between January and February 2018, dogs were anesthetized and instrumented with a laryngeal mask airway and a flexible endoscope to record the rima glottidis. The left or right recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLn) was localized using ultrasonography and electrical stimulation, then conduction blockade was induced with perineural lido

Effect of Fascia Implantation and Controlled Release of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor for Muscle Atrophy in Rat Laryngeal Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: To improve lateral thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle atrophy after laryngeal paralysis, reconstruction of the vascular network of the atrophied muscle is necessary. We therefore evaluated whether the controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) with autologous fascia implantation could affect vascular reconstruction in the lateral TA muscle. STUDY DESIGN: Animal experiment. SETTING: Laboratory. METHODS: Unilateral laryngeal paralysis was induced in 20 rats. The rats were implanted with autologous fascia and a gelatin hydrogel sheet with or without 1 µg of bFGF (fascia and

Dynamics of Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscle Contraction.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal function requires neuromuscular activation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILMs). Rapid activation of the ILMs occurs in cough, laughter, and voice-unvoiced-voiced segments in speech and singing. Abnormal activation is observed in hyperfunctional disorders such as vocal tremor and dystonia. In this study, we evaluate the dynamics of ILM contraction. STUDY/DESIGN: Basic science study in an in vivo canine model. METHODS: The following ILMs were stimulated: thyroarytenoid (TA), lateral cricoarytenoid/interarytenoid (LCA/IA), cricothyroid (CT), all laryngeal adductors (

The effect of temperature on basal tension and thyroarytenoid muscle contraction in an isolated rat glottis model.

The pitch of voice is closely related to the vocal fold tension, which is the end result of coordinated movement of the intralaryngeal muscles, and especially the thyroarytenoid muscle. It is known that vocal quality may be affected by surrounding temperature; however, the effect of temperature on vocal fold tension is mostly unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on isolated rat glottis and thyroarytenoid muscle contraction induced by electrical field stimulation. In vitro isometric tension of the glottis ring from 30 Sprague-Dawley rats was continuousl

Differences in the microstructure and biomechanical properties of the recurrent laryngeal nerve as a function of age and location.

Idiopathic onset of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVP) is caused by damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and results in difficulty speaking, breathing, and swallowing. This damage may occur in this nerve as it loops around the aortic arch, which is in a dynamic biomechanical environment. The goal of this study is to determine if the location-dependent biomechanical and microstructural properties of the RLN are different in piglets versus adolescent pigs. The neck/distal and thoracic/proximal (near the aortic arch) regions of the RLN from eight adolescent pigs and six piglets were i

Restraining mechanisms in regulating glottal closure during phonation.

Recent experimental studies showed that isotropic vocal fold models were often blown wide apart and thus not able to maintain adductory position, resulting in voice production with noticeable breathy quality. This study showed that the capability of the vocal fold to resist deformation against airflow and maintain adductory position can be improved by stiffening the body-layer stiffness or increasing the anterior-posterior tension of the vocal folds, which presumably can be achieved through the contraction of the thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricothyroid (CT) muscles, respectively. Experiments in b

Comparison of unilateral arytenoid lateralization and ventral ventriculocordectomy for the treatment of experimentally induced laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

This study evaluated changes in respiratory function in dogs with experimentally induced laryngeal paralysis treated with either unilateral arytenoid lateralization or ventral ventriculocordectomy, and compared the effectiveness of these procedures. Evaluation consisted of clinical assessment and tidal breathing flow volume loop and upper airway resistance measurements. Carbon dioxide and doxapram hydrochloride were used as respiratory stimulants. Initially, all dogs improved clinically after corrective surgery. However, by the end of the study, laryngeal collapse had developed in 2 of 5 dogs

[Laryngeal reinnervation by nerve-muscle multipedicle transfer].

Abductive ability was restored by means of a modified nerve-muscle pedicle technique, utilizing nerve-muscle multipedicle and multipoint implantation in seventeen dogs. The results showed that the procedure was superior to traditional Tucker's technique in functional recovery, electrophysiological activity and muscle strength which was also demonstrated by histochemical studies. There was little difference between double and three nerve-muscle pedicle transfer. The procedure has been used in three patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Return of spontaneous abduction in the operated sid

Cricoarytenoid joint mobility after chronic vocal cord paralysis.

Eleven whole organ laryngeal specimens (10 human and 1 dog) with a history of long-standing (6 months to 17 years) paralysis were studied histopathologically for changes in the cricoarytenoid (CA) joints and the intrinsic laryngeal musculature. In 9 cases the paralysis was unilateral and in 2 bilateral. No evidence of CA joint ankylosis (fibrous/osseous obliteration of joint space or degeneration of articular surfaces) was seen in the specimens. The absence of CA joint ankylosis permits the efficacy of thyroplasty medialization procedures.

