BACKGROUND: Electroencephalography (EEG) screening of pilot candidates has long been established but remains controversial. The EEG records of 0-15% of the test population demonstrate the presence of brief periods of slow waves (theta, 4-7.9 Hz and delta, 0-3.9 Hz). The significance of these EEG findings for pilot selection has not been defined.
HYPOTHESIS: We investigated whether the existence of slow waves in the EEG records of cadet pilots was related to differences in their cognitive performance. If so, the EEG could serve as a tool for cognitive assessment in candidate pilot screening. T

BACKGROUND: This paper presents an investigation of auditory evoked responses in humans subjected to high altitude hypoxic conditions.
METHODS: Middle latency (MLAEPs) as well as short latency (BAEPs) evoked potentials were recorded in 10 healthy subjects, first at sea level (N), then 24 h (H1) and 72 h (H3) after their arrival at an altitude of 4350 m. At the same time, arterial blood parameters (PaO2, PaCO2 and pH) were measured and the clinical status of the subjects was assessed.
RESULTS: In altitude conditions, the amplitude of BAEP peak V decreased (-17%). The MLAEP waves showed variat

INTRODUCTION: The literature contains a paucity of information on female tolerance to high sustained acceleration. With women now flying high-performance aircraft, gender-specific factors that may affect female acceleration tolerance have become increasingly important. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how menstrual state and physical condition affect acceleration tolerance. We hypothesized the menstrual cycle would have no effect on acceleration tolerance and that a positive correlation would exist between physical fitness level and tolerance to high sustained acceleration.

PURPOSE: The present study investigated the effects of differential spatial frequencies of a vertically striped, horizontally rotating drum on the observer's frequency of eye nystagmus, perceived velocity of self-motion, and symptoms of motion sickness.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, each of 10 subjects viewed 1 min of an optokinetic rotating drum at the speed of 10 rpm covered with 6, 12, 24, 48, and 96 pairs of black and white stripes, presented in counterbalanced order. The results indicated that subjects perceived significantly stronger circular vect

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft.
HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should decrease towards the higher frequencies.
METHODS: Some 12 subjects were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at four different frequencies 0.35, 0.50, 0.70, and 1.00 Hz, at 1-week intervals, latin square order. Subjects were seated in the upright position; motion was through the head-body X-axis. Motion was stopped (motion endpoint) at moderate nausea or after 30 min.
RESULTS: The proportion of subjects experiencing moder

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is commonly thought to arise from a sensory conflict. However, few quantitative methods based on this theory are available to detect MS susceptibility.
HYPOTHESIS: It was asked whether the standardized unusual stimulation of a single sensory channel under quantified dynamic balance conditions in man could elicit a sensory conflict and therefore trigger motion sickness (MS) METHODS: Vestibular and visual channels were stimulated by galvanic current and rotating prismatic glasses, respectively. The moving platform used to create the requirements for dynamic bala

BACKGROUND: The most common pharmacological agents for alleviating symptoms of motion sickness in the U.S. are over-the-counter antihistamines. Two example are dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and cyclizine (Marezine).
HYPOTHESIS: Dramamine and Marezine suppress overall motion sickness symptoms with equal effectiveness, but Dramamine affects the central nervous system (CNS), while Marezine affects the stomach directly.
METHODS: This study employed a double-blind, within-subject design to compare the effectiveness of Marezine (50 mg) and Dramamine (50 mg), in preventing subjective symptoms and gast

We have developed an anesthetized microswine model of hypoxemic hypothermia and rewarming for testing prophylaxes and treatments. The respiratory stimulant almitrine bismesylate (ALM) was considered as a potential field expedient therapy for hypoxemic hypothermia. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that five consecutive 100 micrograms.kg-1 ALM intravenous (i.v.) doses given to normothermic microswine 3-4 min apart increased minute ventilation from an average of 3.4 L.min-1 to 4.5 L.min-1 (n = 2). However, when either a single i.v. ALM dose of 150 micrograms.kg-1 (n = 1) or three consecutive

BACKGROUND: The application of a Topical Skin Protectant (TSP) under chemical protective clothing may impair heat exchange and/or decrease tolerance time during exercise.
HYPOTHESIS: The extent to which TSP might act as a barrier to heat transfer was unknown. Since TSP may be permeable to water vapor, we hypothesized that there would be no significant differences between treatments on variables effecting heat exchange.
METHODS: There were 10 subjects who walked (3.5 mph, 3% grade) until volitional exhaustion in an environmental chamber (TA = 36.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C; TDP = 27.0 +/- 1.0 degrees

This study was designed to describe the physiological, psychophysical, and psychological responses of firefighters to firefighting drills in a training structure containing live fires. Fifteen male firefighters, wearing standard turnout gear which resulted in full encapsulation, performed two firefighting tasks (advancing fire hose, chopping wood) while inside the training structure. Measurements of heart rate, tympanic membrane temperature, blood lactate, perceptions of respiration, mood, perceived exertion, and thermal sensation were obtained after 8 min of advancing fire hose, and again aft

METHOD: The daily changes in respiratory function were monitored in 16 healthy male road inductees at sea level (SL) and at high altitudes (HA) of 3110 m, 3445 m, and 4177 m. Identical studies were also carried out on acclimatized low landers (ALL) staying at 3110 m and at 4177 m for 2 years.
RESULTS: Ventilation, tidal volume, and respiratory rate showed significant increases on arrival at HA and remained high during the entire period of observation (p < 0.001). These parameters did not show any appreciable difference between 3110 m and 3445 m. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expirato

BACKGROUND: Hypercapnia, which may be encountered during diving operations or by patients under general anesthesia with spontaneous respiration, alters the basic thermoregulatory responses of animals and humans. In cold-exposed animals, 3-10% inspired CO2 impairs thermal homeostasis by attenuating shivering and promoting heat loss through peripheral vasodilation. Experimental results with humans are equivocal.
PURPOSE: To determine the effects of hypercapnia on warm and cold thermoregulatory responses and core cooling rates during mild cold stress, we examined the core temperature (TCO) thres
