Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found in hard plastics and the coatings of food and drinks cans which can behave in a similar way to estrogen and other hormones in the human body. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of the treatment with oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol olive leaves rich extracts in reducing functional perturbations and oxidative stress arising from BPA treatment in livers and kidneys of lactating mother rats and their pups'. For this, four groups of lactating mothers were used: controls (group A), treated with bisphenol A (group B), treated with bisphenol A and oleurop

Prenatal exposure to gonadal hormones plays a major role in the normal development of the male and female brain and sexually dimorphic behaviors. Hormone-dependent differences in brain structure and function suggest that exposure to exogenous endocrine disrupting chemicals may be associated with sex-specific alterations in behavior. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental chemical that has been shown to alter estrogen, androgen, and thyroid hormone signaling pathways. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest associations between prenatal exposure to BPA and child behavior, however data a

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical that is used in a variety of consumer products, and exposure to BPA is widespread among the general population. Recent studies have suggested that BPA may affect the thyroid and related pathways. However, human studies are still limited. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between BPA exposure and thyroid function. We obtained survey data and blood samples from The Thai National Health Examination Survey IV 2009, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey using a multistage, stratified sampling of the Thai population. A total of 2,340

There are concerns about the combined estrogenic effects of chemicals since mixtures of these chemicals exist in our environment. This study investigated potential additional interactions between bisphenol A (BPA) and isobutylparaben (IBP), which are major xenoestrogens used in the manufacture of plastics, cosmetics, drugs, and other products. The combined effects of these two chemicals were analyzed by measuring the expression of calbindin-D(9k) (CaBP-9k) in rat pituitary cancer GH3 cells. GH3 cells were treated with single and combination doses of both chemicals (BPA single doses: 10(-7), 10

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a 'weak' endocrine disruptor. The effect of BPA on human reproduction is controversial but has been related to meiotic anomalies, recurrent spontaneous abortion, abnormal karyotypes, the diminishing of oocyte survival, delay in meiotic progression and an elevated rate of MLH1 foci in vitro. The aim of this study is to characterize the gene expression of human fetal oocytes in culture as well as to evaluate the effect of BPA in cultured human oocytes. To accomplish our objective, 12 ovaries from 6 euploid fetuses were used. The ovarian fetal tissue was cultivated in two gro

Evidence from experimental studies suggests that fetal exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) has adverse reproductive effects in both males and females. Studies from our laboratory suggest that exposure to the developing female fetus produces a unique, multigenerational effect. Specifically, maternal exposure affects the earliest stages of oogenesis in the developing fetal ovary, and the resulting subtle meiotic defects increase the likelihood that embryos produced by the exposed female in adulthood (i.e., the grandchildren) will be chromosomally abnormal. Several studies have demonstrated that bisphenol A (BPA) exhibited weak estrogenic activity in the 3-day uterotrophic assay using ovariectomized (OVX) and immature rats (Toxicol. Lett. 115 (2000) 231; Regul. Toxicol. Pharmacol. 32 (2000) 118; J. Toxicol. Sci. 26 (2001) 111) and BPA also possessed anti-androgenic activity in in vitro yeast based assays (J. Endocrinol. 158 (1998) 327). To investigate anti-androgenic effects of BPA. a rodent Hershberger assay was carried out using immature Sprague-Dawley male rats. An androgen agonist, testosterone (0.4 mg/kg per day), was administered for 7 cons

Incidence and prevalence of owerweight and obesity have greatly increased over the past three decades in almost all countries around the world. This phenomenon is not easily explained by lifestyle changes in populations with very different initial habits. This has led to consider the influence of other factors, the so-called endocrine disruptors, and more specifically obesogens. This study reviewed the available evidence about polluting chemical substances which may potentially be obesogens in humans: DES, genistein, bisphenol A, organotins (TBT, TPT), and phthalates. The first three groups of

