Parallel prediction of dengue cases with different risks in Mexico using an artificial neural network model considering meteorological data.

In 2022, Mexico registered an increase in dengue cases compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the amount of precipitation reported annually was slightly less than the previous year. Similarly, the minimum-mean-maximum temperatures recorded annually were below the previous year. In the literature, it is possible to find studies focused on the spread of dengue only for some specific regions of Mexico. However, given the increase in the number of cases during 2022 in regions not considered by previously published works, this study covers cases reported in all states of the country. On

Membrane computing simulation of sexually transmitted bacterial infections in hotspots of individuals with various risk behaviors.

The epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is complex due to the coexistence of various pathogens, the variety of transmission modes derived from sexual orientations and behaviors at different ages and genders, and sexual contact hotspots resulting in network transmission. There is also a growing proportion of recreational drug users engaged in high-risk sexual activities, as well as pharmacological self-protection routines fostering non-condom practices. The frequency of asymptomatic patients makes it difficult to develop a comprehensive approach to STI epidemiology. Modeling

Toward feminist principles for epidemiology and public health.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiology has traditionally examined the distribution and determinants of health in populations. While early work focused on social determinants and collective conditions, recent decades have seen a shift toward individualized, molecular, and risk-based models emphasizing behavior, biology, and lifestyle. This shift has often obscured structural determinants and reinforced a biomedical paradigm. Feminist scholarship critiques these trends by centering lived experiences, power dynamics, and inequities in health research. MAIN BODY: This commentary explores how feminist principle

The effect of various interventions during a typhoid epidemic. Results of a simulation study.

This paper presents an epidemiological model for typhoid fever epidemics or paratyphoid diseases with an enteric course, as well as a deterministic approach for the quantitative representation of this model. The model has been tested against one typhoid and two paratyphoid epidemics which occurred in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was possible to simulate the course of these epidemics with sufficient precision, and to obtain information on the effects of various interventions (e.g. oral vaccination or hygiene measures).

NSAID use and decreased risk of gastrointestinal cancers.

The accumulating evidence suggests that aspirin or other NSAIDs may prevent or inhibit the development of colon and perhaps other digestive tract cancers. Although the clinical, experimental, and epidemiologic evidence is promising, the hypothesis remains unproven except in the models of chemically induced colon cancer in rodents and adenomatous polyps in patients with FAP. Clinicians should await the results of randomized trials before using NSAIDs for cancer prevention or treatment. Recommendations are as follows: 1. Experimental studies should define the mechanism or mechanisms by which NSA

Preclinical immunogenicity of the LP.8.1-adapted BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine.

SARS-CoV-2 evolution toward antigenically distinct lineages drives escape from host immunity. JN.1 lineage derivatives have recently dominated the global epidemiologic landscape. In preclinical models, an LP.8.1-adapted BNT162b2 vaccine elicited higher serum neutralizing antibody responses against contemporary, circulating JN.1 sublineages, including the epidemiologically dominant XFG lineage, as compared to JN.1 and KP.2 vaccines. These findings supported the selection of an LP.8.1-adapted vaccine for the composition of the 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccine formula.

Prevalence, incidence, prognosis and risk factors of dementia.

The epidemiological evidence on the dementing illnesses suggests that dementia poses an important public health problem. Estimates of the prevalence of dementia indicate that in the twelve countries of the European Community 1.5 to 2.5 million people may be suffering of the disease. The available data on the incidence suggest that in these countries 200,000 to 250,000 people are newly hospitalized yearly for dementia. Fruitful epidemiological approaches to identify preventable causes of the dementing illnesses may include incidence studies across populations, family studies, and risk factors s

Optimising pandemic response through vaccination strategies using neural networks.

