Evaluation of the tear film instability in children with allergic diseases.

CONTEXT: The presence of dry eye syndrome (DES) in ocular allergic diseases was evaluated in several studies. Despite this, little exists about the tear film instability in atopic children including patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and asthma. This is a study which presents intriguing findings regarding the relationship of tear film instability with clinical aspects in atopic children. OBJECTIVE: To determine the tear film instability in children with AR, AC and asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five consecutive children with AR, AC and a

Does migration affect asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema prevalence? Global findings from the international study of asthma and allergies in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants to Westernized countries adopt the prevalence of allergic diseases of native populations, yet no data are available on immigrants to low-income or low-disease prevalence countries. We investigated these questions using data from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. METHODS: Standardized questionnaires were completed by 13-14-year-old adolescents and by the parent/guardians of 6-7-year-old children. Questions on the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema, and a wide range of factors postulated to be associated with these con

[The return of the prodigal child or allergy to ficus].

Ficus benjamina (FB), the weeping fig, belonging to the Moracea family, is now widely used as an indoor ornamental plant in houses and offices. Its latex can be responsible of IgE allergies : rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, angiooedema, pruritus, anaphylactic shock. In some occupations such as gardeners, caretakers of plants, it can induce a contact urticaria. Most of these patients are atopics. We describe a case of non-occupational, indoor related rhinoconjunctivitis in a non-atopic patient. Prick-test and RAST to FB latex were positive and removal of the ficus plant resolved their symptoms con

Facial dermatitis, contact urticaria, rhinoconjunctivitis, and asthma induced by potato.

BACKGROUND: Potato contains multiple heat-labile proteins which can induce immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Rhino-conjunctivitis, asthma, contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis have been described in association with potato exposure. OBJECTIVE: A patient with possible airborne facial dermatitis to potato is described. RESULTS: A middle-aged atopic housewife with pre-existent atopic dermatitis suffered from rhino-conjunctivitis, asthma, and contact urticaria when pealing raw potatoes, but her main complaint was intense, treatment-resistant dermatitis of the face. The investigat

[Ficus benjamina allergy].

We report the case of a 48-year-old patient suffered from asthma and conjunctivitis caused by an immediate type allergy to weeping fig (Ficus benjamina). By RAST inhibition test we could demonstrate that IgE antibodies react with allergens of fig; however our patient tolerated figs in oral provocation test. Sensitization to latex proteins reported to be cross reactive to Ficus species was not found. Ficus benjamina allergens represent relevant indoor allergens. A standardized allergen extract for skin testing is not yet available. Allergen specific IgE is mostly found in patients with strongly

The overlap of atopy and functional gastrointestinal disorders among 23,471 patients in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Activation of the immune system has been demonstrated in atopy and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Previous data from our group have suggested a connection between immune dysregulation, FGIDs and mood disorders. AIM: To investigate if these data translate to clinical practice and examine connections from the perspective of FGIDs to determine whether atopy and FGIDs are connected via mood disorders. METHODS: Evidence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia (FD) and constipation was sought from the medical records of 30,000 primary care records over a

IL3 SNP rs40401 variant is a risk factor for rhinoconjunctivitis in Japanese women: the Kyushu Okinawa maternal and child health study.

BACKGROUND: No studies have investigated the relationship between IL3 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs40401 and allergic rhinitis. We performed a case-control study to examine this issue and to assess interactions between the SNP and smoking or older siblings in young adult Japanese women. METHODS: Included were 393 women who met the criteria of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) for rhinoconjunctivitis. Controls were 767 women without rhinoconjunctivitis according to the ISAAC criteria who had not been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis by a doctor. RE

Ocular symptom reduction in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis treated with the intranasal corticosteroid mometasone furoate.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is more appropriately termed allergic rhinoconjunctivitis owing to the equally bothersome nasal and ocular symptoms. Extensive evidence supports the ability of intranasal corticosteroids to reduce nasal symptoms of AR, although less evidence is available to define clearly their impact on allergic conjunctivitis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of the intranasal corticosteroid mometasone furoate nasal spray (NS) on the ocular symptoms of seasonal AR. METHODS: This retrospective pooled analysis of 4 placebo-controlled clinical studies randomized patients 1

Atopic disease, rhinitis and conjunctivitis, and upper respiratory infections.

In this section, we review three broad topics in pediatrics: atopic disease, rhinitis and conjunctivitis, and upper respiratory tract infections. These topics comprise three of the most commonly encountered problems in pediatric practice. There have been significant contributions to the pediatric literature in each of these areas over the past year, and we review those of particular interest here. The papers that we have chosen to review were selected for both their scientific significance and practicality. Both review articles and original research are included, but all should be relevant to

Unraveling the impact of neonatal jaundice on allergic diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal jaundice, a condition characterized by elevated bilirubin levels in newborns, is prevalent, affecting up to 60% of term infants. Previous observational studies have linked neonatal jaundice to an enhanced risk of allergic diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis (AD), allergic conjunctivitis (AC), allergic rhinitis (AR), and urticaria. However, the causal relationship remains unclear due to potential confounding factors and reverse causality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a two-sample MR analysis using genetic variants as instrumental variables. Data from large-s

Recent prevalence of allergic rhinitis caused by house dust mites among the pediatric population in Fukui, Japan.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated type I allergic chronic nasal disease common among all age groups, including the pediatric population. House dust mites (HDMs) are globally ubiquitous and the most important indoor aeroallergen. However, the recent prevalence of HDM-caused AR (AR-HDM) in Japan remains unknown, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the current prevalence of AR-HDM, its clinical features, and the current status of medical examinations in elementary school students. METHODS: A survey of 41,000 eleme