Obesity and endocrine disruptors (EDs) promote endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, a mechanism associated with cardiovascular diseases. Among EDs, BPS is widely used in consumer products. Whether BPS promotes cardiac ER stress, either alone or combined with a high-fat diet, remains unclear. Male C57BL/6 mice were assigned to a standard chow diet (SC-15 kJ/g), SC+BPS (SCB), high-fat diet (HF-21 kJ/g), or HF+BPS (HFB), receiving BPS (25 μg/kg/day) through their drinking water for 12 weeks. Maternal exposure to bisphenols (BPs) during pregnancy may negatively impact birth outcomes. However, research on the interaction between anemia and exposure in relation to preterm birth (PTB) is limited. A prospective birth cohort was used to assess the relationship between prenatal exposure to BPs and PTB, and to explore potential effect modification by maternal anemia. The maternal urine samples were collected during each trimester to measure BPs concentrations. The associations between individual BPs and PTB were assessed using generalized linear model (GLM). Generalized estimating equatio

Diabetes type I is associated with bone loss and increased bone adiposity. Osteoblasts and adipocytes are both derived from mesenchymal stem cells located in the bone marrow, therefore we hypothesized that if we could block adipocyte differentiation we might prevent bone loss in diabetic mice. Control and insulin-deficient diabetic BALB/c mice were chronically treated with a peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) antagonist, bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether (BADGE), to block adipocyte differentiation. Effects on bone density, adiposity, and gene expression were measured. BAD

Enhanced de novo lipogenesis (DNL) is a hallmark of metastatic breast cancer (BC). Environmental exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenols (such as BPA), is strongly linked to altered lipid metabolism and BC. However, the linkage between EDC-mediated DNL and metastatic transformation in BC remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that long-term exposure to BPA stimulates DNL in both estrogen-sensitive (MCF-7) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells (MDA-MB-231) by activating PPARγ/ACC/FAS-driven lipogenic signaling. Moreover, this signalling regulate

Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic compound widely used in plastic manufacturing, has been shown to cause testicular damage and disrupt spermatogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of astaxanthin (AST) against BPA-induced testicular injury. Four experimental groups of Wistar Albino rats were established (n=8 per group): Control, Sham, BPA, and BPA+AST. At the conclusion of the study, serum samples were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) [OSI=TOS/TAC], and CRP. Histopathological evaluations inc

Environmental endocrine disruptors, such as bisphenol A (BPA), pose significant threats to male reproductive health. Cordycepin, a bioactive nucleoside derived from Cordyceps militaris, has demonstrated antioxidant and bioregulatory effects; however, its protective role against BPA-induced reproductive toxicity remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the protective role of cordycepin in male mice exposed to BPA through physiological, histological, metabolomic, microbiota-related, and molecular analyses. BPA exposure markedly decreased the average serum testosterone level (-5

Numerous studies have shown that endocrine-disrupting chemicals are one of the important pathogenic factors in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Our previous study has revealed that bisphenol A (BPA) can cause steroid hormone imbalance, polycystic ovary, and estrus cycle disorder. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of BPA, a typical environmental estrogen, on the synthesis of steroid hormones in human ovarian granulosa KGN cells. Exposure of KGN cells to BPA (0.5, 5, 50, and 500 μg/L) resulted in the decrease of progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), and the ratio of estradiol to tes

Hormonally active agents are released into the environment from industrial and manufacturing activity. Evidence in the literature indicates that impaired reproductive capacity in wildlife and laboratory species is associated with chemical exposures. In particular, bisphenol A (BPA) and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) have generated public interest due to their presence in several consumer products. In this study, we determined that expression of steroid hormone receptors (estrogen and androgen receptors), Wnt4, and β-catenin was greater (p < 0.05) in the rat epididymis at 35 days of age com

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are ubiquitous non-persistent endocrine disrupting chemicals whose relation with infant birth size is not clearly understood.
METHODS: We examined associations between maternal and paternal preconception urinary concentrations of total BPA and 14 phthalate metabolites and birth size for 233 infants. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate parental quartiles of BPA and phthalates in relation to birth weight, length, head circumference, and ponderal index with separate models run for each parent adjusting for age, smoking, body mass i
