Objectives: 10% of all fractures occur in the fingers and metacarpal region. Early mobilization with preservation of grip function is the goal of any therapy for these injuries. Osteosyntheses with plates are used in complex fractures that do not allow any other treatment. Symptomatic phalangeal rotation deformities require corrective osteotomy. Surgery at the phalangeal level is technically demanding and has a higher complication rate. We describe the surgical technique of metacarpal base osteotomy for rotation correction of the digit. This technique is simple, allows early rehabilitation, and has a lower complication rate.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda with progressive arthropathy, described by Wynne-Davies et al., is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterised by generalised platyspondyly and epiphyseal involvement, with enlargement of both ends of the short tubular bones of the hands. Clinical features include onset in childhood, a disproportionately short stature and premature osteoarthritis. We describe the clinical and radiographic findings of a young woman suffering from spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda with progressive arthropathy.

Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) is a classification system, which groups patients according to their diagnosis and resource consumption. Common hand surgical diagnoses and procedures were processed using national DRG-groupers of six European countries. Numerous epidemiological studies link bone loss with vascular calcification and cardiovascular disease. Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis share risk factors and are likely to share pathogenic mechanisms as well.
