Two groundbreaking reports were published in Acta Cytologica at the transition of 1976 to 1977. One appeared in the last issue of 1976 [Meisels and Fortin: Acta Cytol 1976;20:505-509] and the other in the first issue of 1977 [Purola and Savia: Acta Cytol 1977;21:26-31]. Today, 40 years later, it is not an overstatement to conclude that these are the two most influential studies ever published in this journal. Two reports with a similar content being published so close together (in the same journal) raised the question "Which of the two reports was truly submitted first?" In this commentary, th

Acute urinary retention in women is a rarely seen phenomenon due to pharmacological, neuromuscular, anatomical, functional and infectious causes. Human papillomaviruses causing condyloma acuminata is one of the rarely reported viral infectious cause of acute urinary retention in case reports. A 45-year-old woman with acute urinary retention was found to have a round solid lesion on external urethral meatus. Histopathological examination revealed as condyloma acuminata. Urethral condyloma can be treated by local excision as an effective method for early improvement of voiding function. Even if

Possible modes of transmission of the human papilloma virus (HPV) in children include perinatal transmission, sexual transmission, or extragenital contact. Conventional treatment options with chemical and physical destruction methods can be difficult and painful and often require general anesthesia. Imiquimod is a topically active immunomodulatory agent that has been shown to successfully treat pediatric anogenital warts. We report on a case of extensive anogenital warts in a 18-month-old girl who was successfully treated with topical 5% imiquimod cream.

As the most commonly sexually transmitted disease worldwide, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. HPV infections most commonly affect young adults, women under 25 in particular. The most common risk factor for HPV infection in both sexes is a high number of lifetime sexual partners, whereas leading protective factors include circumcision, consistent condom use, and abstinence. Over 100 HPV types have been identified to date and are classified according to their level of oncogenic potential. HPV types 6 and 11 are responsible for approxi

We report a 35-year-old man with bladder carcinoma developing 2 months after urethral condyloma acuminatum, with an 8-year history of persistent human papilloma virus-58 infection in the urinary tract. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Human papilloma virus-6 and -58 were detected in the condyloma, whereas human papilloma virus-58 was detected in the carcinoma. In situ hybridization analysis also demonstrated high-risk human papilloma virus-DNA signals in the condyloma and carcinoma tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that p16-INK4a and mcm-7, surrogate markers of onc

OBJECTIVE: The aim of study was to evaluate prevalence of genital warts in Czech Republic.
SUBJECT: Multicentric prospective observation study.
SETTING: HPV College.
METHODS: During 6 month (February 2010 - July 2010) 20 private gynaecological centers in all Czech Republic were counting up the number of genital warts cases. Risk factors, therapy and knowledges about genital warts were evaluated.
RESULTS: There were 637 patients with genital warts in cohort of 70 980 patients. The prevalence of genital warts was 0.89%. The most frequent risk factor was cigarette smoking in 37%. Main strateg

Imiquimod is a topical immune response modifier used to treat anogenital warts. Although considered a safe drug, mild to moderate local and systemic side-effects may occasionally occur. We report three cases of local and systemic adverse effects related to imiquimod, including one case that mimicked meningitis, which promptly resolved with drug cessation.

Despite some recent hopeful therapeutic developments such as topical green tea derivatives, the therapy of anogenital warts remains a medical problem. Both physician- and self-administered therapeutic approaches are not fully satisfactory. The high recurrence rates associated with the current therapy of anogenital warts together with their increasing incidence and burden of disease further support the use of the prophylactic quadrivalent VLP HPV 6,11,16,18 vaccine for control of HPV-associated neoplasias in women and men.

Condyloma acuminatum (CA), which is a large cauliflower-like tumor, has been linked to human papilloma virus (HPV) types associated with skin warts. It is an uncommon condition in children, and there is no consensus regarding the optimal treatment. HPV may be acquired via sexual transmission, vertical transmission or extragenital contact. We report herein a 1.5-year-old girl with perianal giant CA, which developed due to extragenital contact and consisted of HPV types 6 and 18, to emphasize the effectiveness of surgical excision.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are small DNA viruses of the papovavirus family, with more than 100 types already described. Their importance in human disease cannot be overemphasized because these agents are among the most common pathogens in cutaneous infectious diseases and are very important in a subset of predominantly, but not exclusively, genital squamous-cell carcinomas. HPVs can be associated with a variety of cutaneous as well as mucosal manifestations. Some types of HPVs are associated with increased risk of epithelial malignancies; these have been divided into low-risk and high-risk

As the incidence of genital warts increases, warts arising in the mouth, throat and other sites can occasionally be seen. Condyloma gigantea in genital sites are often reported, but literature on genital warts in transsexuals is rare. We present a case of C. gigantea in a 23-year-old male-to-female transsexual, whose warts arose on the transplanted skin of a neovagina and in the perianal region. We conclude that although C. gigantea can occur in transsexuals, the best way to treat it is not clear.

BACKGROUND: Interferon has been widely used in the treatment of genital warts for its immunomodulatory, antiproliferative and antiviral properties. Currently, no evidence that interferon improves the complete response rate or reduces the recurrence rate of genital warts has been generally provided. The aim of this review is to assess, from randomized control trials (RCTs), the efficacy and safety of interferon in curing genital warts.
METHODS: We searched Cochrane Sexually Transmitted Diseases Group's Trials Register (January, 2009), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (2009, issue

This study evaluated the psychological impact caused by genital warts and whether this altered over time. Eighty-four patients with genital warts and a group of 28 appropriately matched volunteers from the local general population were recruited. The patients were divided into three groups of 28 according to the Health Protection Agency classification codes for genital warts. A comprehensive health questionnaire was completed by all participants. Patients with first attack genital warts experienced significantly more distress, anxiety and depression and were less satisfied with their lives tha
