Globally invasive, withdrawing at home: Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus facing the rise of Aedes flavopictus.

It has been suggested that climate change may have facilitated the global expansion of invasive disease vectors, since several species have expanded their range as temperatures have warmed. Here, we present results from observations on two major global invasive mosquito vectors (Diptera: Culicidae), Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Aedes japonicus (Theobald), across the altitudinal range of Mt. Konpira, Nagasaki, Japan, a location within their native range, where Aedes flavopictus Yamada, formerly a rare species, has now become dominant. Spatial abundance patterns of the three species suggest that

SO2 photoexcitation mechanism links mass-independent sulfur isotopic fractionation in cryospheric sulfate to climate impacting volcanism.

Natural climate variation, such as that caused by volcanoes, is the basis for identifying anthropogenic climate change. However, knowledge of the history of volcanic activity is inadequate, particularly concerning the explosivity of specific events. Some material is deposited in ice cores, but the concentration of glacial sulfate does not distinguish between tropospheric and stratospheric eruptions. Stable sulfur isotope abundances contain additional information, and recent studies show a correlation between volcanic plumes that reach the stratosphere and mass-independent anomalies in sulfur i

Refined analysis for the effects of ambient wind on sprint based on the local meteorological data.

Environmental factors play a pivotal role in determining sprinter performance, with ambient wind being particularly influential. This study provides a detailed analysis of the effects of ambient wind on sprinting, using the National Stadium of China (NSC) as a case study and incorporating local meteorological wind data. Wind speed and direction data were obtained from the Beijing Meteorological Tower (BMT) for the period 2013 to 2017, enabling an analysis of local wind climate characteristics and the wind field. A local wind field model was developed and simulated in a wind tunnel, and wind en

Design of active sites for amine-functionalized direct air capture materials using integrated high-throughput calculations and machine learning.

Direct air capture (DAC) of carbon dioxide is a critical technology for mitigating climate change, but current materials face limitations in efficiency and scalability. We discover novel active sites for DAC materials using a combined machine learning (ML) and high-throughput atomistic modeling approach. Our ML model accurately predicts high-quality, density functional theory-computed CO2 binding enthalpies for a wide range of nitrogen-bearing moieties. Leveraging this model, we rapidly screen over 1.6 million binding sites from a comprehensive database of theoretically feasible molecules to i

AI models uncover factors influencing scorpionism in Northern Brazil.

Envenomation by scorpion stings is a serious public health problem in tropical regions of the world. In Brazil's Northern region, there has been a significant increase in cases over the last decade, accompanied by a rise in the fatality rate. Climate change and intensive land use are altering the distribution of species that pose health risks and may be associated with the increased incidence of accidents. We integrated species distribution models (SDMs) of three medically important species (Tityus obscurus, T. metuendus, and T. silvestris), bioclimatic data, and land use to predict scorpionis

Factors Associated With the Emergence and Spread of Visceral Leishmaniasis in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), once considered a rural disease in Brazil, has progressively urbanised, particularly in the state of São Paulo (SSP), where the first urban cases emerged after the detection of the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in 1997. METHODS: This study explores the environmental, climatic, socioeconomic, and infrastructural factors associated with the expansion and establishment of VL in urban areas of SSP. For the statistical analysis, two types of models were developed. First, for all municipalities (with or without VL), the logistic regression model was used. S

Refinement and predicting formaldehyde concentrations of indoor fabric: Effects of temperature and humidity.

Indoor air pollution resulting from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a significant health concern, especially formaldehyde. Therefore, predicting indoor formaldehyde concentration is essential for environmental control. In this research, the authors develop a thermal and wet coupling calculation model of porous fabric that considers the influence of different phases of wet components and the coupling effect of heat and humidity on formaldehyde migration. We propose a modified calculation method of the formaldehyde mass transfer characteristic parameters of fabric to obtain the diffusion co

Forecasting zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis using meteorological factors in eastern Fars province, Iran: a SARIMA analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To predict the occurrence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) and evaluate the effect of climatic variables on disease incidence in the east of Fars province, Iran using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model. METHODS: The Box-Jenkins approach was applied to fit the SARIMA model for ZCL incidence from 2004 to 2015. Then the model was used to predict the number of ZCL cases for the year 2016. Finally, we assessed the relation of meteorological variables (rainfall, rainy days, temperature, hours of sunshine and relative humidity) with ZCL incidenc

Hydrology and density feedbacks control the ecology of intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis across habitats in seasonal climates.

We report about field and theoretical studies on the ecology of the aquatic snails (Bulinus spp. and Biomphalaria pfeifferi) that serve as obligate intermediate hosts in the complex life cycle of the parasites causing human schistosomiasis. Snail abundance fosters disease transmission, and thus the dynamics of snail populations are critically important for schistosomiasis modeling and control. Here, we single out hydrological drivers and density dependence (or lack of it) of ecological growth rates of local snail populations by contrasting novel ecological and environmental data with various m

Optimising Connectivity in Deep-Sea MPA Networks for Nephrops norvegicus Recovery in NW Mediterranean Sea.

Marine Protected Areas are essential tools for enhancing population persistence and supporting fisheries through larval dispersal. In the NW Mediterranean, where the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (Linnaeus, 1758) is both ecologically and economically important, we assessed the larval connectivity of the existing network of Fishery No-Take Zones using a 12-year Lagrangian simulation informed by species-specific habitat models. Results showed that the current MPA network protects only a small fraction of larval settlement, with connectivity being weak and highly variable across years. Two o

Downscaling GRACE storage change to analyze groundwater dynamics and drought evaluation in the Ganga Basin.

