Influence of Plant and Animal Proteins on Inflammation Markers among Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Proteins, especially plant proteins, may reduce inflammation among adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the effect protein types (animal or plant) have on inflammation markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α) among adults with varying stages of CKD. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) was conducted to identify articles from inception until January 2021, utilizing six databases. Controlled trials that compared the effects of different protein types were analyzed using random-effects meta-analys

Evaluation of the quality of published SCI clinical practice guidelines using the AGREE II instrument: Results from Can-SCIP expert panel.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex condition with substantial adverse personal, social and economic impacts necessitating evidence-based inter-professional care. To date, limited studies have assessed the quality of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) within SCI. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of the development process and methodological rigour of published SCI CPGs across the care continuum from pre-hospital to community-based care. METHODS: Electronic health databases and indexes were searched to identify English or French language CPGs within SCI publish

Congestion Pricing Policies and Safety Implications: a Scoping Review.

Congestion pricing policies (CPPs) are a common strategy for addressing urban traffic congestion. Research has explored several impacts of these policies (e.g., air quality, equity, congestion relief). The purpose of this review was to synthesize findings from publications examining CPP impacts on road user safety outcomes. We conducted a systematic search of relevant literature in four large research databases (Transport Research International Documentation, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus), searching from database inception through January 2021. We identified 18 eligible publications. Saf

Integrating data from multidisciplinary Management of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive malignancy that most commonly affects the pleural layers. MPM has a strong association with asbestos, mainly caused by exposure to its biopersistent fibers in at least 80% of cases. Individuals with a chronic exposure to asbestos might develop disease with a 20-40-year latency with few or no symptoms. Such has been the case in the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy, where industrial production of materials laden with asbestos, mainly cements, has been responsible for the onset of a large epidemic. Since 2018, a mul

Multicenter evaluation of the VITEK MS matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry system for identification of bacteria, including Brucella, and yeasts.

The use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry has proven to be rapid and accurate for the majority of clinical isolates. Some gaps remain concerning rare, emerging, or highly pathogenic species, showing the need to continuously expand the databases. In this multicenter study, we evaluated the accuracy of the VITEK MS v3.2 database in identifying 1172 unique isolates compared to identification by DNA sequence analysis. A total of 93.6% of the isolates were identified to species or group/complex level. A remaining 5.2% of the isolates were id

Diagnostic accuracy of the WHO clinical definitions for dengue and implications for surveillance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the world's most common mosquito-borne virus but remains diagnostically challenging due to its nonspecific presentation. Access to laboratory confirmation is limited and thus most reported figures are based on clinical diagnosis alone, the accuracy of which is uncertain. This systematic review assesses the diagnostic accuracy of the traditional (1997) and revised (2009) WHO clinical case definitions for dengue fever, the basis for most national guidelines. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, OpenGrey, and the annual Dengue Bulletin were searched for s

Consideration of antimicrobial resistance and contextual factors in infectious disease guidelines: a systematic survey.

OBJECTIVES: Guidelines that include antimicrobial recommendations should explicitly consider contextual factors that influence antimicrobial resistance and their downstream effects on resistance selection. The objectives were to analyse (1) how, and to what extent, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea and respiratory tract infection guidelines are considering antimicrobial resistance; (2) are of acceptable quality and (3) if they can be easily contextualised to fit the needs of specific populations and health systems. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and searched Ovid MEDLINE and Embase from 1 J

The role of public health versus invasive coronary interventions in the decline of coronary heart disease mortality.

PURPOSE: There has been considerable debate on the extent to which the decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality has been caused by better control of coronary risk factors in the general population or is the result of invasive coronary interventions in symptomatic individuals. METHODS: Using the Myocardial Infarction Data Acquisition System, a statewide database of all cardiovascular hospital admissions in New Jersey, we examined time trends in incidence of death from CHD in the Years 2000-2014 in persons with a history of hospitalization for CHD in the previous 10 years and those wit

Dietary natural methylxanthines and colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Some evidence suggests that caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, as natural methylxanthines (MTXs), possess anti-cancer effects. We systematically reviewed the animal and human studies investigating the effect of (or association between) dietary natural MTXs on (and) colorectal cancer (CRC) and performed a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies. Relevant studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge through September 2020. The overall relative risk (RR) and confidence interval (CI) were determined using a random-effects model. Eight animal and eight e
