Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is common because it is present in 1 of 100 newborns. Failure to diagnose DDH and treat in infancy can result in significant long-term disability. Early diagnosis can be accomplished through a quick but careful physical examination of all newborns. 3865 consecutive newborns delivered between 2/1/91 and 7/31/93 were prospectively studied. All the neonates received a physical examination during the first 24 hours of life. Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) are the most common cancer among young men in the United States and Western Europe. Prior evidence suggests that TGCT may arise in perinatal life, although few risk factors have yet been identified. A prospective study was carried out in the Maternity Hospital, Kuala Lumpur over a 2-year period. During this time, 52,379 deliveries took place. 36 neonates (0.7 per 1000 births) were found to have congenital dislocation of the hips (CDH) by both the Ortolani and Barlow's manoeuvre. CDH was most common in the females (female to male ratio was 2.3:1), the first borns (50% of the affected cases) and babies who had breech delivery (10.7 per 1000 births). The results of 1000 consecutive unselected cases of induction of labor for medical or obstetric reasons using prostaglandin E2 suppositories are presented. The overall rate of failed induction resulting in a cesarean section in those patients with an unfavorable cervix has fallen from 42 to 2.5%.