Groundwater over-exploitation, coupled with accelerated climate change, has led to a declining water table and multiple droughts over the Ganga basin. Monitoring this with in situ observations and modeling is limited due to inadequate data. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) helped to overcome this limitation, but its coarse spatial resolution undermined the local abstractions. In this study, we employed monthly climatology-based regression models to downscale GRACE-change in terrestrial water storage (∆TWS) from its native resolution to a 0.25° × 0.25° grid. The random forest

Agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize-based systems: a review.

Aflatoxin contamination of maize remains a global food safety and public health challenge, particularly because it is a dietary staple food and feed ingredient produced across diverse agroecological zones. Although numerous mitigation strategies have been developed, contamination levels remain variable. This reflects complex interactions among climate, soil properties, crop management practices, plant physiological stress and rhizosphere microbial communities. This review synthesizes evidence on key agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize, highlighting climate variability, s

MOCA-Net: A Model for Automatic Segmentation of Retrogressive Thaw Slumps from Sentinel-2 Imagery Along the Qinghai-Tibet Engineering Corridor.

Retrogressive thaw slumps (RTSs) serve as key indicators of global climate change and also pose significant risks to critical infrastructure along the Qinghai-Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC). Accurate automatic segmentation of RTSs using Sentinel-2 imagery is of great value for climate change research and risk assessment, owing to the dataset's ready availability and extensive spatiotemporal coverage. However, this segmentation task remains challenging due to the complex morphology and variable sizes of RTSs, as well as their low contrast and fuzzy boundaries against the surrounding landscap

Somalia's lifeline: Digitalization and AI.

Somalia's fragile health system, strained by decades of conflict, climate shocks, and persistently low immunization coverage, remains dangerously vulnerable to preventable disease outbreaks. With measles resurgent and full vaccination coverage stagnating at just 55% nationally and as low as 26% in some states - the country faces recurrent epidemics it cannot withstand. Digitalization and artificial intelligence offer a critical lifeline, with potential to transform disease surveillance, optimize resource allocation, rebuild primary healthcare delivery, and empower frontline health workers thro

From population to individual: advocating personalised digital tools for heat-health early warning in a changing climate.

Escalating heat extremes under climate change are imposing substantial health burdens, with 2023 and 2024 consecutively breaking global temperature records. Mounting evidence suggests that heatwaves elevate the risks of hospitalisation and mortality across multiple disease categories, including ischaemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute kidney injury. Nonetheless, most existing heat-health warning systems remain primarily reliant on population-level predictions, and considering individual differences and disease-specific considerations when defining warni

Flooding, Sociospatial Risk, and Population Health.

Climate change and population settlement patterns are altering the severity and spatial dimensions of flooding. Despite associational evidence linking flood exposure to population health in the United States, few studies have used counterfactual strategies to address confounding or examined how sociospatial determinations of risk, such as floodplain delineation, affect well-being. Using the case of Hurricane Harvey, I leverage novel, repeated cross-sectional health survey data from Houston immediately predisaster (N = 2,540) and six to nine months postdisaster (N = 2,798), linked to local floo

Meta-analysis of heat-induced changes in cardiac function from over 400 laboratory-based heat exposure studies.

Heat waves are associated with increased fatalities from adverse cardiovascular events attributed to the negative effects of heat on cardiac function. However, scientific understanding of acute cardiac adjustments to heat has come primarily from laboratory experiments employing insulated and encapsulated heating modalities, most commonly water-perfused suits. We evaluated whether findings from those studies reflect cardiac responses during more natural exposures to hot ambient conditions simulated in climate-controlled chambers by synthesizing the findings from over 400 laboratory-based heat e

Impact of Climate and Hydrological Variability on Drinking Water Production and Trihalomethane Levels: A Case Study in Barcelona, Spain (2010-2024).

Surface water-based utilities increasingly face challenges in drinking water production during prolonged droughts and heavy rainfall events. We assessed the impact of climate and hydrological variability on trihalomethane (THM) levels in two drinking water treatment plants in Barcelona: one river-based (Llobregat plant) and one reservoir-based (Ter plant). We examined data from 15 years (2010-2024) using generalized additive models (GAMs) to evaluate the change (β) in chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, bromoform, and total THMs (THM4), by extreme (≤percentile 10, ≥percenti

Changing World: Vectors, Climate and Society.

A critical review of the impact of climate change on vector-borne diseases (VBDs) was carried out. The systems Chagas-Triatominae as hemimetabolous insect and leishmaniasis-Phlebotominae as holometabolous with terrestrial larval stages were taken as examples and both were considered for their diversity of vector species, reservoirs and socio-environmental settings of transmission. Results from the literature were discussed in relation to: a) the multiplicity of causes, targets and consequences from the perspective of multilevel eco-epidemiology; b) assumptions of linearity of predictive models

Global Circulation Dynamics and Its Determinants of Dengue Virus: A Network Evolution and Model Study from 1990 to 2019.

As dengue is an increasing global health threat, a better understanding of the global circulation dynamics and its determinants would be helpful for precise prevention and control of dengue. The dynamics of global circulation of the four dengue virus serotypes were explored utilizing genetic sequences through a network-based method. Four new circulation indicators, including local intensity, betweenness centrality, tip frequency, and persistence time, were defined. Three circulation roles, including source, hub, and destination, were proposed on the basis of new indicators. Spatial and tempora
