What is the optimal medical management of infertility and minor endometriosis? Analysis and future prospects.

By asking the question 'What is the optimal medical management of infertility and minor endometriosis?', it is assumed that endometriosis has a detrimental effect on fertility. The published data suggest that oocyte dysfunction may contribute to infertility associated with endometriosis. This is expressed as a reduction in fertilization and implantation rates; implantation rates to a lesser extent, though still significant. Other evidence for oocyte dysfunction exists, not all of which is consistent. Suppression of ovulation and menstruation to treat endometriosis-associated infertility is not

Singaporean beliefs about HIV and AIDS.

As part of an in-home survey, 429 Singaporeans responded to questions concerning beliefs about AIDS as a disease and the ways in which one can contract HIV. The results indicated that, although many held realistic beliefs, identifiable biases and misconceptions were present. Virtually all respondents were aware that HIV is contracted through sexual contact as well as the sharing of needles during IV drug use. However, many respondents believed that it is either somewhat or very likely for HIV to be transmitted through casual contact, by giving blood, or from mosquitoes and other insects. Also,

Lay understanding of genetics: a test of a hypothesis.

There have been growing calls for more education in genetics for the public and in schools. However, studies of the public, school children, and those who have received genetic counselling show that understanding of scientific genetics is very limited. A hypothesis to explain this limited understanding is proposed and tested. It is argued that there is a widespread lay knowledge of inheritance which conflicts in a number of aspects with scientific explanations and which impedes the assimilation of the latter. It is suggested that this lay knowledge is derived from concepts of the social relati

Attitudes of subjects at risk and their relatives towards genetic counselling in Huntington's chorea.

Ninety-two patients suffering from Huntington's chorea (HC) and their spouses, and 91 subjects with an affected parent and their spouses, living in three counties of industrial South Wales, have been studied regarding their knowledge of their inheritance of the disorder. Particular attention was paid to its influence on their attitudes towards child-bearing, telling their children of the risks, and predictive tests. Only 12% of the patients were known to have received professional advice before completing their families, in contrast to 68% of the sample at risk. It is estimated that 82% of the

Sexuality education: a more realistic view of its effects.

Sexuality education has been proffered as a partial solution to a variety of adolescent sexual problems. Research demonstrates that programs increase knowledge, but have little direct impact on values and attitudes, actual sexual behavior, use of birth control, and teen-age pregnancy. This article compares the effects of sexuality education programs with the results of other educational programs and discusses why sex education programs may increase knowledge, but may not effectively change behavior. Finally, good reasons to offer sexuality education are discussed.

The measurement and utility of the opinion leadership concept for family planning programs.

The objectives of family planning educational programs often include information diffusion as well as attitude and behavior change within a target population. This paper suggests that working with opinion leaders might be one possible means of fulfilling these objectives. But in order to work with opinion leaders, it is necessary first to identify them. For family planning studies, the operational indicators used in past studies do not appear to be adequate. These indicators do not accurately identify persons who will take an opinion leadership behavior in the future, do not measure knowledge
