An obligatory role for AgRP neurons in maintaining body temperature during time-restricted feeding.

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding but no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feeding behaviors during time-restr…

Lactobacillus plantarum ST-III modulates abnormal behavior and gut microbiota in a mouse model of autism spectrum disorder.

Probiotic treatment might improve autism spectrum disorder (ASD) behavior. In this study, we investigated the improvement effects of Lactobacillus plantarum ST-III on a mouse model of ASD, which was constructed using triclosan. After two weeks of L. plantarum ST-III oral feeding, autism-like social deficits in male mouse models were ameliorated. L. plantarum ST-III also attenuated the self-grooming and freezing times of female mice. High-throughput sequencing revealed changes in the gut microbiota after L. plantarum ST-III intervention. In the female probiotic group, the abundance of beneficia

Feeding forages with reduced particle size in a total mixed ration improves feed intake, total-tract digestibility, and performance of organic dairy cows.

The optimal utilization of forages is crucial in cattle production, especially in organic dairy systems that encourage forage-based feeding with limited concentrate amounts. Reduction of the particle size of forages is known to improve feed intake and thus might be a viable option to help cows cope with less nutrient-dense feeds. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of reducing forage particle size with a geometric mean of 52 mm (conventional particle size; CON) to 7 mm (reduced particle size; RED) in a high-forage diet (80% of dry matter) on dairy cows' sorting behavior, fee

Inhibitory control training and unhealthy behaviours: a meta-analysis testing short and long- term effects in clinical and at-risk populations.

The consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy foods is considered the three key factors contributing to preventable morbidity and early mortality worldwide. Inhibitory Control Training (ICT) is suggested as an intervention to reduce behaviours linked to deficient inhibitory control. However, evidence supporting its efficacy on clinical and at-risk populations is lacking. Here, we provide new meta-analytic evidence about the efficacy of ICT in reducing overeating, alcohol consumption, and cigarette smoking in clinical and at-risk populations. Our meta-analysis encompassed fifteen articles,

Pasture utilization, behavior, and egg quality of Chilean creole and Lohmann brown hens in a rotational free-range system.

Free-range systems integrate pasture access with laying hen production; however, genotype-specific responses under rotational grazing remain insufficiently characterized, particularly for local genetic resources. This study evaluated grazing behavior, pasture utilization, egg production, egg quality traits, and functional egg components of Chilean Creole (ChC) and Lohmann Brown (LB) hens managed in a rotational free-range system in southern Chile. Thirty hens (70 weeks of age) were assigned to two genotypes with three replicate plots per genotype and five hens per plot in a completely randomiz

Dysregulated eating behaviour and microbiota-based interventions targeting eating disorders and food addiction.

The consumption of highly processed, hyperpalatable food in Western societies increases the risk of developing obesity and compulsive eating behaviors, which include food addiction (FA) and eating disorders (EDs), such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). These behaviors can lead to a range of health consequences, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cognitive impairments, and mental health disorders, among others. Given the evidence suggesting the involvement of the gut microbiota in regulating eating behavior, in recent years, scientists have sought to identif

Addressing nutritional issues and eating behaviours among university students: a narrative review.

University life is a critical period for establishing healthy eating habits and attitudes. However, university students are at risk of developing poor eating habits due to various factors, including economic conditions, academic stress and lack of information about nutritional concepts. Poor diet quality leads to malnutrition or overnutrition, increasing the risk of preventable diseases. Food environments on university campuses also play a significant role in shaping the dietary habits of students, with the availability of and accessibility to healthy food options being important factors influ

Food Consumption during Binge Eating Episodes in Binge Eating Spectrum Conditions from a Representative Sample of a Brazilian Metropolitan City.

The prevalence of binge eating spectrum conditions (BESC) are increasing globally. However, there is a lack of data from general population samples in low- and middle-income countries. Thus, this study described the food consumption during objective binge eating episodes (OBE) in people with BESC from a metropolitan city in Brazil. Participants comprised 136 adults (18 years old-60 years old) with Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), or recurrent binge eating (RBE) from a two-phase epidemiological survey. They were interviewed in their homes by trained lay interviewers using the

The role of functional and structural properties of the nucleus accumbens subregions in eating behavior regulation of bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although studies have demonstrated the involvement of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in the neurobiology of eating disorders, its alterations in bulimia nervosa (BN) remain largely unknown. This study investigated the structural and functional properties of NAc in patients with BN. METHOD: Based on the resting-state functional MRI and high-resolution anatomical T1-weighted imaging data acquired from 43 right-handed BN patients and 40 sex-, age- and education-matched right-handed healthy controls (HCs), the group differences in gray matter volume (GMV) and fractional amplitude of low-f

The Association of Nutrition and Exercise Behaviors of Women with Diabetes in Pregnancy with Infant Breastfeeding Practices.

Background: Although breastfeeding confers significant benefits to infants, women with diabetes in pregnancy experience unique nutrition and health challenges, which may influence infant feeding practice. This study aimed to determine the association between nutrition and exercise behaviors of women with diabetes in pregnancy and breastfeeding at birth and 6 months. Methods: A secondary data analysis of a longitudinal study on maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus (DM) and gestational diabetes (GDM) and infant development was conducted. Women self-reported engaging in nutrition behaviors,

Prevalence of Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating Behaviours amongst Adolescents and Young Adults in Saudi Arabia: A Systematic Review.

Eating disorders (EDs) and disordered eating behaviours (DEBs) are significant health problems related to body image and weight dissatisfaction among adolescents and young adults worldwide. During this stage of sensitive development, these behaviours may hinder the optimal growth process and can consequently lead to wasting, stunting, and micronutrient deficiencies. However, there is a limited amount of literature on DEB among Arab populations, particularly in Saudi Arabia. This review aims to assess the prevalence of EDs/DEB and to develop a clear understanding of the epidemiology of such con

Competing for perfection: A scoping review evaluating relationships between competitiveness and eating disorders or disordered eating behaviours.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) impact multiple domains in a person's life including interpersonal interactions. Although a considerable amount of literature has evaluated social comparison and ED pathology, less has focussed on the influence of competitiveness on eating behaviours within ED and community samples. To address this, a systematic scoping review was conducted to evaluate current knowledge on this topic. METHOD: PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews were utilised to identify relevant articles in three databases without limits to date or publication type. RESULTS: A total of 295

Orthorexia nervosa and eating disorder behaviors: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) involves obsessive thoughts about healthy eating and distress related to this obsession. There is still dispute over whether ON should be considered on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, the eating disorder (ED) spectrum, or as its own disorder. Based on current research, orthorexic behaviors seem to be closely related to eating disorder behaviors. However, given the range of instruments used to measure ED and ON, and the lack of consistency in the specific ED domains explored, a review of the current literature is warranted. OBJECTIVE: The objective of thi

Development and initial validation of an underreporting of Disordered Eating Behaviors Scale.

The purpose of this study was to develop the Underreporting of Disordered Eating Behaviors Scale (UDEBS) to detect attempts by respondents to underreport eating patterns that reflect symptoms of an eating disorder. In "Study 1", the scale and validity measures were administered via an online survey to 692 undergraduates. In "Study 2", these measures were administered to 810 undergraduates using a simulation design where participants were randomized to four conditions: (1) answering as truthfully as possible, or as if they are trying to hide (2) Binge Eating Disorder (BED), (3) Anorexia Nervosa
