Maternal and paternal psychosocial risk factors for clinical depression in a Norwegian community sample of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Parental characteristics can increase the risk of the development of adolescent depression. In this study, we focus on the parental factors of parents in a non-intact relationship, dissatisfaction with personal economy, physical illness or disability, and internalizing and externalizing problems. The aim is to examine which of these parental risk factors, separately for mothers and fathers, are associated with clinical depression in adolescents in a community sample. METHODS: In the Youth and Mental Health study, 345 adolescents (mean age ± standard deviation 15.0 ± 0.6 years, ran

Comparison of a theory-based (AIDS Risk Reduction Model) cognitive behavioral intervention versus enhanced counseling for abused ethnic minority adolescent women on infection with sexually transmitted infection: results of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic minority adolescent women with a history of sexual or physical abuse and sexually transmitted infections represent a vulnerable population at risk for HIV. Community-based interventions for behavior modification and subsequent risk reduction have not been effective among these women. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of a theory-based (AIDS Risk Reduction Model) cognitive behavioral intervention model versus enhanced counseling for abused ethnic minority adolescent women on infection with sexually transmitted infection at 6 and 12 months follow-up. DESIGN: Controlled ran

Developmental alcohol exposure: Impacts on medial prefrontal cortex morphology and the excitatory-inhibitory balance.

Alcohol is one of the most commonly used substances during pregnancy and adolescence, two of the most vulnerable periods of cognitive development. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a cortical region of the frontal lobe involved in various complex executive functions that are affected by alcohol exposure. Specifically, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a subregion of the PFC, performs critical roles in cognitive processing, such as conditioned fear, reward-seeking, impulse control, working memory, and pain. The mPFC begins developing in utero and continues to mature into adulthood. Thus, it is

Immediate and delayed anxiety- and depression-like profiles in the adolescent Wistar-Kyoto rat model of endogenous depression following postweaning social isolation.

In order to understand links that exist between inherited risk or predisposition, brain and behavioural development, endocrine regulation and social/environmental stimuli, animal models are crucial. The Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat has been shown to have validity as a model of adult and adolescent depression. While sex- and age-specific differences in some of the face, predictive and construct validities of the model such as depression-like behaviours have been established, anhedonia and anxiety using other induced anxiety paradigms such as elevated plus maze remain equivocal. First, post-weaning so

Longitudinal measures of monkey brain structure and activity through adolescence predict cognitive maturation.

In humans and other primates, adolescence is associated with improvement in cognitive abilities and with changes in brain structure and connectivity. However, how these changes affect neural activity underlying cognitive performance remains unknown. Here we conducted a multilevel, longitudinal study of monkey adolescent neurocognitive development by tracking behavior, neuronal activity and anatomical imaging measures. The trajectory of prefrontal neural activity accounted well for working memory improvements. Complex aspects of activity changed progressively during adolescence, but even simple

Genetic and environmental risk factors for adolescent-onset substance use disorders.

Substance dependence disorders are chronic relapsing disorders with immense societal consequences. Twin and family studies have found that there are critical genetic and environmental components in the inheritance of substance use disorders, and modern advances in genetics are making it possible to identify specific variants that may predispose an individual to these disorders. Adolescence is a crucial period for initiation, experimentation, and the establishment of more regular patterns of use of alcohol and other drugs. Adolescent substance use is a known risk factor for the development of l

Individual and contextual influences on adolescent smoking.

Cigarette smoking among adolescents remains one of the most important public health challenges. Despite much attention to research on the etiology of smoking, notably the examination of factors that differentiate adolescent smokers from never smokers, much less is known about factors that predict the development of dependence once an adolescent tries smoking. This paper reviews individual and contextual influences on the progression of smoking among adolescents. Highlights include a consideration of multiple levels of influence, from intra-individual factors, such as genetics, demographics, te

Positive and negative affect in depression: influence of sex and puberty.

