Latent profile analysis of depressive symptoms in older patients with chronic diseases and their relationship with social support study.

Older people constitute a significant group of chronic disease patients. Chronic diseases place a significant financial burden on patients and cause both material and psychological stress. This stress tends to induce frequent depressive moods, which negatively affect the patient's physical and mental health. Although there is a large number of studies that have explored depressive problems, chronic illness, and social support among older people, there is relatively little research related to the heterogeneity of depressive symptoms among older people with chronic disease. In addition, the rela

Enhancing maternal wellbeing: A qualitative exploration of women's experiences of tailored education and holistic support while experiencing Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

PROBLEM: Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), poses significant physical, psychological, emotional, and financial challenges for affected women and their families. Despite its prevalence and impact, tailored education and holistic support interventions are lacking. BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy affect 69 % of pregnancies, HG impacts around 1.1 %, though it is likely underreported. It is a leading cause of early pregnancy hospitalisation. Prior research highlights the benefits of professional support, including individualised health education and telephone calls. However, understanding

Financial Rewards for Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy and Birth Weight: A Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Offering pregnant women financial rewards to stop smoking is associated with a more than 2-fold increase in smoking cessation and is cost-effective; however, it is possible that the association is the result of gaming of the outcome measure (eg, not smoking for 24 hours before outcome measurement using a carbon monoxide breath test). Birth weight is an outcome measure that is independent of the rewards process. OBJECTIVE: To examine birth weight change associated with offering financial rewards for smoking cessation to pregnant women, and to estimate the average expected birth wei

Cultural Capital, Stigma, Class, and Hospice Care Access Among Low-Income Patients With Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Socioeconomic disparities in hospice care access are well recognized, but their structural drivers remain underexplored. Chronic life stressors and pain incidence in adults 50 and older: a longitudinal analysis with implications for pain prevention and public health promotion.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain represents a pressing public health problem affecting more than one in five American adults. Yet, primary prevention efforts aimed at stopping pain before it begins remain substantially underutilized. Chronic life stressors (CLS)-including financial strain, personal health problems, and caregiving burdens-are upstream, modifiable psychosocial risk factors that may drive pain incidence in aging populations. Identifying and addressing these stressors at the population level offers a promising, non-pharmacological pathway for preventing new-onset pain. METHODS: We used d

Pathways to lung cancer diagnosis and treatment among patients in Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

Late-stage presentation remains a major challenge for cancer control in low- and middle-income countries, driven by limited cancer care infrastructure, diagnostic constraints, and the lack of organized lung cancer screening programs. Therefore, this study explored the pathways of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as patients’ experiences throughout this journey in Ethiopia. This multicenter qualitative study in three tertiary hospitals involved interviews with 33 primary lung cancer patients who had started at least one treatment and were analyzed thematically, beginning with a dedu

Perception on blackflies and community ownership of the "Slash-and-Clear" vector control intervention in onchocerciasis-endemic communities along Edo-Ondo border in Southern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Many communities along the Edo-Ondo border in southern Nigeria remain highly endemic for onchocerciasis. Despite more than two decades of mass drug administration (MDA), transmission persists, necessitating the National Onchocerciasis Elimination Committee (NOEC) to designate the zone as special intervention hotspots. Slash-and-Clear (S&C) has emerged as a promising, community-based approach that can be integrated with ongoing MDA campaigns. This study assessed community knowledge of blackfly, onchocerciasis and willingness to sustain S&C without external financial or logistical su

Fertility in the Shadow of Cancer: Experiences of Reproductive Loss Among Women with Gynecological Cancers in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Gynecological cancers remain a threat to women's health in Ghana, where the burden is shaped by late diagnosis, limited specialized care, and treatment-related infertility. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy can damage the ovaries and uterus, causing premature ovarian failure, early menopause, and loss of reproductive potential. In a pronatalist context where motherhood supports identity, marriage stability, and social standing, infertility carries a psychosocial burden. Yet, the lived experiences of women with gynecological cancer-related infertility remain poorly understood.
