PURPOSE: Massive diabetic macular exudates respond poorly to conventional laser treatment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the surgical results of eyes with massive hard exudates secondary to diabetic macular edema treated with combined pars plana vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid removal, focal endolaser treatment, and panretinal photocoagulation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine features identified on US which predict success or failure of air-enema reduction of intussusception.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 117 consecutive episodes of intussusception, presenting for US over a 6-year period. SIgA- and IgG-coated bacteria obtained from 17 discharging middle ears (14 patients, 9 male, 5 female, age range from 1 to 79 years) were evaluated using an immunofluorescence assay. The bacterial flora of chronic venous ulcers treated with an occlusive hydrocolloid dressing were studied over a period of 8 weeks. A novel exudate sampling method was used in an attempt to isolate anaerobic bacteria. The flora was generally stable. Once a species was present, it remained with the exception of Pseudomonas, which appeared to be inhibited by the dressing. Twelve out of 20 ulcers contained anaerobic bacteria and healing did not appear to be impaired by the presence of any particular species of bacteria.

Chronic malignant pleural exudation is generally characterized by little or no fibrin deposition. However, during induced inflammation, fibrin deposition concomitant with cessation of exudation is seen. Fundamental and clinical studies on gynecological use of aztreonam (AZT), a new monobactam, were performed with following results. Following the intravenous administration of 1 g dose of AZT, the transfer of AZT to pelvic dead space exudate was good, in which the concentration of that was 14.9 micrograms/ml (2 hours), 15.3 micrograms/ml (3 hours) after injection. The transfer of AZT to serum of umbilical cord and amniotic fluid was excellent. In a clinical trial, AZT was given to 5 patients with obstetric and gynecological infections.