To examine adolescent depression as a model for unusual emotion regulation, the current study considered the influence of gender, pubertal development, and cortisol on self-reported mood. Children and adolescents with major depressive disorder (n = 35, mean age 12.5 years) were compared with psychiatrically healthy children and adolescents (n = 36, mean age 10.5 years). During a three-day assessment, participants rated their mood at three time points, pubertal development was determined through physical examination, and plasma cortisol was sampled during the second night. Depressed participant

Differential Impact of Adolescent or Adult Stress on Behavior and Cortical Parvalbumin Interneurons and Perineuronal Nets in Male and Female Mice.

BACKGROUND: Stress has become a common public health concern, contributing to the rising prevalence of psychiatric disorders. Understanding the impact of stress considering critical variables, such as age, sex, and individual differences, is of the utmost importance for developing effective intervention strategies. METHODS: Stress effects (daily footshocks for 10 days) during adolescence (postnatal day [PND] 31-40) and adulthood (PND 65-74) were investigated on behavioral outcomes and parvalbumin (PV)-expressing GABAergic interneurons and their associated perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the prefr

Nicotine and fluoxetine alter adolescent dopamine-mediated behaviors via 5-HT1A receptor activation.

INTRODUCTION: Abuse or misuse of tobacco, e-cigarettes, or antidepressants may have serious clinical consequences during adolescence, a sensitive period during brain development when the distinct neurobiology of adolescent serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) systems create unique behavioral vulnerabilities to drugs of abuse. METHODS: Using a pharmacological approach, we modeled the behavioral and neurochemical effects of subchronic (4-day) nicotine (60µg/kg, i.v.) or fluoxetine (1mg/kg, i.v.) exposure in adolescent and adult male rats. RESULTS: Nicotine and fluoxetine significantly enhance qu

From peers to partners: The peer-context origins of adolescent heterosexual romance.

Romantic partnerships are highly influential for adolescent development, but many questions remain as to how and with whom such relationships emerge. By adopting a dynamic social network perspective, this study furthers our understanding of the peer-related precursors to heterosexual adolescent romance. Multivariate statistical network models are applied to unique longitudinal data on 1919 Dutch adolescents' (Mage = 14.9, SDage = 1.6; 52% girls, 12% non-Western migration background) romantic relationships and other social ties (e.g., friendships, popularity nominations, "crushes"). Results ind…

The antioxidant N-acetylcysteine prevents cortical neuropathological phenotypes caused by adolescent Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol exposure in male rats.

Clinical and pre-clinical evidence demonstrates that adolescent Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, increases the risk of developing neuropsychiatric symptoms in later life. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) serves as a pathophysiological nexus point underlying many cannabis-related pathophysiological outcomes. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying these risk factors are poorly understood. THC increases oxidative stress, which is a well-established causal factor for increased neuropsychiatric risk, including schizophrenia. N-ac

A novel exploration of irritability in adolescent males: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability is a key symptom of mood disorders and is common in adolescence; nevertheless, it is poorly understood and assessed. Research examining irritability and its relationship to mood and anxiety disorders risk factors in adolescent males is lacking. Therefore, the current study aimed to address this gap. METHOD: An online survey designed to interrogate the relationship between irritability and other risk factor variables was administered to 627 adolescent males (ages 12-17). Findings were analysed statistically using MANOVAs. RESULTS: When divided into high and low irritab

Psychosocial predictors and consequences of drug use: a developmental perspective within a prospective study.

In this review of my prospective research program, I focus on several topics related to psychosocial factors associated with drug involvement across several developmental periods of life. In particular, I address the first three decades of life. To illustrate these processes, I use selected findings from my 16-year prospective study of adolescent and adult development that examine drug use, other problem behaviors, and psychosocial risk and protective factors as both antecedents and outcomes of drug involvement. Specifically, I: (1) summarize risk and protective factors along a developmental c
