Nematodes of the genus Trichinella are maintained in nature by sylvatic or domestic cycles. The sylvatic cycle is widespread on all continents, from frigid to torrid zones, and it is maintained by cannibalism and scavenging behavior of carnivores. Bartonella species were isolated from 49% of 128 cattle from California and Oklahoma, 90% of 42 mule deer from California, and 15% of 100 elk from California and Oregon. Isolates from all 63 cattle, 14 deer, and 1 elk had the same polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles. Our findings indicate potential for inter- and intraspecies transmission among ruminants, as well as risk that these Bartonella spp. could act as zoonotic agents.

Domestic sheep were intradermally inoculated with culture-derived stationary phase Leishmania donovani promastigotes. Sampling of site of inoculation, liver and spleen for 244 days showed that this parasite can stay alive in the skin for up to 28 days post-inoculation. We report a penetrating abdominal injury due to a piece of glass, a very unusual domestic accident, in a 2-year-old boy who was admitted to the emergency department with an evisceration through the umbilicus. His mother reported that she was asleep when the boy came to her room, and did not know how it had happened. We primarily suspected child abuse, but the presence of a piece of glass in the boy's heel led us to think of a domestic accident. He had poured himself a glass of water, and then fell on the glass. We could not find a similar case in the literature on domestic accidents.

The present study was designed to determine the susceptibility of domestic animals to an isolate of Taenia solium from Hainan Province, People's Republic of China. A total of 162 cysticerci were recovered from two pigs and 21 from two dogs after experimental inoculation. Cats, goats and a calf were not susceptible to T. solium. Cysticerci were recovered mainly from muscles of the pigs and all were alive. The remainder were in the liver and only one was alive. In the dog, all cysticerci were recovered from the muscles and all were alive.
