[Association of an arachnoid cyst with heterotopic neuroglial tissue in the internal auditory canal].

OBJECTIVES: We report a case of an association of an arachnoid cyst with heterotopic neuroglial tissue in the internal auditory canal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 66-year-old woman consulted for cochleovestibular syndrome. RESULTS: MRI demonstrated a lesion with spontaneous hypersignal on T1- and T2-weighted images, instigating surgical exploration. We discovered a hematic arachnoid cyst associated with heterotopic neuroglial tissue arising in the internal auditory canal. CONCLUSION: An arachnoid cyst arising within the cerebellopontine angle or the internal auditory canal is a rare occurrence.

Haemorrhage into an arachnoid cyst: a serious complication of minor head trauma.

Arachnoid cysts are infra-arachnoidal cerebrospinal fluid collections that are usually asymptomatic. However, they can become acutely symptomatic because of haemorrhage and cyst enlargement, which may result from minor head trauma. The range of symptoms is wide and many are "soft" signs. Diagnosis is important as cysts causing mass effect require surgery. A case is reported of a child presenting with localised headaches after minor head trauma. Computed tomography demonstrated an arachnoid cyst with evidence of haemorrhage, which required surgical intervention. Other cases of arachnoid cyst pr

[Baker's cyst in osteoarticular tuberculosis of the knee joint].

A Baker cyst (synovial cyst) in the right knee-joint was demonstrated by ultrasound in a 70-year-old woman with recurrent knee-joint effusions after minimal trauma to the knee. Radiological examination in two planes showed degenerative changes corresponding to age. Needle puncture of the knee-joint demonstrated numerous neutrophil granulocytes. As the effusion recurred after one week, despite rest and avoidance of weight bearing, arthroscopy with removal of the cyst was indicated. But surprisingly histological examination of synovial tissue revealed epithelioid granulomas and Langerhans giant

Orbital Hydatid Cyst, A rare cause of exophthalmos in paediatric population: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst is a parasitic infection caused by a tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, mainly involving the liver and lungs with orbital involvement being very rare but when involved can result in unilateral proptosis leading to vision loss in chronic cases. Here, we present a rare case of unilateral orbital hydatid cyst in young male patient of pediatric age group which was successfully treated. CASE REPORT: A four years old male patient presented with history of trauma and unilateral painless temporal proptosis with dystopia of right eye for two months. On ocular examination, his v

[Diagnosis of popliteal cysts and their complications].

Popliteal cysts and their complications (rupture, expansion and pseudothrombosis) all of which may simulate deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremity may be diagnosed reliably by ultrasonography. Even small cysts can be detected, their extension can be defined and rupture with leakage of fluid into the surrounding muscles can be diagnosed. Phlebography can be avoided in most cases. Arthrography rarely gives additional information. Ultrasonography of the erect patient is recommended if rupture is suspected.

Right Trochlear Nerve Palsy as an Uncommon Manifestation of Arachnoid Cyst.

The majority of arachnoid cysts are congenital intracranial lesions that develop in the early embryonic stages as a result of a slight irregularity in the cerebrospinal fluid's (CSF) passage through the embryonic mesenchyme. Most of the time, these cysts are asymptomatic all throughout life. Diplopia caused by an arachnoid cyst is extremely rare. We present a rare event of isolated fourth nerve palsy in a 56-year-old woman brought on by an intracranial arachnoid cyst. Her only presenting symptom was vertical diplopia for one week. She denied any history of trauma. Ocular motility revealed limi

Depressive symptomatology and pineal epidermoid cyst: a case report.

Introduction Intracranial epidermoid cysts are congenital cysts. They comprise 0.2-1.8% of primary intracranial tumours and are four to nine … structive hydrocephalus. Discussion Pineal cysts may enlarge over time, because of either increased cyst fluid or intracystic haemorrhage, and become symptomatic. Brain radiological investigations in patients with depressive symptomatology may be substantial.

Postural headache in marfan syndrome associated with spinal cysts and liquor hypotension.

We here report a 13-year-old Marfan patient who suffered from severe, medication-resistant, intermittent headache, which was provoked when getting into an upright position and immediately relieved by lying down or after intravenous rehydration. The postural benefit and the sudden relief after intravenous hydration suggested (intermittent) intracranial hypotension, although a normal opening pressure on lumbar punction was observed and no cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage was identified. Imaging studies revealed severe dural ectasia at lumbosacral level, and two intradural cysts and two extradur

Quadrigeminal cyst management by cystoperitoneal shunt in a 4-year-old Persian cat.

Quadrigeminal cysts represent intracranial cystic accumulations of cerebrospinal fluid within the arachnoid mater at the level of the quadrigeminal cistern. Quadrigeminal cysts are rare in cats, with only one previous report in the veterinary literature. A 4-year-old, male-neutered Persian cat was presented with a 1-year duration of initially episodic, but later progressive, obtundation and collapse. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a quadrigeminal cyst with marked compression of the adjacent neural structures, cerebellar herniation and obstructive hydrocephalus. Cystoperitonea

[Perineural cysts causing severe back pain and pathological fracture of the massa lateralis of the sacrum].

