Several European animal nutrition companies have incorporated essential oils (EOs) into animal feed as a result of the prohibition of antibiotics to promote animal growth. Previous studies of EOs have highlighted the absence of bacterial resistance for these substances, although most of the published works focus on studying their tolerance to subinhibitory doses. For this study, oregano essential oil (OEO) was chosen for its proven inhibitory and bactericidal activity. This study is an in vitro assay of the possible induction of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains with reduced susc

This study investigated a case of spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) in tongue pathological lesions. The patient experienced a local recurrence and distant metastasis after surgical intervention. Although standard chemotherapy was administered, a granulomatous mass continued to develop. This aggressive growth led to survival of the tumor. Secondary debulking surgery was performed to improve the patient's quality of life at the request of the patient. Using a tissue sample derived from the secondary debulking surgery, we performed an analysis of the tumor's cell surface antigens, differentiation pot

Selectin-ligand interactions are important for leukocyte homing and functionality. The roles of selectin-ligand interactions in modulating immunity to intracellular infections are not completely understood. Mice lacking the expression of fucosyltransferase-IV and -VII (Fucosyltransferase-IV and -VII double knockout, FtDKO) exhibit deficient functionality of selectin-ligand interactions. We addressed the kinetics of infection and immunity to Listeria monocytogenes (LM), an intracellular pathogen, in FtDKO mice. These mice exhibited enhanced ability to clear infection and increased survival to a

PURPOSE: To determine the ability of diverse S. aureus strains to infect the rabbit cornea following topical inoculation, with special emphasis on a strain of unusual virulence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: S. aureus strains (5 × 10(5) colony forming units; CFU) were topically applied onto scarified rabbit corneas or 100 CFU were intrastromally injected into rabbit corneas. Eyes were scored by slit lamp examination (SLE) and corneas were cultured to determine the log CFU. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were quantified by myeloperoxidase assays and corneas underwent histopathological analysis. H

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb). The cyclosporin A (CsA) is an immunosuppressant drug that inhibits calcineurin and has been described as a potential antifungal drug. The present study investigated the effect of CsA on the immune response, fungal load/antigenemia in experimental murine PCM. It was used four groups of BALB/c mice: (a) infected with 1 x 10⁵ Pb18 yeast cells (Pb), (b) infected and treated with CsA every other day 10 mg/kg of CsA (s.c.) during 30 days (Pb/CsA), (c) treated with CsA (CsA) and (d) no infected

BACKGROUND: Brucella is a facultative, intracellular pathogen that causes severe disease in animals and humans. Immunity against Brucella involves both humoral and cellular responses. To investigate the characteristics of immune response in acute brucellosis in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, IgG and its subclass specific immunoglobulins' (IgG1 and IgG2a) response in sera against B. abortus biotype 1 infection were studied.
METHODOLOGY: Thirty-six rats were inoculated intraperitoneally with 0.1 ml apyrogenic saline containing 1x10(10) colony forming unit (CFU) of B. abortus biotype 1 Korean bovine

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Emdogain (EMD), used for periodontal regeneration, on the growth of periodontal pathogens like Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. For comparison, we studied the effect of EMD on several microbes associated with other oral diseases as well as its effect on non-pathogenic oral inhabitants.
METHODS: Freshly prepared EMD or its vehicle propylene glycol alginate (PGA) alone were added to calibrated suspensions of microbes. As a control, imitating the post-surgical subgingival situ

This report describes a patient with a large granular lymphocyte leukaemia (CD8 + lymphoproliferative disease) and severe neutropenia (less than 0.5 x 10(9)/l) in whom exercise resulted in a marked lymphocytosis, a phenomenon which has not previously been recorded. The lymphocyte count at rest was within normal limits (2.2 x 10(9)/l), then fell to the resting level within 15 min of cessation of exercise. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells showed the morphology of large granular lymphocytes (LGL) by light and electron microscopy both at rest (30%) and to a much greater extent during exercis

