Wrist and hand overuse syndromes.

Overuse syndromes in the wrist or hand can occur from repetitive use of the wrist and hand or from recurrent direct trauma to the hand area. Tendinitis syndromes due to overstretching or shear stress are seen commonly on both the extensor and flexor sides of the wrist. Overuse syndromes also can take the form of neurovascular syndromes, resulting in compression syndromes of the median, ulnar, and superficial branch of the radial nerve in the wrist area and trauma to the ulnar and digital vessels supplying the hand. Treatment in most cases involves rest with splinting, icing, and NSAIDs in acut

Adhesive capsulitis of shoulder and treatment with protease inhibitors in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection: report of 8 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients receiving protease inhibitor therapy who presented with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. METHODS: Between July 1996 and December 1999, 8 HIV-infected patients (7 male) treated with protease inhibitors who presented with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder were retrospectively identified. Diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis relied on clinical features including shoulder pain and both active and passive restricted range of motion (ROM). All available clinical and radiographic data were reviewed. RE

Mathematical modelling and simulation of a tennis racket.

By constructing a mathematical model, we consider the dynamics of a tennis racket hit by a ball. Using this model, known experimental results can be simulated on the computer, and it becomes possible to make a parametric study of a racket. Such a simulation is essential in the study of two important problems related to tennis: computation of the resulting forces and moments transferred to the hand should assist understanding of the medical problem 'tennis elbow'; secondly, simulation will enable a study to be made of the relationships between the impact time, tension in the strings, forces tra

Association between hypertension and frozen shoulder: A bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have suggested a potential association between hypertension and frozen shoulder. This study aims to elucidate the causal dynamics of this relationship using a bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization approach. We analyzed data on hypertension (N = 484,598) and frozen shoulder (N = 627,998) from the IEU Open genome-wide association study database. Instrumental variables were carefully selected to ensure robust correlation and minimize linkage disequilibrium. The primary analysis was conducted using the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method. Additional analyses, incl

Association of Cervical Disease and Metabolic Comorbidities with Adhesive Capsulitis in Patients with Shoulder Pain: A Multivariate Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adhesive capsulitis (AC) is estimated to be 2-5% in the general population. However, the etiology of AC remains unclear. Among the various proposed factors, the precise role of cervical disease, and the severity of cervical degeneration, in the development of AC has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of cervical disease to AC in patients with shoulder pain. METHODS: A total of 409 patients who visited the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for shoulder pain were retrospectively reviewed. The outcome variable was the presenc

Superficial swellings in sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus): Clinical and ultrasonographic findings.

This study describes the clinical presentation of superficial swellings and evaluates the utility of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of such swellings in sheep and goats. Ninety-three sheep and 73 goats were included in this study on the basis of presence of superficial swellings on the head (n=56), neck (n=16), chest wall (n=3), abdominal wall (n=40), umbilicus (n=14), scrotum (n=16), testes (n=1), udder (n=7), limbs (n=2), gluteal region (n=5), tail (n=1), and penile urethra (n=5). Ultrasonographic evaluation of these superficial swellings allowed the diagnosis of abscesses (n=54; 32.52%),

Prevalence of hypothyroidism in patients with frozen shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism and frozen shoulder (FS) have been associated, although this relationship remains uncertain. The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypothyroidism in patients with FS. METHODS: A case-control study was performed to compare FS patients (cases) with patients who visited an orthopedic service for other clinical conditions (controls). FS was diagnosed according to specific criteria based on anamnesis, physical examination, and shoulder radiographs. A specific questionnaire was applied, and measurements of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (T

Posterior elbow problems in the overhead athlete.

The overhead athlete is defined as an athlete who uses his/her hand in an overhead position. The motion in the overhead athlete is a highly skilled movement performed at extremely high velocity, which requires flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, synchronicity, and neuromuscular control of the whole body. In this overview, we will discuss the most common pathologies seen at the posterior side of the elbow such as posteromedial impingement, proximal ulnar stress fractures, and triceps pathology. Specific nonsurgical and operative treatment guidelines for the overhead athlete's elbow ar

Frozen shoulder and the Big Five personality traits.

BACKGROUND: In the past, several studies have suggested the existence of a "periarthritic personality" in patients with frozen shoulder. We conducted a study to determine differences in personality traits in patients with primary and secondary frozen shoulders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 118 patients (84 women and 34 men; mean age, 53.8 years; SD 7.56) with a frozen shoulder. Of these patients, 48 had an idiopathic frozen shoulder and 70 had a secondary frozen shoulder. Personality traits were determined by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) scale. This questionnai

Adhesive capsulitis of the hip: a case report: an entity in question.

Very little has been discussed in the medical literature concerning adhesive capsulitis of the hip (ACH). There are no articles to date in the physical therapy literature regarding ACH and only a dozen or so in medical journals. Evidence suggests ACH may present in a similar progression through four stages as adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder (ACS) (from synovial inflammation to capsular fibrosis). Consensus does not exist for management of ACS or ACH. However, most clinicians agree that treatment should be guided by the stage of the disorder, whether medically, surgically, or through physic