We report on the case of an 81-year-old woman who was hospitalised because of severe pain at the sacro-iliacal joint radiating into the left leg without any accompanying neurological defect. X-rays demonstrated a step in the left massa lateralis of the sacrum, thus CT scans and MRI were performed, and multiple perineural cysts (Tarlov's cysts) were found. The patient underwent microsurgical treatment by fenestration of the cyst wall and evacuation of the fluid content in order to avoid further expansion of the cysts. Under consequent treatment with pain killers, complete mobilisation of the pa

Surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatidosis in children: experience in 92 patients.

Ninety-two patients with a total of 112 pulmonary hydatid cysts underwent surgical treatment in our clinic between January 1980 and January 1992. Nine patients were found to have concomitant liver and pulmonary hydatid cysts. There were 65 boys and 27 girls; the age range was 5 to 14 years. The authors performed cystotomy and capitonnage in 78 patients, lobectomy in 9, segmentectomy in 3, and wedge resection in 2. Of 9 cases with concomitant liver and pulmonary hydatid cysts, 8 were approached by right thoracophrenotomy and 1 by median sternotomy and right phrenotomy. A one-stage operation via

EgCF mediates macrophage polarisation by influencing the glycolytic pathway.

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disorder triggered by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) and predominantly occurred in the liver and lungs. The M2 macrophage level is considerably elevated among the liver of patients with hepatic CE and performs an integral function in liver fibrosis. However, the mechanism of CE inducing polarisation of macrophage to an M2 phenotype is unknown. In this study, macrophage was treated with E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) to explore the mechanism of macrophage polarisation. Consequently, the expression of the M2 macrophage …

[Relevance and therapy of intracranial arachnoidal cysts].

Intracranial arachnoidal cysts (AC) are relevant due to their space-demanding character. The pathophysiological sequelae are dependent on the size and location of the cyst and the patient's age. Direct pressure on surrounding tissue causes headaches (meninges) or rarely seizures (brain tissue). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation disturbances resulting from brain mass displacement with occlusion of, for example, the foramen monroi or the aqueduct cause occlusive hydrocephalus, which can lead to an increase in intracranial pressure. Depending on age, the typical primary clinical symptoms or f

Cerebrospinal fluid galactorrhea: a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunting.

In this report we describe a 26-year-old woman who had an intra-abdominal pseudocyst located at the peritoneal catheter tip following ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt implantation. Retrograde cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flowed outside the catheter and communicated with the right breast lactiferous ductal system and leaked from the nipple orifice. CSF galactorrhea only occurs when the lactiferous duct is injured during VP shunt implantation, in combination with the formation of an intra-abdominal CSF pseudocyst prior to lactiferous duct healing. Leakage of CSF from the nipple orifice can be succe

[De novo arachnoid cyst treated with a cystoperitoneal shunt].

INTRODUCTION: Arachnoid cysts (AC) are benign pathological structures that are typically found during childhood, and represent approximately 1% of all intracranial lesions. Unlike cases of secondary cysts with a known causation, which can be attributed to inflammatory processes or traumatic brain injuries, the causation of the primary cysts is unknown. In the cases reported to date, the cysts present from the first imaging study conducted, which is why they are considered to be of a prenatal origin. CASE REPORT: A boy who, at the age of 5 months, is found to have an AC of considerable dimensi

A case report of fatal disseminated cystic echinococcosis in a chimpanzee referred from a zoo in Shiraz City, Iran.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) and has been rarely reported in non-human primates. This report describes a fatal case of heavy cystic echinococcosis in an adult chimpanzee from a zoo in Shiraz city, southern Iran. Necropsy revealed hydatid cysts involving daughter cysts in the thoracic cavity, liver, spleen, and pericardium. The cyst rupture and leakage of hydatid fluid were observed in the thoracic cavity. This was considered the likely cause of animal death. Molecular analysis of cyst samples targeting the c

Inclusion cysts after manual small incision cataract surgery: insights into presentation, management and outcomes.

We report a series of three patients who developed conjunctival inclusion cysts following manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). Presenting symptoms included foreign body sensation and ocular irritation, sometimes mistaken for filtering blebs. Diagnosis was confirmed through slit-lamp examination, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Surgical management varied: two cases underwent complete cyst excision with fluid aspiration, while the third case was managed by aspiration alone. Histopathology consistently confirmed epithelial incl

Curious Case of a Giant Retroperitoneal Cyst.

Adrenal cysts are uncommon fluid-filled masses that develop in the adrenal gland. Typically, they are non-functional, asymptomatic, and smaller than 10 cm in diameter when incidentally detected. However, the presence of giant adrenal cysts, exceeding 10 cm in diameter, creates a diagnostic challenge due to the difficulty in determining their origin. Surgical intervention is advised when the cyst surpasses 10 cm in diameter, produces symptoms, causes endocrine abnormalities, exhibits intracystic bleeding, or raises suspicion of malignancy. The preferred treatment approach involves adrenalectomy