BACKGROUND: HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis is the second leading cause of AIDS-related deaths, with a 10-week mortality rate of 25-30%. Fungal load assessed by colony-forming unit (CFU) counts is used as a prognostic marker and to monitor response to treatment in research studies. PCR-based assessment of fungal load could be quicker and less labour-intensive. We sought to design, optimise, and validate quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for the detection, identification, and quantification of Cryptococcus infections in patients with cryptococcal meningitis in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bovine mastitis is one of the most economically significant diseases affecting dairy cattle, leading to substantial losses due to decreased milk yield, higher treatment costs, and lower milk quality. Iodine-based teat disinfectants are commonly used to prevent mastitis but have several limitations, such as milk residue contamination, potential skin irritation, environmental persistence, and concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Plant-derived antimicrobials have thus gained interest as potential alternatives. Clove leaf oil from Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Candida albicans has been implicated in denture stomatitis, and this effect is exacerbated by nicotine exposure. However, studies have also suggested that caffeine exposure inhibits the growth of C. albicans. The interaction effects of nicotine and caffeine are not yet clear on the growth of C. albicans.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of caffeine on metabolic activity and biofilm formation of C. albicans growing on acrylic denture resin while simultaneously exposed to nicotine and, if an effect were to be identified, whether this

Helicobacter pylori infection of the gastric mucosa causes an active-chronic inflammation that is strongly linked to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. However, greater than 80% of individuals infected with H. pylori are asymptomatic beyond histologic inflammation, and it is unknown what factors influence the incidence and character of bacterial-associated gastritis and related disorders. Because previous studies demonstrated that the Muc1 epithelial glycoprotein inhibited inflammation during acute lung infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we asked whether Muc1

The clinical criteria for the diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia (ET) according to the polycythemia vera study group (PVSG) do not distinguish between ET and thrombocythemia associated with early stage PV and prefibrotic chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis (CIMF). The clinical criteria of the PVSG for the diagnosis of polycythemia vera (PV) only detects advanced stage of PV with increased red cell mass. The bone marrow criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) are defined by pathologists to explicitly define the pathological criteria for the diagnostic differentiation of ET, PV, and pre

Sox2 is a key transcription factor for embryonic development and plays a critical role in determining the fate of stem cells. Recently, Sox2 has been detected in several human tumors, indicating a potential function in tumorigenesis. We initially reported remarkably increased nuclear Sox2 staining in cervical carcinomas compared with normal cervix (P < .05). Furthermore, Sox2 staining was detected in most tumorsphere cells isolated from fresh cervical cancer tissues but not among the differentiated tumorsphere cells. When Sox2 was stably expressed in cervical cancer cells (SiHa and HeLa), Sox2

UNLABELLED: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, which may be attenuated by anti-inflammatory treatment. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have the ability to differentiate into mature endothelium and have a potentially reparative role protecting against ischemia and atherosclerosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of treatment with infliximab on the number and functional capacity of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in patients with RA, as a possible mechanism for reducing cardiovascular morbidity in this disorder.
PATIENTS:

BXSB mice, a recently developed autoimmune strain, develop a human lupus-like disease with B cell hyperplasia in peripheral lymphoid organs. Unlike other experimental models of autoimmunity and human lupus, BXSB male mice manifest accelerated autoimmune phenomena through the influence of a Y chromosome-linked enhancing factor. The present studies were performed to investigate the features of B lymphopoiesis in BXSB mice and to determine whether differences exist between BXSB males and females in this respect. B lineage cell populations in the marrow of BXSB mice were identified phenotypically

Stromal support is critical for lung homeostasis and the maintenance of an effective epithelial barrier. Despite this, previous studies have found a positive association between the number of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) isolated from the alveolar compartment and human lung diseases associated with epithelial dysfunction. We hypothesised that bronchoalveolar lavage derived MSCs (BAL-MSCs) are dysfunctional and distinct from resident lung tissue MSCs (LT-MSCs). In this study, we comprehensively interrogated the phenotype and transcriptome of human BAL-MSCs and LT-MSCs. We found that MSCs we

Radiation induced fibrosis of the skin is a late toxicity that may result in loss of function due to reduced range of motion and pain. The current study sought to determine if oral delivery of quercetin mitigates radiation-induced cutaneous injury. Female C3H/HeN mice were fed control chow or quercetin-formulated chow (1% by weight). The right hind leg was exposed to 35 Gy of X rays and the mice were followed serially to assess acute toxicity and hind leg extension. Tissue samples were collected for assessment of soluble collagen and tissue cytokines. Human and murine fibroblasts were subjecte