Regulation of phonatory efficiency by vocal fold tension and glottic width in the excised canine larynx.

An excised canine larynx was used to assess the effects of glottic width and vocal fold tension on acoustic power, aerodynamic power, and vocal efficiency. Multiple regression analysis of the data obtained from 10 larynges revealed that with increased vocal fold tension there is a logarithmic decline in radiated acoustic power, while aerodynamic power remains constant (p less than .05). Vocal efficiency has a similar logarithmic decrease with increased tension (p less than .05). With narrowing of the glottis, the acoustic power increases more than the aerodynamic power delivered to the larynx,

The effect of air flow and medial adductory compression on vocal efficiency and glottal vibration.

This study used an in vivo canine model to investigate the effects of varying vocal fold resistance by electrically stimulating the recurrent laryngeal nerve while monitoring medial adductory compression of the vocal folds, glottal airflow, and vocal intensity. The effects of increasing airflow on glottal vibration were also examined stroboscopically and by measurement of open quotient. The results indicated that increasing intensity by medial adductory compression was more efficient than by increasing airflow. Increasing airflow produced a significantly greater open quotient and vocal fold vi

Excitation thresholds for nerves reinnervating the paralyzed canine larynx.

Electrical stimulation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles implanted with nerve-muscle pedicles (NMP) has resulted in documented return of motion. No study, however, has yet determined how NMP excitability correlates with that of normal muscle or nerve. In six anesthetized dogs, one hemilarynx was denervated and the paralyzed thyroarytenoid, cricothyroid, and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles were reinnervated via NMPs originating from the ansa hypoglossi nerve. After 4.6 to 5.7 months, an electric stimulator delivering biphasic pulses of variable amplitude and widths was used to test thresholds for

Laryngeal paralysis on receptor and reflex responses to negative pressure in the upper airway.

Mechanoreceptors affected by changes in transmural pressure and/or contraction of intrinsic muscles are present in the larynx. This study is designed to test the hypothesis that laryngeal paralysis alters laryngeal mechanoreceptor and reflex responses to collapsing pressure. Experiments were carried out on anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs. The activity of 65 mechanoreceptors was recorded from the superior laryngeal nerve during upper airway occlusion before and during laryngeal paralysis induced by cold block of both recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLN). Esophageal and upper airway press

Experimental laryngeal reinnervation by phrenic nerve implantation into the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle.

Under general anaesthesia, 5 dogs underwent sectioning of the right recurrent nerve followed by implantation of the phrenic nerve into the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. Some 6-7 months later the dogs were sacrificed after registration of vocal cord motility. Still photographs and movie film of the larynx were taken during quiet and forced respiration and at electrical stimulation of the implanted phrenic nerve. The PCA and vocal muscles were removed for histochemical studies. We found practically no abductory movement of the vocal cord on the reinnervated side, either during quiet or

Superior laryngeal nerve stimulation effects on respiratory movements of the vocal cords.

An animal model was designed to reproduce conflicting effects of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) irritation and hypoventilation found in a clinical situation produced by an upper airway foreign body. The effects of continuous stimulation of the SLN on changes in glottic pressure were studied under conditions of a) normoxia and normokapnia , b) hypoxia and hyperkapnia , and c) normoxia and hyperkapnia . Recorded fluctuations of glottic pressure were found to correspond closely to activity of the muscles of respiration. Condition of combined hypoxia and hyperkapnia seemed to protect animals f

Open-source real-time passive acoustic tracking of beaked whales for low-power devices.

Real-time tracking of multiple underwater sound sources remains a challenge in passive acoustics, particularly for low-power autonomous systems. Many existing tracking methods rely on post-processing or computationally intensive techniques, limiting their applicability to embedded devices. To overcome these limitations, we present a time-difference-of-arrival-based tracking algorithm that tracks multiple sources in the direction-of-arrival (DOA) domain. A key architectural feature of the method is the decoupling of continuous per-frame DOA estimation from source enumeration, enabling these pro

Estimating the number of vocal bullfrogs using a single passive acoustic sensor.

American bullfrogs pose a significant threat to local biodiversity in regions where they are non-native, as they spread diseases and prey on smaller species. Therefore, being able to monitor their population changes in local habitats is important for effective policymaking and conservation efforts. This study investigates the use of a single passive acoustic sensor, AudioMoth, to estimate the number of vocal bullfrogs in natural habitats. Several noise removal methods are applied to the spectrograms of audio recordings, after which spectral features of bullfrog calls are extracted and analyzed
