A systematic review of enteral feeding by nasogastric tube in young people with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with severe restrictive eating disorders often require enteral feeding to provide lifesaving treatment. Nasogastric feeding (NG) is a method of enteral nutrition often used in inpatient settings to treat medical instability, to supplement poor oral intake or to increase nutritional intake. This systematic review sets out to describe current practice of NG in young people with eating disorders. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted by searching AMED, EMBASE and MEDLINE databases from 2000 to 2020. Inclusion terms were: enteral feeding by

Roux-en-Y jejunostomy in gastroparesis: Insight into patient perspectives and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis is a chronic motility disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Patients with refractory gastroparesis often require enteral nutrition support, but traditional feeding methods such as nasojejunal tubes and percutaneous gastrojejunostomy tubes have significant limitations including frequent displacement, infection, and impact on quality of life. AIM: To explore patients' experience post insertion of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y jejunostomy in a cohort of eight adult patients with idiopathic gastroparesis. METHODS: Eight pa…

Feed restriction minimally affects nursery pig colonic function.

Reduced feed intake is a hallmark following weaning, enteric diseases, such as Escherichia coli, and numerous environmental conditions, such as heat stress and has been shown to cause intestinal barrier dysfunction. Currently, several different markers and assays are utilized to evaluate intestinal barrier function, and these methods have not been thoroughly validated. These restrictions may present a potential model to validate and compare multiple in vivo, ex vivo, and tissue markers of intestinal integrity. Forty-eight barrows (9.7 kg initial body weight) were fed for 7 d at 100%, 75%, 50%,

Amylin peptide is increased in preterm neonates with feed intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Amylin, a 37-amino-acid peptide hormone, is a potent inhibitor of gastric emptying. It is co-secreted by the pancreatic beta cells in response to enteral nutrient intake. Feed intolerance is common in preterm neonates and often presents as increased gastric residual volume (GRV). It is therefore hypothesised that serum amylin concentrations are raised in preterm neonates with poor gastric emptying, which may contribute to this observed feed intolerance. OBJECTIVE: To determine serum amylin concentrations in feed-intolerant preterm neonates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Feed-intolerant (

Predictors of emesis and time to goal intake after pyloromyotomy: analysis from a prospective trial.

BACKGROUND: Emesis after pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis is a common clinical phenomenon and the limiting factor in time to goal feeds. The amount of emesis that can be expected after myotomy is unknown. No data have been published that equip caregivers with the ability to understand which patients are more likely to have emesis and take longer to advance to goal feeds after pyloromyotomy. Therefore, we performed analysis of prospective data obtained from a randomized trial to determine if outcome can be predicted from preoperative or intraoperative variables. METHODS: The dataset was pros