Epidemic risk assessment poses inherent challenges, with traditional approaches often failing to balance health outcomes and economic constraints. This paper presents a data-driven decision support tool that models epidemiological dynamics and optimises vaccination strategies to control disease spread while minimising economic losses. The proposed economic-epidemiological framework comprises three phases: modelling, optimising, and analysing. First, a stochastic SVEI3RD compartmental model with eight state variables captures epidemic dynamics, stratifying infections by severity to enable detai

S taphylococcus aureus in bronchiectasis: epidemiology, clinical impact and challenges in management.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by permanent bronchial dilation, productive cough and recurrent exacerbations. Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains (methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA)) is increasingly recognised as a relevant pathogen in bronchiectasis, although its role remains less well defined than that of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Haemophilus influenzae. This narrative review examines the epidemiological, pathophysiological, clinical and therapeutic implications of S. aureus infection in adults with bronchiectasis, drawing compari

Heavy Metal-Induced Hepatic Inflammation: Mechanistic Pathways, Epidemiological Evidence, and the Emerging but Unvalidated Role of Plant-Based Dietary Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) has been associated with hepatic inflammation and metabolic liver dysfunction in experimental and epidemiological studies. Experimental evidence indicates that these metals can disrupt redox homeostasis, impair mitochondrial function, suppress nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent antioxidant responses, and activate inflammatory signaling pathways, with potential relevance to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: PubMed/MEDLIN

The Oral-Brain Axis: A Unified Framework Linking Trigeminal Sensorimotor Dysfunction, Chronic Stress, Neuroinflammation, and Neurodegeneration.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) develop over decades, yet their earliest pathogenic drivers remain poorly understood. Epidemiological and experimental animal studies suggest that disturbances in oral sensorimotor regulation, particularly within trigeminal proprioceptive pathways, may contribute to neural dysfunction long before clinical symptoms emerge. The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MesV), the only primary sensory neuron population located entirely within the central nervous system (CNS), links oral proprioception with brainstem

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as potential risk factors for thyroid cancer: Epidemiological evidence of urinary metabolites and thyroid-related hormones.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is a common malignant tumor of the endocrine system, with a markedly higher incidence in females. While radiation exposure remains the only proven exogenous risk factor, growing evidence implicates environmental pollutants in TC pathogenesis. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals with well-established carcinogenicity. However, epidemiological studies linking PAH exposure to TC risk are still insufficient. In this study, 116 patients with TC and 132 healthy adults were recruited in Guangdong Province, China, to assess the association betw

Tracing the threads: How toxic metals contribute to neurodegeneration.

Brain disorders affect more than one in three people globally, representing a leading cause of disability and morbidity. While the etiology of several of these disorders remains elusive, it is increasingly evident that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to their onset and progression. Given the persistent effects of environmental exposures on biological systems, this review highlights the role of heavy metals (particularly lead, mercury, vanadium, and chromium) in altering behaviour and contributing to the development of neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, such as Alzh

Global, regional and national burden of Glaucoma: an update analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

PURPOSE: As the epidemiological and burden trends of glaucoma are changing, it is extremely necessary to re-investigate geographical differences and trends. Here we use data from the 2019 Global burden of Disease, which aims to report the prevalence and disability-adjusted life years of glaucoma injury to assess the latest epidemiological models and trends from 1990 to 2019. METHOD: Annual case numbers, age-standardized rates of prevalence, DALYs, and their estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) for glaucoma between 1990 and 2019 were derived from the GBD 2019 study. The relationship bet…

Alcohol intake and bradyarrhythmia risk: a cohort study of 407 948 individuals.

AIMS: There is a paucity of epidemiological evidence on alcohol and the risk of bradyarrhythmias. We thus characterized associations of total and beverage-specific alcohol consumption with incident bradyarrhythmias using data from the UK Biobank. METHODS AND RESULTS: Alcohol consumption reported at baseline was calculated as UK standard drinks (8 g alcohol)/week. Bradyarrhythmia events were defined as sinus node dysfunction (SND), high-level atrioventricular block (AVB), and permanent pacemaker implantations. Outcomes were assessed through hospitalization and death records, and dose-response

Risk factors and comorbidities associated with severe aortic stenosis: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Aortic stricture (AS) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in individuals 65 years of age or older. A number of epidemiological studies have suggested that certain cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and comorbidities could be associated with AS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between CRFs and comorbidities and severe symptomatic AS in individuals 65 years of age or older in a Spanish healthcare region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an epidemiological case-control study from a single primary care centre. We collected informa
