Şereffeddin Sabuncuoğlu was a skilled surgeon from the early Ottoman period (15th century) in the Anatolian city of Amasya. He was a physician, surgeon, trainer, scientist, miniature artist, calligrapher, and the author of three significant books in addition to four other known manuscripts. In this study, unlike the previous historical clinical articles about him focused only on certain chapters he had written in his book 'Imperial Surgery', we have tried to focus on his whole life, including his personal experiences and things happening in his immediate environment.

In this insightful and personal biographical article, Professor Vilkki recounted his journey from surgical problem to surgical solution. This was an invited article as part of the 2025 FESSH/JHSE Special Issue on 'Technology and Innovation'. Professor Vilkki attributed his achievements to the influence of mentors, the importance of cadaveric dissections and long years of clinical experience.

Resources detailing the scope, details, and duration for teaching and learning surgical model development in research are poorly described. Situated learning and instructional scaffolding are useful skill-building tools. Herein, we discuss educational theory in the context of a training paradigm for surgical researchers, using our experience with a nonunion femoral fracture model as an example. Stages of learning include cognitive, associative, and autonomous stages. In surgical training, the cognitive stage involves the acquisition of basic knowledge, including anatomy, surgical approach, ins

BACKGROUND: Inadequate anatomy training has been cited as a major contributor to declines in surgical resident operative competence and confidence. We report the impact of a procedurally oriented general surgery cadaveric dissection course on trainee-operative confidence and competence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After obtaining institutional review board approval, postgraduate year 2 and 3 general surgery residents were prospectively enrolled into two cohorts: (1) an intervention group (n = 7) participating in an 8-wk procedurally oriented cadaver course and (2) controls (n = 7) given access to …

Myiasis is defined as the infestation of live vertebrates (humans and/or animals) with dipterous larvae. In mammals (including humans), dipterous larvae can feed on the host's living or dead tissue, liquid body substance, or ingested food and cause a broad range of infestations depending on the body location and the relationship of the larvae with the host. In this review, we deeply discuss myiasis as a worldwide infestation with different agents and with its broad scenario of clinical manifestations as well as diagnosis techniques and treatment.

To critically evaluate the literature and to design valid studies, surgeons require an understanding of basic statistics. Despite the increasing complexity of reported statistical analyses in surgical journals and the decreasing use of inappropriate statistical methods, errors such as in the comparison of multiple groups still persist. This review introduces the statistical issues relating to multiple comparisons, describes the theoretical basis behind analysis of variance (ANOVA), discusses the essential differences between ANOVA and multiple t-tests, and provides an example of the computatio

The authors described the medical achievements of Jan Antoni Mikulicz-Radecki--a famous surgeon and laryngologist of Polish origin, belonging to the Viennese surgical school of Prof. Theodor Billroth at the turn of the 20th century. His scientific and clinical activity in Vienna, Cracow, Konigsberg, and Wroclaw resulted in 232 publications and several new surgical methods. He changed the opinion on scleroma and described benign lymphoepithelial lesions. He was one of the authors of modern aseptics, antisepsis in surgery, and is regarded as a pioneer of endoscopic procedures. He was interested

Christian Wisbech (1801-1869) was medical superintendent of "Bergen civile Sygehus" during the period 1825-1848. Some of his annual reports have been published. The hospital had 56 beds. The permanent staff included one "spisemester" (caterer) and two "sygeopvartersker" (nurses). Christian Wisbech's medicine was based on strict scientific principles and pathological anatomy. A post-mortem was performed on the deceased. Other current trends in medical practice at that time were foreign to him. It is assumed that he was inspired by Giovanni Morgagni (1682-1771) and John Hunter (1728-1793). His t

The work of surgical departments involves varying proportions of investigation, diagnosis and treatment and the object of audit is to measure and monitor the outcome of this activity. It also serves as a secondary but important role in education, research and resource planning. The different methods of audit described in this symposium gave varying contributions to the definition of workload and outcome and to the education of the surgical staff. Irrespective of the audit system used, there is little doubt that weekly meetings specifically designed for the purpose are of prime importance, and

BACKGROUND: Because of lack of patient education on the importance of surgeon certification and barriers to access a plastic surgeon (PS), non-PSs are becoming more involved in providing implant-based breast reconstruction procedures. We aim to clarify differences in outcomes and resource utilization by surgical specialty for implant-based breast reconstruction.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2012 to 2014. Patients undergoing immediate implant-based reconstruction or immediate/delayed tissue expande

OBJECTIVES: We compared the long-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention with second-generation drug-eluting stents (PCI-DES) and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) with the left internal mammary artery in stable angina patients with isolated single-vessel proximal left anterior descending artery (pLAD) disease.
BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes of second-generation PCI-DES and CABG in isolated pLAD lesions have not been extensively studied.
METHODS: We included 631 PCI-DES patients and 379 CABG patients. Unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were derived for major ad

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs)-particularly GPT-4 and GPT-4o-have demonstrated high correct-answer rates in medical examinations. GPT-4o has enhanced diagnostic capabilities, advanced image processing, and updated knowledge. Japanese surgeons face critical challenges, including a declining workforce, regional health care disparities, and work-hour-related challenges. Nonetheless, although LLMs could be beneficial in surgical education, no studies have yet assessed GPT-4o's surgical knowledge or its performance in the field of surgery.
OBJECTIVE: This stud

BACKGROUND: Although using gloves in surgery dates back to the nineteenth century in modern medicine, it seems that the earliest evidence can be found in the Middle Ages.
METHODS: It is a library research-based study on the book of Ḏaḫīre-ye Kāmele, written by Ḥakim Mohammad (Ḥakīm Muhammad), a Persian surgeon in the sixteenth century.
RESULTS: Ḥakim Mohammad advises the surgeons to use a sheath made of sheep testicle skin for their fingers when examining a wound and putting ointment and bandage on it to protect oneself from diseases that are transmitted through the skin and blood, such as p
