OBJECTIVE: Stellate ganglion block (SGB) blocks the sympathetic branch of the autonomous nervous system, but its specific effects on heart rate variability (HRV) remain widely unidentified in detail. Additionally, under anatomically perspective the vagus nerve is adjacent located to the stellate ganglion. Therefore, the vagus nerve may be affected by a SGB as well. This study aimed at assessing the possibility of selectively blocking efferent sympathetic fibers to the heart and upper extremity via an ultrasound-guided SGB technique.
METHODS: In a placebo-controlled, double-blind trial based o…

INTRODUCTION: Operational pilots are required to perform complex tasks under high stress and uncertainty. One of the major challenges of aviation medicine is the selection of suitable candidates to serve as pilots. The vagal nerve is a crucial moderator of stress responses, and its activity (indexed by heart rate variability, HRV) reflects psycho-physiological resilience and has been shown to predict performance in various settings. However, its predictive value in pilot training has not been examined. This study examined the relationship between HRV and success in an intensive and long pilot …

BACKGROUND: Light therapy is increasingly used to address disorders such as depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and seasonal affective disorder. Autonomic dysfunction, common in these conditions, may be modulated by light through its effects on cardiac vagal activity, indexed by vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV).
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesized evidence on the effects of ocular exposure to visible light (illuminance and color) on vmHRV in healthy and clinical populations.
METHOD: Following PRISMA guidelines, an electronic search of MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web o…

COVID-19 is associated with long-term cardiovascular complications. Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a measure of sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) control, has been shown to predict COVID-19 outcomes and correlate with disease progression but a comprehensive analysis that includes demographic influences has been lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the balance between SNS, PNS and heart rhythm regulation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and compare it with similar measurements in healthy volunteers and individuals with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), while also investi…

Background While the effects of exercise on the cardiovascular system are well documented, ultra-endurance sports involve distances beyond the scope of traditional marathons and have grown in popularity at a staggering pace in recent years. While short-term high-intensity exercise stimulates sympathetic rises in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP), the depletion of fluid and electrolyte reserves characteristic of ultra-endurance sports may contribute to decreases in overall BP after the race. If decompensation of the autonomic safety net occurs, orthostatic hypotension as a result of fluid…

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HIBI) induced by cardiac arrest (CA) seems to predominate in cortical areas and to a lesser extent in the brainstem. These regions play key roles in modulating the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), that can be assessed through analyses of heart rate variability (HRV). The objective was to evaluate the prognostic value of various HRV parameters to predict neurological outcome after CA.
METHODS: Retrospective monocentric study assessing the prognostic value of HRV markers and their association with HIBI severity. Patients admitted for CA …

The current literature on the effects of clozapine on pregnancy is limited, and no cases of pregnant Japanese women have been reported. Decreased variability in the fetal heart rate due to clozapine exposure has been reported in countries other than Japan, but its association with serum concentrations of clozapine has not been documented. In this case, a 29-year-old Japanese primipara with treatment-resistant schizophrenia taking clozapine 250 mg/day experienced pregnancy. The pregnancy progressed without complications. At 40 weeks and 2 days of gestation, the patient developed premature ruptu…
